CHOICES. Each week the designers are presented with a challenge specifically incorporating an inspirational element. How priceless was the look on their faces when the element(s) stood naked in front of them? Though, they all managed to channel their inner professional and immediately got to work.
While watching each of them sketch and vibe with the models I saw true designers in motion..... and potential great designs. Some actually came to fruition. Others got lost. At this point in the competition the essence/purpose of Launch My Line is evident in how we judge each garment. The competition will be won by the designer/expert who has successfully built a line that tells a story, has a clear vision. The voice is in the choice! The choice of a name, target customer, fabric, trim and how they integrate and execute the weekly challenge into their brand. A designer's best opportunity to speak to their customer is in the product. Each week we "listen" and make our decisions by looking at the whole picture.
Eric's record was "skipping" and if Louanna had dressed one of her clients in this day outfit for a night on the town they may have been less than pleased. As I mentioned in our deliberation it was a lack of vision, not talent that seemed to confuse certain designers. Well.... there's always next time so let's look forward!
I just started watching the show, I am catching the reruns and I love it. What I also love about watching reality tv competition, is that it sparks reaction. I can't help but have to say sometimes I am dissapointed in the judge's decisions. For example, in an earlier episode, Kevin Black was voted off. I actually really liked that piece, the pantsuit. I would wear it. It was not bad enough to be voted off. Meanwhile, that piece Patrick designed that week was unacceptable. I am sure, his past work must have kept him around, but just the fact that none of the judges gave him a hard time about the piece baffled me! It was incomplete! And then this week, it broke my heart to see Vanessa go. I am am probably one of the view to admit I loved her work. Unfortunately the judges did not. But Eric's piece, that totally resembled ALL of his other pieces, did not in my opionion give him a better line than Vanessa's. At this point, his pieces are marketable, but they lack ceeativity. I think creativity as much as marketability should be recognized here. I could go to the store and buy and/or make clothes that look like Eric's line now!! One more thing...there are really talented designers on there. Marilyn is an unexpected genius. Her clothes are gorgeous. I look forward to this week!!
I want to know why Dean and Dan Caten don't have a blog so their fan pack can keep up with them? If they don't like to write can they at least do a weekly video blog about the show and their DSquared clothing line?
