Nicole Trunfio speaks openly about the models' performances in the photo shoot and on the catwalk.
Let's go through everyone. How did Branden do this week?
Branden is really a people person. He's vulnerable and that's a really good quality to have as a model. He's up for anything and he's so enthusiastic. He's good at what he's doing right now. When he went to Montreal they liked him, when he shot with the photographer she really liked him. People are on his side.
Shawn said he wasted his invite to fashion week on Colin.
Shawn did not know what he was talking about. He has a deluded opinion. Colin is beautiful. When I watched him there he looked like he was meant to be there. Colin has the attributes that it takes to be a model, but his personality is a little off which people might use against him. I love his vulnerability. He definitely has potential. He's extremely handsome.
Jonathan did well this week.
I feel like he had been waiting for that. He needs to stop playing it safe though, it gets boring. He could have let more out with the mirror shoot. He had a lot more in there. He was conscious of the people around him and the cameras. Modeling is like acting, you have to forget about all the people that are watching. You have to do what you have to do. If that means showing a deep emotion, you have to follow through with that.
How about Kerryn?
She needs confidence. I feel like she puts confidence in her little relationship with Colin because she's really great when it's not about her. When she's looking at herself she isn't confident and she should be because she's gorgeous. It's nice not to be self-obsessed, but when you're a model you have to understand who you are and use that to your advantage. She is sexy and she has a cool personality and I feel like if she had that confidence she has with other people then she will definitely do better.
What about how aggressive she is with Colin?
I would never be able to do what she is doing. They have this awkward little relationship that is really cute to watch and I wish she would have that with herself.
What about Laury?
She has a great body. Her face is weighing her down because there's a lot of tension there. I think she knows that so she doesn't try and put her face more in the picture. She uses her body a lot. Modeling means the whole package so she needs to concentrate on her face a little more. I would like to see a close-up of her face.
What about Mountaha?
Mountaha did great on the go see. Honestly, it was nice to see another side of her. She is really hard working with every situation she's in. She's very driven and curious and she's willing to learn and listen. She doesn't have all the classic attributes of a model but she's in that stage where she's learning a lot.
Do you think she showed more versatility?
The rocker thing is part of her style, but when they told her to be more feminine she dropped that which was is a good quality to have as a model.
What about Salome?
She did an amazing job on the shoot. She was crying, she took on the character, she looked like Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl or something. She had a lot of emotion to share. Besides the excuse part of it, she's got this beautiful quality about her. On the catwalk she doesn't mind weird, but it wasn't about being weird, it was about being a beautiful freak. I feel like she just doesn't listen, she has selective hearing and this own idea of what she should be doing which doesn't work.
Are you seeing changes in the models' body at all? Are they working on the problem areas?
It takes time. Salome is toning up a little bit, I can see that.
What about Sandhurst?
He has such a gorgeous personality. He blows me away. His performance on the runway was actually insane. It was incredible. He pulled that off. He's lucky he has this dancer background, escpecially for performance art, because designers like Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier like that. He's very versatile in that sense, but it's a performance sense. I saw versatility in him this week. When he did that photo he couldn't even look at himself in the mirror though, but the runway was a completely different thing.
What about Gabe?
He's holding back in a big way. He's getting boring. Is that really everything you've got, Gabe?
What about Jordan?
She didn't show any emotion in the photo shoot this week which was disappointing. She got beginners luck and she thought she was great. She's a little too sure of herself. I could feel like she was really self-conscious, she was just blah. She's so skinny, but her hips are big so she walks a little strange on the runway.
What about Shawn?
It's just not meant for him. He did some good work, but he had a lot of odds against him.
What about CJ?
She's opening up. She's starting to, but she's not ready. You can't discover yourself when you're just about to go on the runway for Versace or do a campaign for Gucci. You have to already be open. You have to know who you are and what you want. She just needs to open up.
What about Amanda? She was very emotional, and Maggie Rizer kind of called her out on the catwalk.
Amanda had a challenge this week. The photographer wanted her to be happy because she comes off as a happy person. She didn't question that. I would have said, "let me do what I want right now." She took that challenge and she was polite, gracious, and she's a very hard worker. If you want to be a model you have to be subtly sexy though, you can't be too sexy, and the thing about Amanda is she's using her mouth and doing this campy look. It's the same with CJ. I know Amanda had a lot of emotion this week and she lost it.
Maggie thought it might be intentional.
I didn't think so. I thought that was a harsh call. I had seen her the whole week. It's totally OK for Maggie to say what she said though. If you're at a casting and you do a bad job there's no second chances. If come up to Anna Wintour and you start crying they're going to say what Maggie said. They're not going to know you. I can stand up for Amanda because I'm her mentor and I'm with her all the time. The judges are the people who are going to keep you there or make you go home.
Any other comments?
I just wanted to say that everyone who went to Montreal looked amazing on the runway. They're some of the hardest workers of the bunch. On the runway this week, most ofthe models just put an emphasis on their worst qualities. I said beautiful freaks and they all think they're beautiful so they all just focused on their worst qualities. It was creative and good, but not in the right way.
