Over the past few years, Mattel has taken great strides to diversify and expand its Barbie brand. The iconic toy line has moved far past its days of using only one doll template for all of its collections, releasing Barbies that young girls and women of all backgrounds, sizes, and shapes can relate to. In 2016, Mattel truly broke barriers with its Barbie "Sheros" line, which included replicas of powerful women like Misty Copeland, Zendaya, and Ashley Graham (Graham’s doll even had cellulite per Graham's request). Now, the company has released a new collection filled with inspiring figures and modern-day role models from all walks of life.
Ahead of International Women's Day this year, Barbie has decided to honor 17 historical and modern-day figures from around the globe. The first group within in the launch titled "Inspiring Women" features Mexican artist and feminist activist Frida Kahlo, Katherine Johnson (she made numerous calculations for NASA and broke barriers for black women in mathematics — and was recently depicted in the film Hidden Figures), and the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic ocean, Amelia Earhart.
In continuation of their "Sheros" collection, Barbie will be adding 14 new members including record-breaking Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Olympic snowboarding champion Chloe Kim, award-winning wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin, and UK boxing champion Nicola Adams.
Here's a closer look at Barbie's newest role models:
"As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie will be honoring its largest line up of role models timed to International Women's Day because we know that you can't be what you can't see," Senior Vice President and General Manager of Barbie Lisa McKnight said in a press release. "Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything."
The Kahlo, Earhart, and Johnson dolls can be purchased individually or as a gift set, which includes all three figures, and are available for pre-order now. While the 14 new "Sheros" dolls are not available just yet, you can join in on the conversation by sharing who your role model is using #MoreRoleModels.
