The Persian Version

Reza: Keepin' it 100

Reza dishes on everything from his sexuality to Mike and GG's relationship.

Mar 9, 2012

Bravotv.com: Tell us some more about you, why you decided to do this show and what you hope people will learn about the Persian community in Beverly Hills because of it?
Reza: I wanted to be on this show for one reason and one reason only, and that is to bring awareness to homosexuality in the Middle Eastern culture and more specifically amongst the Persian population. And I have a supportive family, I have an amazing network that loves and supports me, but I know that that’s not the case for the majority. When you have the president of the country I was born in come out and say that homosexuality doesn’t exist in Iran, it breaks my heart and it reinforces the notion that people need to keep hush about this. I thought to myself: if me living out loud on camera will force people to either talk about it, acknowledge it, whether it gives a young teenager a glimmer of hope, or some confidence or courage to come out to his or her family, then whatever heat I take for being on a reality show, is worth it ten-fold.

Bravotv.com: Tell us more about your relationship with MJ? What do you think of her saying you guys didn’t actually sleep together?
Reza: MJ and I go back 20+ years. We have been very close from the day we met, she’s like a best friend, a sister, a confidant, a colleague. We work together literally in the same office -- our desks face one another. It’s amazing; it's like having a partner in crime 24/7, someone who’s always got my back, supports me, and when someone knows you for 20+ years, there’s like a shorthand when you guys talk -- we can finish each other's sentences or just look at one another and we’ll start cracking up because I know she knows exactly what I’m thinking, and I don’t even have to say two words. It’s amazing to have that kind of a bond and to have it last from high school until our mid-30s.

Bravotv.com: So she in the episode denies that you guys have ever gotten physical. What do you think about that?
Reza: I think that it speaks volumes about the stuff that Persians need to do to save face. It happened. I will put my $30,000 Rolex on it. Whatever you want me to put on it, I will put on it. Not only did it happen, it happened twice. Not just once, but twice. She used to have the biggest crush on me before I was out. She wanted to hit that from back in the day. She needs to stop tripping and keep it 100.

I am Loving Reza and haven't even watched the show yet.. Have loved the previews. Love ya, come to Dallas and visit handsome man. Lets grab a drink. OOOOPS, I don't like that you just said you have a temper. No hitting I hope

KT

You need your own show !!!! LOVE you !!!!

Reza is 100% the reason why everyone will watch and love Shahs of Sunset. Loved him in Episode 1 and on WWHL. Keep it 100!

Why do you Guys bully Asa who chooses not to be shallow?

Reza,

I can see you are the star of the show. I love your sense of family and keeping it real. However I don't like GG.

Dearest Reza,

You are amazing and I am so, SO proud of you. I hope you'll continue to keep it 100. I followed you on twitter, please follow back. I'm @SaadiaOnline.

Why would you throw your bestfriend "Reza" under the bus. Either it's not true and you're lying to make your bestfriend look bad and think it will somehow make you look "cool" OR you are telling the truth to make your bestfriend look bad an think it will somehow make you look "cool." Either way, you come across really poorly.

Reza, Where is GG's blog? I was astonished to learn she is 30 years old. She speaks and acts like she is 21. And what's with calling yourself Persian? The Persian empire hasn't existed for hundreds of years now. Do you know anyone who goes around calling themselves Roman or Mesopotamian? Persia was once Iraq and Iran combined. You guys are Iranian, not Persian. Maybe saying you're Persian has a better connotation than saying you're iranian. Call it like it is.

Reza, loved the show, but LOVED YOU!! Cant wait to see more!!

I DID NOT APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENT ABOUT ZALES ON THE AFTER SHOW... MY HUSBAND IS IN THE MARINE CORPS AND BOUGHT MY RING FROM ZALES. I WAS WATCHING THE SHOW AND YOU MADE THAT COMMENT AND IT MADE MY HUSBAND UPSET. HE SAID HE WAS SO ASHAMED AND HAD NO IDEA THAT ZALES WAS NOT A GREAT PLACE TO GET A RING. I ASSURED HIM THAT EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN PERSONAL TASTE... BUT STILL NOT COOL TO SAY THAT. IT WAS MY ENGAGEMENT RING AND HE HAS TO WORK REALLY HARD AS A MARINE TO AFFORD IT BECAUSE THEY DO NOT PAY WELL...

Reza, I loved watching you both in the episode and on Watch What Happens Live! My daughter-in- law is Persian, and we have been so excited about this show. This morning we had to message each other three or four times just to start the day, and we're both professionals. We LOVE the show, think you are totally fabulous, and we're really looking forward to the season. Keep up the great work. I especially love your desire to increase awareness about homosexuality in Iran, and your comment in the blog about giving a teenager hope made my day. You're a humanitarian!

Reza, thank you so much for doing this show, it's awesome. My ex-husband for years told my friends and family that gay people do not exist in Iran and if they did, they would be killed. It's so sad that he grew to believe that crap himself. My boys 19 & 21 sat and watched this together last night and they laughed their butts off. They and I all think you look exactly like their father, porn stache and all, you two could be twins. 2ndly, we all hope that it lets people see that Iran is not full of trouble makers, terrorists and fascists. There are real people living real lives, so look at the product.

Merci, merci, merci!

i am luvn me some reeza.....hoooooooooooooooot!!!!!!!

I had heard of this show and saw the previews, I haven't had a chance to actually sit and watch it, BUT I saw him on WWHL, and he had me on the floor cracking up at his antics and the things he says! He is SO FUNNY and SO REAL!! You can't help but like him! I WILL watch the show now!

Reza - you're awesome. Love you!! All the cast members are very interesting.

Why do you bully Asa? She chooses to be different. Instead of making fun of her, praise because she is brave enough to stand alone not join the crowd. She's my favorite because she flies her freak flag high.

conishkee 61 pts

Yeah, baby, you are so right.  I LOVE myself some Asa too! I also admire the fact that she's different in her way and she doesn't try to keep up with the Joneses nor does she give a damn who cares for it or not.  Hot dog!!  She chooses to fly above the rest with her own sense of style, without being conceited or cocky, yet still maintains a great deal of humility and realism.  Yes, Asa's my girl....

I love Reza! He is my new best friend and he has clearly stolen the show even before the first episode was aired! I love the way he looks which is a sexy version of Charlie Chaplin and Hitler (in a good way). He has a comeback for everything and is very realistic. It should be a Reza show and all the others should be dumped!

Whats up with all the designer name and price dropping? That is low class. A label does not make you a better person, it just shows you can afford some of the finer things in life. Great if you can afford it, I dont see the need to constantly say I'm wearing this or that.

Reza...you are a star for sure! Keep being you but do leave room for growth. You guys were mean to Asa. She's pretty cool in my eyes, doing her thing. As a gay man from a culture who see's you as an outcast, I was surprised at you for turning around and making fun of her for being different. @greatfallsfan-calling oneself Persian is equal to a person calling herself Latina. There is no Latina land. It's a cultural descriptive for people who share a culture//language/history. I know several people from Iran and Iraq who call themselves Persian and are not on TV. Have you never heard that? It has nothing to do w/being ashamed of your country and more so to do with having pride in a rich history. Love the show. Even though it doesn't represent the average Iranian, it's entertaining and refreshing to see Middle Easterners portrayed as multidimensional and not only as a bunch of extremist terrorists!

waiting for Mike's blog, he's so hot, he looks very hispanic

Props to Reza for coming out and wanting to raise the awareness of homosexuality in the Iranian community. HOWEVER, I'm not so sure the majority of people in the world, who have an IQ higher than 20, believed that homosexuality does not exist in Iran. You may be a cool dude, but the way you act and how they show you makes others watching CRINGE.....anyone watching can see the labels you are wearing. WHY do you find it necessary to talk about them each time they show you? So your Rolex was $30k....so what? Why mention the price? Who are you trying to impress? The favorite is by far VIDA......none of you can top her.

ASA is my favorite ! you and GG are low class people you come from the trashy persain family gharachedaghi they are known as the low class people of iran ! STOP BULLYING ASA and GET A REAL LIFE !

gharachedaghi- is the definition of the low class family in IRan eveyone in iran knows that gharachedaghi are low class

i dont know why your on your high horse your really nothing special ! Stop putting on this lavish act it doesnt suit you sorry but you will NEVER BE THE NEXT ANDY COHEN OR NENE LEAKES !

Watched the show last evening...thoughts...one of the worst "reality" shows I have ever seen...I see this lasting one season...shallow, empty and superficial!!!!!!!!!!!

love love love reza... lots of negative comments flying around from the persian comunity but i'm persian and i wish everyone would just take it easyyy. sure i cringed a little, but i also laughed. in the end this is a reality show and is meant to be overdramatic and over the top. so far i'm lovin reza, asa and mj's mom lol. so hilar.

Relax, Lisa T. He did not diss Zales. Reza hates "sales". All the stuff no one else wants so it gets marked down. Check out his video blog on Bravo. Nothing wrong with your Zales engagement ring. Thank you to your husband for his service, and protecting our right to speak freely! By the way Reza, shave your moustache! You were much hotter in high school photos. Now you look like a Marx brother.

Relax, Lisa T. Reza did not diss "Zales". He avoids "sales" because in his words it's all the old stuff that no one else wants and has already been tried on. Nothing wrong with your Zales engagement ring at all! Thank you to your husband for his service, and protecting our freedom of the speech. And Reza, why don't you shave your moustache and show off your eyes? You were a hottie in your high school picture. Now you look like a Marx brother covering his face.

Loved the show and the after show on WWHL! You are a brave soul. Wish your country did not still live in the Middle Ages. Loved the whole casts except GG but especially ASA....I think everyone should let there Freak Flags Fly!

love, love, love you Reza, this show is the best..cant wait to see more.

Reza I was wondering you were wearing a pair of sunglasses in the first episode , If you could be soo kind what brand n style were they Id love too own a pair. Any information is possible and the show was great I cant wait too see what unfolds with the season. :)

Reza there is a pair of sunglasses that you wore during the first episode , I was wondering what brand and style they were. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Love the show and cant wait too watch what happens as the season unfolds.

Awesome job, Reza! You are hilarious and such a positive person.

Loved the show! I like all of you so far. See nothing wrong with ASA. She has depth and spirutaluty and everyone else is shallow and materialistic. If there is one thing you should all understand from leaving your homeland is "Live and let live". ASA is beautiful.

I have to say after watching the show asa is my favorite. all of you bully her. I would love nothing more than to see gg (who acts like a teenager) put in her place.

Reza you are fierce, honey. I also was disappointed to hear Ahmadinejad's comments about gay people a few years ago. You are very courageous to out yourself on national television. Best of luck to you and all the other cast members. Love the way you rock H&M!

Love this show, the food looked awesome. My sons think it's a riot, reminds them of their grandparents and aunt who are Persian. You all who think that these people are over the top, not real, not who they are are wrong. Some were born here and some in Iran. If you got out before the Shah you have all your money and more if not, you had to start over. My inlaws keep their home in Iran and live in Toronto. They left just 10 years ago while their son came in 76 to give him a better life. They have a ton of money, my husband is extremely well educated and a mix of all these people. They feel lucky and with that feeling are prosperous and thankful to this Country that they were able to do all the things they set out to do. Don't think for one second these people are not humble, because they are extremely humble, whether they are Moslem, Jewish or Christian. Give these people a chance, they are a very loving, generous, kind, people.

Hi, Reza

You're Handsome with great taste...why so single?...hahaha...anyway I just wanted to congratulate you on your new show...I just laughed a lot when I read on the last comment from MANDANA "Reza is a sexy version of Charlie Chaplin and Hitler (in a good way)."....hahahaha.....true...although I don't know if sexy is the right way to put it....:-)

Hugs....from Miami Beach, FL

Reza! You are by far my favorite Persian. My husband thinks you are the best too--and he usually hates all these Ryan Seacrest reality shows! You are so real and make the rest look ridiculous. Love, Love, Love you and please keep being yourself cause you are awesome!

Lisa D (Atlanta Georgia)

Reza, I watched the first episode and I loved you!! The show seems like it is going to be interesting. But I don't like what GG said "I don't like ants and I don't like ugly people." I can agree with her on the "ant" thing but not everyone in this world is pretty, handsome or beautiful! That is really not a nice thing to say. I know she's your friend but I have to say, she's not beautiful herself. I know that when you have money you can afford to go to the spa, get beauty treatments, buy nothing but the best so yes-you may look great but try not to hurt those of us who can't afford to get any of these things. I don't have alot of money but I think I am pretty and I don't need all of that make-up. I am going to be 49 this year and nobody can believe it. I always say "I have good genes, thank God!" Anyway, good luck with the show and I hope to see some interesting confrontations and situations.

this is for everyone that is confused bout why they all themselves PERSIA. Iran the countrys name was changed from PERSIA in the 40 s to IRAN indicating all the farsi speaking people of the region They call themselves PERSIANS because they are PERSIANS . The name IRAN suggests many many tribes that live there apart from PERSIANS. like azeri , turk , balouchi , armenian IRANIANS. PERSIA is a very very old as you know , so yes the name PERSIA brings about old old culture. It is not going away folks. Persian food, Persian carpet, Persian music , Persian cats, it is here to stay forever and ever and ever. so you all sound uncultured and uneducated and out of it when you make fun of Persians calling themselves Persians and compare it to people calling themselves Romans. What is this hatred or jealousy you all have with the word Persian ? why are you all so offended ? we are not confused , we are Persians so maybe you all need to catch up :p

Why would you throw your "bestfriend" MJ under the bus. Either it's not true and you're lying to make your bestfriend look bad and think it will somehow make you look "cool" OR, you are telling the truth to make your bestfriend look bad and think it will somehow make you look "cool." Either way, you come across really poorly.

Idk about this one Bravo. These people are 30 plus actin like children. One minute they're poor refuges the next they're throwin their snotty attitudes around. "We don't work in hotels, we own them" complete with the smug look and all. Yuck! I'm not adding another cent to their bank accounts. I'll pass!

Your friend Mike is not as hot as he thinks and at the end of this day you seem cool ,I think the people who are blogging about how their is a war going on with Iran and how can they show you guys having a good life one has nothing to do with the other. People please get a life and stop harrasing the cast of the show because of your feeling toward their country that they haven't been in since a child or never. If this was a show about russians or south koreans would you be saying the same things about them. This show is for entertainment people lighten up.

Reza, you are very funny, I like your honestly, and what you said: "we are all from the same cloth". very well said my friend. I look forward to more episode and wish you guys all the success. By the way tell GG to tone down a little; not sexy at all.

Lana absolutely looked amazing! She is an amazing and beautiful person inside and out! Love her....

Reza Joonie, I hope you will use this format to bring some deeper understanding to what it means to be a gay man in the Persian community. I also hope you will not further negative stereotypes of Persians as shallow and superficial. We have so much rich tradition, culture, poetry and music that goes deeper than that awful Tehrangeles stereotype. This is a unique chance to show the depth of our culture, and I hope you are able to do that.

OMG!!!! LOVE REZA!!! Total breakout star of Shahs! He is hilarious!!! LOVE HIM!!
