The results are in from Travel + Leisure's big and buzzy annual World’s Best Awards survey, and we've been drooling with wanderlust as we examine its findings — for instance on the world's best cities, and the best islands on the planet. Now, we're here to bring you a closer look at the best hotel in the entire world, according to the list, which narrowed the field to an elite 100 lodgings.
So where is this superlative hotel? Here's a hint: It's in the same country as the No. 10 top island in the world. Any guesses?
Well, the country is Indonesia, but it's not on Bali (which made both T+L's top islands list, and our own list of bucket-list isles). Instead, it's on the much littler-known Indonesian isle of Sumba.
The winner is a resort known as Nihiwatu, where the villas draw their inspiration from traditional local homes, with thatched roofs and ikat details.
The resort has 28 villas with 33 rooms in a layouts from one to five bedrooms. All have private pools. Nihiwatu sits on two kilometers of private beach, and the environs include 567 acres of unspoiled natural reserve.
Top-end service includes butler and babysitting options. And the whole resort can be bought out for 80 of your closest friends. (Just press your eyes shut and imagine.)
Spend your days surfing, snorkeling, ocean and river standup paddle boarding, free diving, spearfishing, deep-sea fishing, ocean and river kayaking, and other activities — and that’s just on the water.
On land, opt for hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, or a Land Rover safari. Visit the local villages and markets to see (and score) the Ikat weavings and local arts and crafts.
Naturally, the property offers a full range of spa services, plus daily yoga. And restaurant options focus on local seafood. Eat poolside at your villa… or consider dining in a romantic tree-house platform hanging dramatically over the Indian Ocean.
So just one question remains: Why aren’t we all there right now?
