Jack: My Last Gay Nerve

Winning this challenge wasn't the only bonus for Jack Mackenroth!

What was your prior experience with menswear?
Actually most of my career, with the exception of my stint at Tommy Hilfiger, has been in menswear. However when you work for big mass market companies you NEVER sew or make patterns. That is always done overseas. So going into the challenge I was especially wigged out because I knew what tailoring menswear entails and I knew we had to sew our little fingers to the nubs.

The reason they don't do menswear on the show is because of the time needed for tailoring. A single dress shirt can have over 20 pattern pieces. UGH! My last gay nerve was wrecked.

Has this challenge made you more interested in designing menswear?
This challenge really reminded me what I was capable of doing. I have always been more interested in designing menswear. Women's fashion is amazing and I love doing it but I think I'll stay in menswear in the long run. Who knows. Time will tell....
Suddenly, there are male models in the room. What was the energy in the room?
Hello hotties!!!! There were so many nice asses in that room I was gagging. I've been objectified already so now it's my turn. Kevin's model had buns of steel. Nurse! And just like any good model should they would strip on command. I loved it.

I think I did some extra fitting of the inseam on my model just to make sure everything was just right. Granted we were under a severe time crunch so we didn't have too much time to gawk, but I know Christian and I were LOVING it! Maybe thats the real reason I like menswear design. Just sayin'.

We get to see a lot of shots of you in your underpants. Did you expect that? Have you gotten more attention since the show started?
Hilarious! I love the gratuitous undie shots. I work hard on my body and I did expect that the Bravo demographic wouldn't mind seeing it. I think it's a hoot. I've certainly had people at my gym approach me. It's all good fun. I'm a competitive swimmer so I've literally spent years in a speedo (not all at once) so it's really no big deal to me.

Who do you admire the most, among menswear designers?
Well when I think about that question I think "Whose clothes would I like to buy if money was not an issue?" I LOVE Modern Amusement, although that is a brand more than a designer label. I would love to be able to afford Dirk Bikkembergs, Tom Ford, Dries Van Noten, John Bartlett and Alexander McQueen--just to name a few.
That room seemed so panicked up to the end. What was it like to be there?
OMG. It was a hot mess up in there! The majority of designers bit off WAY more than they could chew (sew), and people were freakin'. I had to ditch a whole piece I had planned just because there wasn't enough time. The was fabric flying like hurricane Katrina. At some point someone yelled "This is just a sewing contest!" because so much of the outcome depended on how fast you could get your garment done. I was a little worried at one point that there would be some nude models on the runway. However I don't think the Bravo viewers would have minded that either.

How did you feel about being the winning designer?
I was really proud of my outfit. I thought my sewing was really immaculate and the fit was perfect. It was something totally wearable and I loved the color and fabrication. My first thought was " I just won a challenge on Project Runway...Holy Sh!t" I think I really listened to what Tiki Barber was really all about. My look was conservative but with a polished flair and he had to be able to wear it on the air. I think some of the designers lost that focus and were too outrageous.

Has Tiki worn your outfit on the Today show? Did you see it?
I expect him to wear it on the air soon. I'm so excited to see it. I'm sure he will look great. He always does. If he needs any more personal styling he knows where to find me. I can check his inseam as well. Just to make sure.

What was your relationship to Carmen?
I like Carmen. She talks a big game and sometimes she can take over a situation without really being invited but in the end I know she means well. WORK!!!
