Outside the Box

Bravotv.com's Editor explains why she likes this season so much better than the last.

Hi, Supermodel fans! Since not all of you will have read my Team Top Chef blog, let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Monica Reyhani and I'm Editor at Bravotv.com, and I'll be sharing my thoughts on every episode of Season 2 of Make Me A Supermodel. I actually haven't had the pleasure of meeting these fine models yet, so my perception of them is based purely on watching the show, just like you guys. OK -- that's a lie. I met Colin, and he was instantly my favorite. More on that later.

I'm totally neglecting my final Team Top Chef duties right now, but I wanted to see what you guys thought of the season premiere of Season 2. Honestly, I have to admit I wasn't the biggest fan of Season 1, and since my nickname around the office is "superfan" that's saying a lot. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't find myself cheering for any of hte models — not even Ben or Ronnie (who's super-nice in real life.) But this season, I'm all over it. I got the first two episodes awhile back, and I found myself kinda hooked. So I really hope you guys notice the improvements and enjoy this season as much as I do so far.

OK — first, if you missed the casting special we aired which went more in-depth into who these models are, I'm preeetty sure you can still download it for free on iTunes. But I'll have to check.

Anyway, let's dive right into the first episode: Before the models even get to check out their amazing apartment, they are taken to their first photo shoot, where they meet Tyson. I gotta say, even Tyson is looking better this season! Tyson is officially the boys' mentor this season — he basically was last season too, but now, well, it's official. The girls will be mentored by model Nicole Trunfio who makes a dramatic entrance from inside the hanging glass cube. The models have to pair up and create intimate moments inside the box while wearing sleepwear. Most of the pairs didn't do that well, either having zero chemistry or getting too racey (I'm talking to you Jonathan and Laury.) Um, did she lick his face?! I'm sure his wife loved that. And I guess Salome and Gabriel had chemistry because he got wood. I asked Tyson whether that ever happened to him on a shoot (I've always wanted to ask him that. I kid, I kid), and I was actually shocked that he said it hadn't, and siad it's very unprofessional. I dont know — I think sometimes it's hard to control those things, but hopefully that's the last we'll hear of that problem becuase i was semi-grossed out and kind of mortified for Gabriel. I have to say my favorites in this shoot were probably Salome and Sandhurst. I'll say right now that I'm choosing Sandhurst to win the whole thing, and if he doesn't, he certainly has a long modeling career ahead of him. The boy is GORGEOUS. My other favorite, as I mentioned before is Colin. If youve read any of my other blogs, you know I always fall for the chic geek, and Colin is adorable. We'll put the virgin thing aside for a sec, but his bone structure is ridiculous. I also love him because he told me he listens to indie music and he watches Gossip Girl! (Check out the "XOXO" sign-off at the end of all of his diary entries.) Anyway, I'm sure yu'll notice a severe bias towards them in every entry I write.

Salome won the shoot in the end and had the opportunity to go on a go-see to Catherine Malandrino's studio, whose clothes I love and can't fit into. She got to take one girl, and she brought CJ. She made a comment about how she brought her because she wasn't competition, and everyone seemed to think that was rude, but if you read all of the models' diaries, you'l'l see that they actually all agreed. And don't feel too bad for Ms. CJ. Watch next week's episode and you'll see why. Neither of them does particularly well with the opportunity, and although Tyson though CJ looked better in Malandrino's clothes, I have to respectfully disagree. I thought Salome looked more runway. She justt couldn't walk the walk yet.

After the girls get back, Cory makes a surprise visit so he can check out the models' bodies, and, um, so we can check out the models' bodies. Not sure if you caught the casting special, but they literally circled the fat on the models. I felt like i was watching Lifetime's Dying to Belong (best made-for-TV movie ever!) Some of the guys have a lot of lifting to do, and some of the girls need a little less booty, but overall, everyone seemed like they'd be in good shape soon.

The clothing on the catwalk was divine, and some of you may recognize some of the looks (especially the beautiful dresses worn by Amanda, Salome, and Karen) as original Christian V. Siriano. It was odd seeing them come down another runway as I had the pleasure of attending the show they were designed for, but every time I see them, I'm floored at how well they are made. Again, I was shocked at how natural Sandhurst looked. I honestly think he could walk in a show right now. No one else really impressed me, but I was sad for Colin. He'll get it. I have to believe. I also have to believe they'll stop styling his hair so poorly. In the end Ken goes home. Eh. I'm not invested enough int he models yet to care, but I have to say he's not my look. Like the judges said, he's kind of the average sporty guy, which works for certain types of ads, but isn't very versatile.

Overall I think Sandhurst could take it all — I'm sure Salome and JOrdan's attitudes will get in their wayse. But you know, that Kerryn seems like a dark horse, and she seems to have good taste in men, so I'm down with her too.

I AM a Supermodel

Branden talks about his win, what he'll do with the money, and if he plans on asking Nicole out.

Bravotv.com: At the beginning of the season, did you think you would win? Or who did you think would after seeing the other models?
Well, I’ve got to admit, at the beginning of the season, I was very intimidated by all the models, definitely I thought I wasn’t going to be underestimating myself. And really who I thought was going to win was either Sandhurst or Jonathan. That’s who I thought was going to win. So when I got down to them at the end, when I was with them, I was just amazed by myself. I thought “Holy crap! I really made it this far.” I had a one in three chance to win so why not just go for it?

Bravotv.com: Especially in the last episode they [Jonathan & Sanhurst] almost kind of played father figures during the show for you. What was that relationship like with the other guys?
The relationship with the other guys was very good. I love those two. Jonathan, he’s more of the father figure type of guy and Sanhurst is more of just like your best friend. I really was privileged to actually share a home with them for two months and have fun with them. I had fun no matter what we were doing.

Bravotv.com: In the last episode, you get to shoot with this amazing photographer in the first part and do the whole Polaroid challenge with that camera. What was that like?
That was my favorite photo shoot out of all of them. It wasn’t like "Do this pose." It wasn’t very "posey." It was more showing yourself. There was one of them that was pretty posy because it was a high fashion one, but then there was your portrait, and then there was there’s the group shot. And I felt like in the group shot, I did the best.

Bravotv.com: And then you had the Cosmo shoot. Did that just feel really natural to you?
Well that was probably one of my favorite photo shoots. It was very natural. And they just told me to act like that guy that girls want to be with and the guy that guys want to be friends with. And I was good in that and they said "You really are a Cosmo guy." And I felt very confident about that.

Bravotv.com: In your final catwalk, you had the more playful one, and then you had the Ben Sherman one, what did you want to accomplish with those catwalks?
Really on those catwalks, I just wanted to show them that I’ve matured since the beginning of the competition and that I know what I’m doing and I’m ready to be a supermodel. That’s really what I was just trying to show them. And I felt a little awkward and funny in the whole suit I had on with all the bows. It was kind of weird. But, it was fun. Bravotv.com: They kept saying you went from a boy to a man. Like the first episode you were struggling with maybe [the fact that] you were working with a gay model and you kind of made a big deal about it in the first episode. Do you think that your mind has totally just opened?
First of all, at the beginning of the competition, I was not homophobic. I have tons of gay friends. I just felt uncomfortable for my first shot because me and my mom and everybody were talking about it and stuff and I just don’t want to be portrayed that way even though I love gay people. They’re some of the funniest people in the world. But I just felt a little awkward to do anything like I wasn’t going to go past the point of kissing him. I would not have kissed him. [He] was like "Why don’t you guys kiss" and I was like, "Hell no, dude!”

Bravotv.com: What was your favorite challenge?
My favorite challenge was probably, I would have to say, the Timothy Greenfield one, with the portraits. That was just awesome. It was so much fun.

Bravotv.com: One of the judges asked you an interesting question: You are so close to your mother. Once your modeling career really starts, you’re going to be traveling all over. You’re going to be separated from her. Have you thought about that and how you’re going to handle that?
Me and my mom talked about it a lot and I’m ready to get out there. I’m ready to leave home. I’m 19 years old now. I’m just ready to get out there and find out what this world’s got to give me.

Bravotv.com: What are you going to do with the money?
With the money, I’m getting my mom a nice car, and then I’m going to move to New York. And I have a couple bills.

Bravotv.com: Well you won, so are you going to take Nicole out?
I wish!

Bravotv.com: Do you have any final thoughts about this season that you want to share with your fans or want to say anything to them?
I just want to say to all my fans, thank you for believing in me and helping me along the way. It was a great season. It was a great accomplishment and it was just a great privilege to have and I’m very privileged to have fans like everybody that I’m around. So, thanks to everyone.
