How to Fake Lush, Thick Eyebrows (No Experience Necessary)

Here's how to get fuller (natural-ish) brows without looking like a clown.

By Angela Law

I grew up during a time when skinny eyebrows were cool. The perfect eyebrows looked like they were drawn on with a fine-point pen — think Courtney Love, Drew Barrymore, or anybody on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I went to get my eyebrows threaded even though I only had 5 hairs per side! Barely-there brows were the look for most of my life and thus, I never really noticed how lacking I was in the eyebrow department until Cara Delevigne came along.

Ever since, I have been obsessed with trying to figure out how to put eyebrows to my face. Thick brows were all I could think about. And, I was literally starting from scratch — in both the hair and makeup departments — so there was a lot of work to do. I have pretty much tried every powder, gel, brush, and pencil on the market. At one point, completely frustrated, I even convinced myself that a liquid eyeliner was the way to go. I was regressing. Only this time, I crossed the fine line, and gave myself brows that looked like they were drawn on with a flat-tip marker. (Friends reading this: Please delete any pictures you may have of me from this era.)

But, after many trials and errors, I think I have finally figured out a look that feels natural for me but not-outdated. It helps that now (finally) there are a plethora of new tools out there to help you achieve any look you want. According to the NPD Group, eyebrow makeup increased 7 percent in sales since 2017 —and that is as part of a $8.1 billion industry. That's a lot of product! So, of all those makeup companies cashing in, which are the best? Let's explore!

Maybelline TattooStudio Brow Tint Pen

We'll start with a product you can try without shelling out too much money. The multi-pronged tip allows for small, thin, "hair-like" marks that look more natural than strokes from a typical brush. You can just keep piling it on until you get your desired density! The tint part gives you smudge-free color for 24 hours.

Laura Mercier Brow Dimension

Does this wand look familiar? Just like a mascara brush, it lengthens and thickens each hair while providing maximum blending and shaping capability. The 12-hour, long-lasting gel conditions and leaves a sheen that even healthy eyebrows dream of.

Eyeko Brow Gel

A mixture of keratin, gingko biloba, and vitamins in this gel helps replenish brows while it tames them.

Mister Brow Filler Tinted Waterproof Brow Filler

This gel dries like a powder, leaving a soft, natural finish. This would have changed everything during my marker-eyebrow phase.

Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Brow-Volumizing Tinted Fiber Gel

Microfibers in this gel cling on to your hairs allowing you to build serious volume. It's pretty magical! Note: This gel is clear. So, while it's perfect for a natural look, if your eyebrows are a little sparse, like mine, you might benefit from using a colored pencil as well.

MAC Brow Set

For a more natural look, sometimes all your eyebrows need is a little shaping and glossing. This awesome product also comes in several tints if you need a little more filler action. Bonus: You can also use this product on lashes!

Kevyn Aucoin -- The Precision Brow Pencil

This pencil is perfect for those who like the idea of the 3-prong tip but would prefer a little more control and precision. This one is great for really sparse eyebrows.

Anastasia Brow Definer

Anastasia is undeniably the eyebrow queen. She is about to be a bonafied billionare and it's all thanks to the hairs on our browy, brow, brows. It's well deserved. All her products pretty much rock. This may look like a regular eyebrow pencil but its slanted tip actually makes it the perfect all in one — you can outline and fill your brows with absolute ease.

RevitaBrow Advanced Eyebrow Conditioner

Okay. So makeup aside, you would like some IRL thick eyebrows? It might be time to look into a serum. RevitaBrow helps keep your brows super saturated, protecting them from brittle breakage.

Elizabeth Arden Prevage Clinical Lash Brow Enhancing Serum for Women

This is basically Rogaine for your eyebrows. You put it on the spots that need the most help and after a while, voila! Visibly thicker brows.

Lashfood Browfood Brow Transformation System

Looking for a total do-over and into DIY projects? This is the kit for you! It promises results in as little as 4 weeks. Once they've grown in nice and full, you can use the brow arch guides to reshape your entire face!
