Bone Inlay Is the Stunning New Home Decor Trend You Can't Afford to Ignore

Your home deserves an upgrade. And here's the perfect way to do it... no (or maybe some?) bones about it!

By Angela Law

You know how trends have a tendency to get recycled? Don't worry, I'm not about to tell you about another '90s rehash. The latest in home decor goes way further back than that. No... not even the '80s or '70s. We're talking ancient Egyptian times over here.

Bone inlay is an old technique in furniture decorating that was beloved by Eqyptian and Indian royalty. Its opulence in aesthetic stems from the level of involvement required for each piece. Traditionally, depressions are first carved into the furniture (tables, cabinets, chairs, mirrors, storage chests, vases, etc.) so that carefully shaped fragments of bone, along with stone and wood, can then be hand-placed into intricate patterns.

The result? Gorgeous mosaic-like pieces fit for a pharaoh.

Recently, bone inlay has been rediscovered and applied to more modern silhouettes. Whereas older pieces felt like they belonged in a museum, you can now find a fine bone inlay item that can instantly elevate a room of any style. Below are a selection of items that we think would look great in homes from mid-century to art-deco. No wonder everybody wants a piece!

According to Pinterest, "bone inlay" pictures have been saved 207 percent more this year. Could you be the next person to get in on this trend?

Pinstripe Decorative Tray

I'll start you off with this reasonably priced serving tray. Looks pretty yet simple at first glance. But when you see the detail on this thing? You'll fall in love like we did.

Bar Harbor Bone Inlay Mirror

If you don't have a beach house, you should buy a beach house so you can put this mirror in it.

Barnard Bone Inlay Accent Stool

Made of sturdy resin, this can be used as either table or stool.

Optical Inlay Desk

Literally if this was the only piece of furniture you had, guests would still say you had a well-appointed home. It works as a desk or entryway table.

Bone Inlay Box

Here's a piece to prove that not all bone inlay comes in the form of bold patterns. Sometimes, the texture that the technique creates speaks for itself.

Loft Geometric Inlay Picture Frame

Then again, those bold patterns are pretty darn cool. Wayfair swears this is real, hand-crafted bone. I don't know why this frame is so affordable but I won't ask too many questions.

Ivy Bronx Bellevue Bone Inlay End Table

I was shocked and delighted to find this stunning side table at Walmart of all places! Well done, Walmart.

Waterfall Inlay Console Table

This table was made using traditional materials but fortified using modern smarts — it has a clear wax seal for easy cleaning. It's not a loud piece, but the details will melt your heart.

Hexagonal Inlay Coffee Table

Just thought I'd throw this in here in case you wanted the whole set. Can you tell how much I want this set for myself yet?

Gold Toned Drawer Knobs With Blue and White Bone Inlay

Don't forget the accessories! If you're not quite ready for the splurge, start with something small, like this drawer pull. I bet you'll come back for more though!
