Kara explains why Sonyae was the winner and what each songwriter brought to the final challenge.

on Aug 5, 20110

First off, I am so proud of the growth that Sonyae, Scotty, and Jes made over the course of the show. If I were in their shoes starting out, I don't know if I would have been able to take the pressure of the episode challenges. This was a writing boot camp and the strongest (with the exception of Johnny) definitely survived. Their diligence, team work, and commitment to learning is what landed them in the final three. Their songs were fantastic this week, and I believe they all have careers ahead of them in music.

The Winner ---- When we first met Sonyae, we knew she had a gift for lyrics and concepts, which is one of today's most important components to hit songs. But, she was seemingly at a disadvantage because she didn't play an instrument and I wasn't sure how that would translate during the course of the competition. Thankfully we began to see that Sonyae is musical. She knows what chords fit her melodies and that's why she was able to win this competition. Many topliners don't play an instrument but they are responsible for some of the biggest hits out there today. Their voices are their instrument and they sing what they feel and hear in their heads. Her melodies always came from an emotional place and I think that is why she really impressed us as well. She consistently delivered week to week. She would be an asset in any room of writers in any genre. For me, she is a force to be reckoned with and I think we will be seeing a Sonyae song on an album any day now.

And then there's Scotty who was stuck in adult contemporary ballad land when we first met him. During the course of the show, he figured out how to make more contemporary tracks and teamed up with people that pushed him to be younger, more rhythmic, and hipper. His melodic sensibility was always there, he just needed to put it on top of modern tracks. He also started scrutinizing his lyrics more during the season and that culminated in his best work, "Beautiful You." That song is a great personal anthem and I want to commend him for really speaking about such an emotional and personal subject and yet making it so universal.

hey Kara the first season of the show was really terrific. Will there be a 2nd season? And being a songwriter myself, how can i get myself considered as a contestant for one of the following seasons? Is there an audition process that I need to be aware of? Best of luck with the upcoming season.

I really enjoyed the show and can't wait for Season 2! So glad to see Kara and Jewel as the main judges, they are both proven hit-making experts! Have gained so much respect for Kara on this show - she shines in this element. Loved all of the contestants, who were all very talented. Happy that Sonyae, a fellow Newark native, won in the inagural season. Her lyrics ...whoa...very powerful and thought provoking. Was rooting for Scotty for most of the season because imo he has such a good ear for melodies and is a strong lyricist too. These two would make an awesome hit-making duo. Jess was good, but I was really surprised that she was the third finalist - I was rooting for Brian or Johnny. Season 2 has big shoes to fill, but I will be there for every episode! Please hurry back!

I loved this show platinum hit and the contestants are great songwriters. However, the only contestant I didn't like was Nick because he got too arrogant and big-headed. But, he is a good at his guitar and a good musician to a young audience though. On the other hand, I can't wait for season 2! Btw, I love jewel too! Finally, I love kara so much cause she is a down to earth, honest, aggressive, sweet, funny, and beautiful person. She is an amazing singer, songwriter, producer, and record executive. Best to kara and God bless her abundantely!

Both my wife and I are song writers ourselves based in Australia and we loved the show. We were big fans of Sonyae and Scotty pretty much from the beginning. My wife was going for Scotty and I was all for Sonyae. I loved her final song. I thought you guys were right on the money throughout the show with your choices.

My whole family sat down together to watch this show. We all loved it. My three children were all very mad when Nick went home. Based on their reaction I think that Nick might be the better voice to the youth in music. I hope he finds a future in the industry.

I felt terrible the way Jes was dissed by the other contestants. Based on that alone I was disappointed she did not win. Talent is best with humility. Their arrogance was a big turn off.

I thought the season finale was fantastic! I'm so happy that Jes proved the doubters wrong. She was clearly more talented than Nick and many others. The all did a great job and I thought this was a great show!
