Team Supermodel

Outside the Box

Bravotv.com's Editor explains why she likes this season so much better than the last.

March 4, 2009

Hi, Supermodel fans! Since not all of you will have read my Team Top Chef blog, let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Monica Reyhani and I'm Editor at Bravotv.com, and I'll be sharing my thoughts on every episode of Season 2 of Make Me A Supermodel. I actually haven't had the pleasure of meeting these fine models yet, so my perception of them is based purely on watching the show, just like you guys. OK -- that's a lie. I met Colin, and he was instantly my favorite. More on that later.

I'm totally neglecting my final Team Top Chef duties right now, but I wanted to see what you guys thought of the season premiere of Season 2. Honestly, I have to admit I wasn't the biggest fan of Season 1, and since my nickname around the office is "superfan" that's saying a lot. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't find myself cheering for any of hte models — not even Ben or Ronnie (who's super-nice in real life.) But this season, I'm all over it. I got the first two episodes awhile back, and I found myself kinda hooked. So I really hope you guys notice the improvements and enjoy this season as much as I do so far.

OK — first, if you missed the casting special we aired which went more in-depth into who these models are, I'm preeetty sure you can still download it for free on iTunes. But I'll have to check.

Anyway, let's dive right into the first episode: Before the models even get to check out their amazing apartment, they are taken to their first photo shoot, where they meet Tyson. I gotta say, even Tyson is looking better this season! Tyson is officially the boys' mentor this season — he basically was last season too, but now, well, it's official. The girls will be mentored by model Nicole Trunfio who makes a dramatic entrance from inside the hanging glass cube. The models have to pair up and create intimate moments inside the box while wearing sleepwear. Most of the pairs didn't do that well, either having zero chemistry or getting too racey (I'm talking to you Jonathan and Laury.) Um, did she lick his face?! I'm sure his wife loved that. And I guess Salome and Gabriel had chemistry because he got wood. I asked Tyson whether that ever happened to him on a shoot (I've always wanted to ask him that. I kid, I kid), and I was actually shocked that he said it hadn't, and siad it's very unprofessional. I dont know — I think sometimes it's hard to control those things, but hopefully that's the last we'll hear of that problem becuase i was semi-grossed out and kind of mortified for Gabriel.

I'm not from the USA, but I still like to follow the shows on Bravo. I think this season is better, although the casting judges were a lot tougher last year. I like it better already tapped that way no minutes of the show are wasted on anouncing who is getting kicked off.

I have to admit I was addictit to Last years show, thi year not so much. I liked the fact that the show was happening in real time, I liked voting every week. This year thos things have been taken away and I think the show is suffering for it. Please change it back for next season.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Please, Is there a TASTEFUL version of Kate Moss.

Thanks for the laugh!

The show has already been filmed--Fashion Week is in February. The producers were probably scared America wouldn't pick the "right" person. It's too bad, because Ben, who is actually working as a model, wouldn't have been around long enough to get the experience he needed if it had been left up to the judges last year.

Loved last year. Was totally hooked. The contestants were hot and interesting. THIS year it looks like you opened a door and let the first sixteen people in. One guy and maybe two women look even remotely like models. I will give it another couple of episodes because of, I think his name is Ken, the one guy who looks like a model. Otherwise, what were you THINKING? It's not "take ordinary-looking people and make them look better via make up and lighting" it's "take extraordinary-looking people and find, among them, a SUPERmodel. A memorable STAR." Whoever cast the show this year really blew it. Not only are they people you'd never look at twice, they seem really boring, too. Shame. Loved it last year.

Okay, I watched last season and wasn't very thrilled with it. But, this season, I'm already hooked. I love what seems to be a new format. It seems better to me. I don't want to vote, I want the professionals to do it. I love it!!!

I am disappointed that the show appars already taped and America is not voting. I felt much more invested in the show when I had a say who could stay on. Also I got a better sense of their development knowing it was being played out pretty much in realtime. I doubt I will rush to see the show every wednesday night

I don't know what show you're watching but with the exceptions of Sandhurst & Jonathan, Supermodel season 1's male contingent blows this season's guys totally away. They're all built like scrawny middle school boys. The girls of both seasons are fairly evenly matched. And just like Tim Gunn's show, the female host disappears and nothing is said about their departures, i.e., Veronica Webb & Nikki Taylor...like the viewer doesn't notice?!?!?

Changing a show format isn't always a good thing. I agree with a previous poster about feeling invested and therefore developing a loyal viewership with direct audience participation. I'm sure this season's format change is a HUGE relief for the editors & post production staff but I wonder if BRAVO will see a reduction in ratings due to this decision.

Tyson doesn't appear very comfortable in the driver's seat this season but at least we won't be watching him nap on the judges' panel. Corey's absence from the panel is unfortunate. He always had insightful commentary for the contestants; will miss that. He's now more like Todd Oldham on Top Design. (BTW, didn't like what was done to Top Design either.) Don't think I'll be deliberately tuning in to Supermodel this season. Seems Bravo has less & less for me to watch. :(

Okay so I wasnt really going to give this a chance this season because of the changes but I liked it. Please be careful not to make it Janice Dickenson cheesy with the in house fighting etc... That was not the focus of last years show and its what set it apart from all the other "Real World" type shows. A bit dissapointed Corey is not on the judging panel. It just doesnt make sense to me that the agency giving the contract would not have some say in who wins - especially now that we dont get to vote. I must admit that part made it interactive for us -the audience. It made you wanna watch it when it was on but now I feel like I can put it on DVR and watch it later. Where do I find Corey's blog????? He's our favorite Teletubby - that was hysterical. I felt bad last year when he said he stopped reading the blogs because people said he was overweight. Bravo to him (pun intended) for squashing that thing right then and there. Well I will give it another few weeks.

Hey Monica,
Thanks for your post. I always like your Top Chef posts. So it seems that this season the judges are kicking people off instead of letting America vote. Does that mean the thing was already filmed and isn't filming now? What made the producers change their mind about the show format? I think it's better this way but I'm surprised.
