In Episode 7 I am happy to report I got to spend some fun time with my BFF Kathryn Ireland when we head off to Palm Springs together. Kathryn, exhausted by all the shenanigans with her client Shannon Factor, comes and joins me for a little R and R while I fix up the Palme d'Or, the luxurious presidential suite of the Colony Palms Hotel that I designed several years ago. The suite had been used by one of the properties' owners and was decorated in his personal taste, so when the suite was offered back to become part of the hotel, they called me to step in and give it that MLB touch. I had worked on it for a month or so, working up my design scheme to tie in the existing vibe that I had previously used in the rest of the hotel. I didn't quite realize how long it would take to install everything, as I had the curtains and painted wainscoting done before I arrived. Poor Kathryn was eager to have a playmate to drink, lounge, and entertain her. Sadly I had to fluff up the pillows, hang art, and generally create an ambiance fit for the celebrity clientele that frequent the property now, so I didn't get to indulge in all the decadent delights that Kathryn enjoyed. The up side is that my clients were thrilled with the suite revamp. It has breathed new life into the hotel, and my darling Kathryn got to relax, recharge, and sip upon a few pink lemonades that I'm sure weren't quite as innocent as they looked!
And speaking of hotels, my favorite duo, Mary Mcdonald and Nathan Turner, travel to North Carolina to launch their new collections of lighting and furniture at High Point, the biggest designer manufacturing convention in the country. The poor things however end up in a hideous, dumpy hotel room that literally looked like some horny locals had just finished a whip-up in there seconds before their arrival! I'm happy to report they survived the experience, and both their collections have done extremely well. Nathan in fact launches his big window of furniture at Bloomingdales in NYC this week.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE U ! u r the best designer on the show, if it wasn't for u I wouldn't watch it. leila- xox
LOVE YOU!! You and Kathryn are such fun together!! Love the room you created for a buget of 50K. Beatilfully done!! Love the curtains, they were my fav.
For heaven's sakes.....that is probably the BEST Comfort Inn in the country!! Go visit one in LA! I bet you will find much worse.
NC does offer the finest in hotels...including the Ritz Carlton. Better make reservations ahead of time in the future.
P.S. I loved you until I saw your comments! Very judgmental indeed! I expected more from you!
Love you - love your designs.. would love it if you put together a where to shop for us Angelenos and those who are visiting...
Martyn - How I Love! Love! Love You! I love how you walk into a room and make the magic happen! You need your own show! Thanks for great design and personality! Blessings!!!
Please stop saying things like "I designed this hotel". No you didn't. An architect (or more likely, a team of architects) designed the hotel. You decorate interiors. That means that you don't decide on the siting, the roof pitch, the finish materials or the floor plan, the reflected ceiling plan, or any of the other things that go into building design. You decide what furniture goes into the space. If you had to go through the licensing exam to become an architect, you'd realize what a slap in the face it is to architects for NON building designers to constantly lay claim to designing buildings.
MLB...you re the MOST entertaining person on this show. I could listen to you endlessly. Your design of the suite looked beautiful, and your scenes with Kathryn are fantastic. Loved how you finally found her fast asleep...Congratulations on another successful design, and thank you for sharing your fab style with us. You must come back for another season. You are divine!
I LOVE having you in my living room every week, Martyn! Don't go away! When does the next season start?
You make me laugh out loud darling. Your "quintessential" idea of a room that exudes "sex" is interesting.
I jadore that you all get along so well it appears and the dynamic between you and Kathryn is priceless! You are brilliant beyond and have a fantastic energy, Many blessings and come back soon!
@ Lorraine73..When an interior designer states that they designed a hotel or a house or a room, most everyone knows that they are talking about the interior and not the actual building. Alternatively, most architects know very little about interior design which is an art unto itself. Great interior design enhances the architecture and many times corrects the faux pas in architectural structures that make no living sense. The architect and the designer need to respect each other as their successful marriage of talents is what awes people out of mediocrity in living.
Love the ethnic, eclectic suite redo Martyn. The rooms are homey, fun, rich, yet so comfortable-casually chic. I adore you...please come back soon. Can't believe the season is almost over..) :
Love, Love, Love, MLB!!!! My husband and I tune in every week just to see you. You're not only incredibly talented, but you're an amazing human being. I'm saying this because you're so kind and gracious to everyone you meet - from the chauffeur in Mexico to your millionaire client in New York. We're in love with MLB!! Bravo needs to give you your own show!
@queenofshades: How wrong you are that "most architects know very little about interior design". Who are these architects you know who are design-ignorant? I know many architects who have fabulous design sense. One of the most famous American architects (not that I knew him) is Frank Lloyd Wright. His building designs sometimes included designing furniture and even china patterns for a space. Those designs still hold up and influence furniture, fixtures and fabric designs of today. What did he think of interior designers? (Not that I agree completely) - He called them "interior destroyers".
You and KI are my favs - SO TALENTED!!!!! I love your demeanor - so kind.....and funny! And yes you DID do a great job DESIGNING The Colony!!!! I am going to miss the show sooooooooooo much!
Martyn..........please show us your whole house! Only saw a little bit as you bid farewell to your sweet little doggie. Is his/her name DELICIOUS???? Say Hi to KI, my second favorate!!
Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to find the fabric for the curtains he used in the hotel? They are perfection!!!
