Even for Kathy Griffin, sometimes a good cause trumps all.

Jul 13, 20100

When you’re producing a show for a hilarious redhead who loves to push the boundaries, there are few challenges more trying than attempting to get her meetings with actual members of Congress. For one thing, they tend to be rather busy making laws or filibustering so that no laws get made, so their schedules are not always free. Second, they have this pesky habit of trying to keep their reputations clean, so on-camera interviews with comedians are not high on the agenda. But Kathy was determined, so with her can-do spirit – we did.

First off, I’ve got to give props to the team at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) who worked tirelessly to make those meetings happen. When Kathy sprang it on them that she was going to take up the cause of repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell by coming to Washington, they were thrilled…in much the same way that one is thrilled when your best friend announces that he’s coming for a visit and staying with you for a whole month – you’re excited, happy... and filled with dread. But the HRC loved Kathy, and the cause is top on their agenda, so they jumped in with full force. Still, I couldn’t help but notice the slightest hint of regret on their faces when Kathy’s jokes started bombing with Barney Frank.

Kathy knew that Barney Frank was gay, and I think she assumed that meant he had a sense of humor, or more accurately, her sense of humor. It took a few jokes not landing to realize that Congressman Frank was short on patience and time, so she got to the point. But the 45 seconds it took for him to warm up to Kathy seemed like an eternity. Once he realized that she knew her stuff and that she was serious about the cause, he was in.

Jared Polis was on the opposite end of the spectrum. The junior Congressman is both a fan of Kathy’s and a fan of pop culture. He is very comfortable being an out gay man in Congress, impressively so, and his staff could have doubled for the staff at the Abbey. We edited Kathy’s visit with him for comedy, but his knowledge on the details of the repeal effort was impressive.

Our last stop was Majority Whip James Clyburn. He is a known civil rights advocate who dates back to the era of Dr. King. In his grand, historic office within the Capitol Building, we quietly waited for him to come up from the floor of Congress. There was an indicator light on the wall that dated from the invention of electricity that showed when the vote was in progress. After Congress was finished voting on National Labradoodle day or whatever, he arrived. As he took his seat, it was clear that he was not going to be jostled by a few jokes -- even ones about his whip or Kathy’s unrequited love for him. He was cordial and encouraging, but noncommittal on the timing of the repeal, much to Kathy’s frustration. Still, his sexy Barry White voice did leave an impression on her.

As we walked back through the halls of Congress, seeing the various names on the office doors, I could see Kathy’s mind racing. “What if I just pop in on…?” Luckily, helping the DADT cause trumped the urge to create a great, comedic PR stunt, and we all managed to make it back to out and back to the hotel without a scene. (We stayed at The Mayflower, by the way – the hotel made famous by New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and his paid lady friend.)

Lighten up, Scott! For those of you who question whether she would make similar comments about Obama's daughters, when they are adults I have no doubt that she will. When the time comes hopefully our president will have more of a sense of humor about it than the senator did. Loved it - even the disclaimer was hysterical. No press is bad press, Kathy. Laugh all the way to the bank...

This is SO out of control. It's a joke people!!! Scott Brown is just ashamed that he made a mistake when he, well-meaningly, tried to p*mp his daughters out on national tv and now has to pay for the consequences of being so STUPID. Everyone knows they are not prostitutes, that's what makes it SO hilarious. And these faux comparisions to Obama's daughters are as fake as the conservatives on here. Brown's daughters are adults and they participated in their father's campaign so they are now in the game. You don't get to pick and choose when you're in the spotlight once you make that choice. Grow up people!!! Also what better target than Scott Brown and his oh so perfect family, the bigot from MA who is trying to hold up the repeal of DADT. How dare he think he's better than those gay men and women who served in the military and who's lives were RUINED when discharged from a life of service. It's called KARMA!!

Come on people, the senator made the statement himself, Kathy was just restating what came out of the senator's mouth. Read the transcript if you can't hear what the politicians are actually saying. If your going to point fingers and cast stones make sure you aim towards the right taget or at least in the right direction! "Back Blast Area All Clear!! Fire!!!!"

C'mon Everyone!!
C'mon Everyone!!

I love Kathy and even though I am not gay, I am so proud that she is doing everything she can to support them and taking real action, most celebrities would not follow thru like she does. OK she said an off-handed joke about some senators daughters, I know children should not be the butt of a joke, but the people that take offense to obvious jokes shouldn't be watching Kathy's show she is a comedian she even rips on her 90 year old mother, everyone knows it is just for a laugh!! That is what we need more people who are looking to make us laugh and not be sooooooo sensitive & uptight!!

If you dont like her show, please turn the channel!!

Is everyone forgetting the Scott Brown was the one that put his arms around his 21 year old daughter and announced "She is available". I believe in free speech and repel of dadt. I feel the fact we have that prejudice policy is a lot more offensive than anything Kathy says. You go get em Kathy. Someone needs to pull their heads out of their asses. Fan for life!!

I always was a faithful viewer but last year the show was always about gay people or gay issues, not Kathy and the funny things she does. I have nothing against gay people but it was getting old. Now with what she said about Sen. Browns daughters, unfunny and uncalled for. Would she say that about Obamas daughters? I doubt it.

You go Cathy! People need to get a sense of humor and a life! Don't ever change and don't ever back down to a Repub feigning outrage for their own benefit. The joke's on them because you got the reaction and the publicity...they fall for it ever time. Dopes, all of 'em. Love you, you equal opportunity offender!!!! xoxo

Well Kathy, once again you have moved me to tears! Thank you for your tireless work on behalf of the GLBT community. Although I am a happily married hetero breeder, my brother is gay. I believe GLBT civil rights issues are too important to be ignored and I love that you refuse to ignor them! I just want to share with you one simple way I have found to try to make a difference. I teach middle school, and one of my earliest experiences in the clasroom (8 years ago) prompted my own form of activism. After all, middle school students will be voting adults one day! I open my room every year with a list of rules and the first rule on my list is that students are never, ever to refer to anything negative as "gay"...I give them all a little come-to-jesus sermon about why this perpetuates negative ideas about gays and that nothing they do or say will make me more upset than to hear them call something or someone gay when their real intent is to be demeaning. Soon enough, students begin policing one another in the halls and in other classrooms, and for the most part their vernacular changes! Thanks again, Kathy...see you in Battlecreek, MI!

Good for Kathy for going to take a stand on behalf of all of the brave men and women who go unheard in America. That being said, I believe the majority of you on this comment thread need to remove the stick from your rear ends. Its called a joke. It is what she does, she tells jokes for a living. She offends everyone, no holds barred. Please get over it and quit taking everything she says so seriously. There are much more serious things in the world to worry about than the smack that comes out of Kathy Griffin's mouth. Kathy, thanks for the awareness you spread and come on America, do your part, contact your Senator and let's repeal DADT! It's time for a change now!

Your recent attack on Senator Brown's daughters was uncalled for and, for that matter, not even remotely funny. Since when is attacking someones children appropriate on national TV? I used to be a big fan, but since your show has simply become a front for the DNC to attack conservative policies, instead of actual comedy, you lost me. I am a conservative and have enjoyed humor from both sides, but did you ever realize that the Democrats are in charge? If you don't like the way things are, why don't you attack them?

Calling a hooker a hooker is not funny. It is because Sen. Browns daughters are the antithesis of prostetutes is what makes the joke hilarious. If you didn't catch the joke Scott, just change the channel or go back to work.

Love to watch Bravo but K.G. turns me off to the extent I am reluctant to continue to watch any program. She is already a set- back for women but her political "JOKES" are unbearable. Hope Bravo is not indirectly giving away their political perspective as well. Debating whether to continue to tune in to Bravo-One rotten apple spoils the sauce.

I've always loved Kathy's over-the-top crazy humor, but the comment about the Senator's daughters was not comedy and she should apologize. Kathy, you've lost me as a viewer. Why not forget the politics and go back to just being funny!

You should be ashamed at yourself for what you said about Senator Brown's daughters. And Bravo producers should be ashamed also. You all share blame.

I dare you to say that about Obama's daughters. Got the guts? Didn't think so.

I never take the time to write on any of blogs, etc; but I really feel the need to tell Kathy that she has lost one of her biggest fans. I was a religious D-List viewer up until last season. Prior to last season, I would even watch the show multiple times. I got all of my family members and friends to tune in as well. I loved Kathy's parents and what appeared to be Kathy in her day-to-day life trying to stay on top. Even when my mom would comment on the vulgarity, I would just tell my mom that Kathy was doing it for effect, etc. The show really went on the decline last year with a completely scripted season. I understand that Bravo is considered to be the 'gay network' and that's perfectly fine.. (I love most of the Bravo shows, esp. all of the Housewives, Top Chef, 9 by Design and more..); but last season of the D-List was just over the top. Every show last season was just filled with nonstop gay references and themes, vulgar language and zero comedy.. It was just too much - no longer entertaining whatsoever... This season I vowed not to even tune in, but I saw a clip of the D-List show tonight on the local Boston news station that was unbelievable. It was a clip of Kathy announcing that the MA Senator Scott Brown's daughters are prostitutes. What is funny about that comment? Absolutely NOTHING! It's disgusting and uncalled for... It just further validates my feelings about the D-List show - TOTAL CRAP!!! Kathy has become totally desperate and has probably lost most of her fanbase that she had built up over the first few seasons. Why does Bravo allow this??

Kathy, Would you like it if Michelle O daughters were called the same thing you called Scott Brown daughters. The rules are all the children of politician are out of bounds lest you find out there will be no boundaries at all. One less tight ass watchin' your show won't make or break it.

I love your show and often laugh out loud even if I'm watching by myself. I understand your humor and love your intelligence and quick wit, but I wish you'd see conservatives in a more "human" light. We are not all ogres, we don't eat children, and some of us, like me--a conservative blogger and columnist--have gay people in our lives whom we love, and we support gay marriage. I believe the best thing the Republican party could do for itself is to get out of the gay marriage debate completely. It's none of their business. If they were to do that, there would be a lot of people who would then listen to the conservative values of small government, lower taxes, etc., and decide they like what they're hearing. But right now any of our core beliefs are drowned out by the "anti-gay" religious contingent. There are no non-religious arguments against gay marriage that stick, and I don't believe we should base social policy on religion, because we have so many different religious beliefs that we cannot represent only one, and we are supposed to have separation of church and state. Religion should be out of politics. And if you take religion out of politics, then gay marriage and gay rights aren't even issues. It's not the same as abortion, because there are many excellent secular, scientifically based arguments against abortion. Again, religion should have nothing to do with that either. So please, Kathy, don't paint all conservatives with the same brush. And don't always fall for the leftist rhetoric that characterizes conservative public figures as stupid, evil (e.g. Sarah Palin), before you really take a look at what they're saying. You're a really smart woman. Think for yourself, and think about what each of these conservatives is saying and make your own judgments. Anyway, I think you're hilarious, and I'll keep watching the show, even though you insult people like me far too frequently for my comfort. But I enjoy the laughs more, and I love your Mom.

This week's episode on DADT was very moving. I had tears in my eyes as I listened to the stories of our gay soldiers. Thank you for educating us all on this issue, and other gay rights issues. It's about time that we, as a country, say no to hatred, fear, and discrimination. Great job!

LOVE your shows, Kathy, AND your efforts to right some of those wrongs out there! Sadly, you're so correct when you opine that Washington D.C. doesn't get your type of humor!

Question: WHAT will you do now that Levi is ENGAGED to young Ms. Palin?? I was heartsick to see his fidelity to you change over to the mother of his child. I DID LIKE that they chose to tell their parents of the new engagement via US Weekly. Cool (or cold) depending I guess on your point of view. I'm a viewer forever.

Dear Kathy, thanks for getting Levi back with Bristol. They have that adorable baby, so it was the right thing to do. I am sure after the wild fling you two had Levi knew that a gal like you could not belong to one man. He set you free baby to move on to the next victim, I mean guy. Maybe now that you are into politics you could be the next Mrs Al Gore? What about a hunk like Kevin Miller on KIDO in Idaho? He is so conservative, and sweet I know that he would be blushing the entire date. lol

This show is getting way too serious for what it is intended for....entertainment! Kathy is fun to watch, but I hate this season. She or producers are using this forum for political agendas and I'm annoyed. I want to sit for an hour and laugh. It is reflecting on Kathy like every other entertainer who cannot shut up for a minute about their political beliefs. I will turn on her just like every other actor who thinks we care what they think about the world. Keep it light or I'm tuning out!

I love Kathy, love her show. Her potty mouth is sometimes way over the top, but her intelligence always makes up for it. My only issue with the show is that I agree with RepublicanLori in that she needs to back off dogging the conservative party so much. By the way, I thought her mission to make Sarah Palin and her family look stupid completely backfired on her. And Levi Johnston, oh God, the little frog I see in my dog's water bowl as I type this has more personality, and is cuter. I loved this last episode re DADT. Her moments with the soldiers brought home the point that DADT needs to be repealed more than anything else could. Those clips need to be shown outside of Kathy's show, everyone needs to see them. If Kathy ever wants to hang up the comedy and have a serious show that deals with current events, she would be fabulous. I don't always agree with her and often am upset by her one-sided view of liberals good/conservatives evil, but I would still watch anything she is on.

Loved it! And I can not disagree more with Republican Lori's post. Keep up the good work of brining attention to serious causes with your brand of humor.

Question for Lori: Would it have been more enjoyable for you had she ripped on a Democrat or someone that YOU disagree with? The point is Kathy is representing her own beliefs, and they happen to resonate with a LARGE number of her fans. It is okay to disagree, but you can't change KATHY when she is being herself. Kind of makes me wonder how long you have been a fan because she has always been this outspoken.

Yes the Congressmen are so busy (yeah right) and important. BUT, let's not forget that they are public servants and are in Washington because they were elected by us. They are supposed to be available to hear the publics' opinion because they are REPRESENTING us. Sometimes i think we forget that. Anywho, last night show was very good and I enjoyed it alot. Love Kathy, think she is absolutley hysterical, and watch every week but do have one complaint. There have been entirely too many political issues infused into the show lately. Last week was the Alaska visit and dogging of Sarah Palin, this week we get the DC trip with focus on DADT and dogging of John Mcain and others, and Bill O'Reily has been thrown in both weeks. Last year we only had the one Prop 8 focused show that I recall. If I wanted to hear liberal politics I'd just tune into MSNBC. I watch Kathy for laughs but tend to agree with Maggie's political opinions so have been pretty disappointed. I hope this is not the direction the show is taking or I'm afraid you will end up with at least one less viewer.:(
