Reality Out The Window

A challenge filled with all types of drama!

My experience seems to be -- even though there's obviously a variance every season -- that the designers have a better time with the challenges where reality flies out the window. You know a men's challenge or a sportswear challenge just throws them totally. So when I heard the drag thing I thought, you know what? I have a feeling we're gonna really be entertained. And see some imagination. So I was excited to see what they would do. And quite frankly, overall, it made me smile. I thought there was some real drama to it. I think that they had fun with it and you saw that.

Joe's winning queen, Varla Jean Merman, excuse me, is kind of the Kirstie Alley of the drag world because it's all about the gorgeous face and the sense of humor but Varla Jean used to be much bigger and lost a lot of weight, and so I think Joe had this fabulous drag queen to dress. And watch how fabulous she looks. And he really went for it I think that all his exclamation points were perfect. It fit fabulously -- really everything about it -- whether it was the anchor detailing or the little hat. The color's perfect on Varla. The belt was perfectly cut and fit the right way. I love the cut of the pants. There's nothing less than perfect about the look and on top of it it's so Varla Jean's character. It was like a naughty nautical. It's naughty-cal!

On the other hand, Daniel's look for Antia Greencard had no sense of anything that was special. It literally just looked like you went to a really cheesy wedding. And you saw the tackiest girl at the wedding and she was in this dress. So to me there was no real drama to it. And if Anita Greencard wants to be Nina Garcia, there's definitely no sense of chic. But I don't know if I think get the whole sense of a Latin-themed drag queen -- you have so much to play with. I think Daniel just totally missed it. I just think it looked like an ugly dress from a mall.

RuPaul was a fantastic guest judge. I think the interesting thing about having RuPaul is that certainly RuPaull knows about performance and what works on the stage, but RuPaul also happens to have taste. So, oh my God! A chic drag queen who knows clothes, really knows clothes. He really knows how they're made and how they're constructed. He also understands character and how the character has to come across here. And I think that was one of the other challenges for them -- to make sure that in fact the character, which therefore provided them with the theme, came across in an extravagant and fun way which you saw with Joe and Varla Jean. You didn't see it at all with Daniel. I mean other than the fan I had no idea.

Book tour updates, be sure to stop by if you can!

Hey kiddos!

The book tour for Fashion Inside Out is going GREAT! Big thanks to all those who have already come out to show their support to me, and to the book; I'm eternally grateful! I hope that you enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I'm still on the road for another week or so with MANY stops along the way. Because I'm typing this from the airport terminal (waiting for my flight to San Francisco to board) I can't post all the rest of the stops, so check out my Web site for all the times and locations.

I love you all and hope to see you sometime soon! Have a great weekend (pleeeeease don't put me next to the screaming baby ...)

Daniel xx
