Burning Questions

Brig IS Shear Genius!

The controversial contestant reveals which stylists she still speaks to and what she learned from the experience.

Apr 7, 2010

Bravotv.com: In this challenge, you got to pick your assistants? Why did you pick who you did?
Throughout the entire competition I saw a personal strength in April that I truly admired. I knew 100% that she would give her all to help me execute my vision, regardless of how crazy it sounded to her. I chose Faatemah because I needed her strong styling abilities for what I had in mind. I had an advantage and didn't want to face either of them on another team. I was excited to put together an all female cast.

Bravotv.com: How do you think your two assistants worked out in the end?
Brilliantly. April and Faatemah helped with the final looks. They both gave their input which I candidly admit helped arrive at the winning end result.

Bravotv.com: Can you describe your inspiration a little more? Have you ever laminated hair before?
I had never laminated hair before or seen it done. It came to mind a few days prior when I was playing with a roll of clear tape, so I tried it on a piece of hair from my own extensions and it was very interesting. It seemed a bit nuts, yet intriging at the same time. I love taking risks at the chance that the outcome could just be genius. When Henry and I consulted, I asked if he liked comic books, and he told me how he just started collecting collecting Chinese comic books. Cool! That I felt was the "money" question to give me the go ahead with my idea. Imagine: Bjork as a villianess superhero.

Bravotv.com: Were you expecting the criticism you got from Jonathan about not using their real hair enough?
I rarely work with extensions in my salon, so I was thrilled to push myself. I expected criticism from the day I tryed out for the show.  I welcomed the different opinions, Jonathan's included.  Because I expected it.

Bravotv.com: What was going through your mind when your hair came down the runway?
It was insane, unusual, and most importantly elevated Henry's collection. I loved how the color story I chose came through, especially on the final model where I muted the color palette into pastels. I also was thrilled with the make-up. It really punctuated the entire look. When Matthew and Janine?s hair came down the runway I thought they put up very strong looks. Matthew took a huge risk by using the skull caps. I thought it was cool that he threw all his cards down on the table and went for it. Janine always managed to make the most of every second we were given. It is no secret that they both are extremely talented. Once again my work was the odd collection. I knew I was looking at something that I had never seen before. Completely original. That was all I ever wanted to do during Shear Genius. I felt like a winner at that moment and really did not care if the judges liked it or not.

Bravotv.com: At that point did you think you had it or maybe you lost it?
I was thrilled with myself for the concept and thankful for April, Faatemah, and Henry's input that helped produce the final looks. The entire process of the show to that point was such a arduous journey that I was proud that I took a HUGE risk.

Bravotv.com: Did you agree with the judges' comments for your own hair and your competitors?
I was on cloud nine to be standing in the finale and hearing Linda Wells say that she had never seen anything like it ever on the runways around the world.  When Henry (the designer) told me how pleased he was, I couldn't have been happier in a bathtub filled with Fruity Pebbles! As far as Matthew and Janine's looks... I don't recall what the judges said.  I was in my own world at the time.

Bravotv.com: Some of our viewers love you, some love to hate you (sorry!) -- how much of what we saw is the real Brig and how much is strategy?
What you saw was the REAL me strategizing for $100,000 in my greatest professional challenge. Early on I realized a few stylists were "blinded by my bow" and started saying I was crazy. I felt that being underestimated was not a disadvantage. I was so thrilled to be standing behind a chair in the Shear Genius salon. I was given a very rare opportunity to really discover what I could handle.

I can't beleive this decision..so dumb, she struggled the most in the competition, and covered most of the hair! I guess anyone can go on the show and just make a crazy hairstyle and win. It says a lot about the judges, and Bravo and I will NOT be wasting my time watching shear genius because it has turned out to be shear stupidity.

I think that this was a joke!!!! you won based on arts and crafts not on actual talent. Every challenge you did was never with real hair!!!BRAVO should be ashamed of these judges and their poor choice. Picking someone that has lost time and time again and did not appeal to the real viewers are even the judges!!! this is no longer a series that i would ever watch again!!!!

I am pissed off about the winner of the show. How could the person with the worst hair styles, worst attitude and never had won a challenge win!!! This was clearly about ratings, because two wonderful hairstylists just got slapped in the face. The show is about "DOING HAIR"!!! Johnanth was correct; however, you all did not listen to him. I am pissed and probably would not watch the show. It's subjective and wrong....A HOT MESS!!!

I will not be watching this show any longer. Brig did nothing but tape colored hair to the girls hair. This was not a hairdresser. She would never touch my hair. she was really not good in any of the competition

R u Kidding me! Hair is important? What kind of motto is that if you cant even apply it to the show? How did brigs show that hair was important? isnt this a show about hair? Cutting, styling, not Hiding. Brigs hid most of the models hair. Where is the beauty in that. Im going to start wearing a hat and tell people that the style is underneath! There, I too am a top stylist!

I will probably never watch this show again. You did not deserve to win. You were inconsistant and inexperienced...you only won for the wow factor. Like I said very disappointed...Jaqueline would have voted you off for one of your MANY Do snafoos.

I am never watching this show ever again. Once again, the WORST stylist with the least amount of talent has won. I find it disgusting and ridiculous. I used to love Shear Genius and have been watching it since the first season but with Brig winning, I have officially lost all confidence in the judges and have lost a little faith in humanity in general. The fact that someone as talentless as Brig won just goes to show that there is something wrong.

KUDOS BRIG!! loved your work, was blown away the judges actually picked the wild card. Way to go!

I hear Genius until one day I happen to cruise the stations. When I heard how the other contestants were dogging Brig, immediately, I was onboard for the show. I became one of Brig's biggest fan at that moment. Regardless of what I saw in her work week after week, I still noticed that she had that gleam in her eye to show what she can do. You did it, Brig! You Go Girl...

Gina Kirklin Louisiana

Really? i understand brig was trying to be completely original but laminating hair and playing around with electro 80's colored hair pieces is a bit overboard. i commend her for being different. but bad hair is bad hair.. you can't tape pieces to a head and call it high fashion. lets get real.. it was an art project!

I think the judges were nuts! Brig did very poorly throughout the competiton, when it required working with real hair on real people. The only time she did well was when she used fake hair, and did things that were more like an arts and crafts project, not styling people's hair. I think the judges were soooooo wrong to name Brig the winner.

I agree that Brig is talented, but for this FINAL CHALLENGE, I was totally with John in that, for a Hair Challenge....there was none. The hair was basiclly hidden under laminate. It looked like an arts/craft project!!! Janines styles always seem well done, but again for the final challenge, all 6 were the same style. I think Mathew should have won hands down! He gave 6 different, well executed and dramatic styles...I dont get it.

Brig has been mucking up everybody's hair the whole season and still wins. WOW. That's a load of bull. I will not be watching this show in the future.

Simply not impressed .she did not deserve to win

Couldn't have been more excited to see you win!

What incredible talent! Off the charts.

How the other stylists treated you spoke volumes about who they are as people. You didn't go that route. You didn't need to.

BRIG SHOULD NOT HAVE ONE, JANINE SHOULD HAVE!!!! JANINE WAS SO MUCH STRONGER THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE COMPETITION AND SHE ACTUALLY STYLED HAIR AND DIDN'T TAPE IT TO THE MODEL'S HEAD IN THE FINAL CHALLENGE!!!!!!

is in shock !!!! Im happy for her since she won, but all in all i think the other did better hair !!!! ITS almost unfair because both matthew and janine have better tech skills for sure !!!!

Brig was amazing! Nobody puts Baby in the corner!

I WILL NOT BE WATCHING SHEAR GENIUS EVER EVER AGAIN! I THINK BRIG IS A TERRIBLE HAIR STYLIST, AND I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT SHE WON. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT YOUR OVERALL WORK DURING THE ENTIRE COMPETITION!!!

Unbelievable. After Brig's winning with last week's Marge Simpson hairdo, she wins tonite with a 'not hair' hairdo??? (How many people are going to go into a salon and say they want that hairdo?) I'm with Jonathan -- she didn't style hair, she accessorized. She is SUCH a mess and a joke, it's an embarrassment to say that she represents California. That plays right into the 'fruits and nuts' opinion everyone has about CA. Very disappointing.

Brig?? Really??

Considering that she was in the bottom two for the majority of the challenges coupled with the snack wrap “hair styling” exhibited for the final challenge - the decision to declare her the winner just illustrates that this show is really about ratings not about talent.

Brig was controversial via attention grabing dramatics, she was not "genius" - certainly nowhere near the talent consistently demonstrated by Matthew and Janine.

Thanks Bravo for pandering to ratings as opposed to rewarding talent.

You Go Brig! Love your originality and how non-plussed you were when the other stylists would ignore you and huddle in their little clique. Proud of you and so happy you won!

~CONGRATS TO BRIG ON HER VERY CREATIVE & UNIQUE STYLES AND ON WINNING SHEAR GENIUS~

~ALTHO JON WAS MY "FAVE" ALL SEASON LONG..I AM HAPPY BRIG WON OVER MATTHEW & JANINE WHO GAVE BRIG A ROUGH TIME THRUOUT THE COMPETITION AND SHE SURVIVED TO BEAT THEM BOTH IN THE END~

~THE TITLE OF THE SHOW IS "SHEAR GENIUS" AND BRIG'S HAIRSTYLES WERE INDEED "GENIUS"~

I am really upset that Brig won. First off, I 100% agree with Jonathan. In the last competition she didn't really style their hair. Just put extentions in plastic and freaking glued it to the models' heads. I get that it's for a runway show so it has to be edgy and different. But WTF?! I guess that's why I'm not a judge or in fashion. But what mostly pisses me off is that throughout the competition she struggled and she always got through on thin ice or luck (like the water bottle). She's proven that she's not consistent. I honestly think the last challenge should have been about the entire competition. I think Jeanine did a far better job overall and even much better than Brig in the last one. It seems like Brig was only kept on the competition to keep the show controversial b/c of her beef with Matthew & Jeanine. I doubt I'll watch another season of Shear Genius but I am addicted to all other Bravo shows (Love Top Chef!). W/E bad decision IMO

Congratulations Brig!

BAD BAD . Wrong desition did not deserve to win , she was in the bottom 2 several times.

Congratulations Brig! Job well done!

CONGRATULATIONS BRIG!!! This 40 year-old West Texas gal has been rooting for you from day one. I admire the fact that no matter what, you stayed true to yourself by putting forth your own vision and I dearly love that you stayed strong even when other contestants spoke ill of you and tried to knock you down. You should be very proud of yourself because you've shown that there is never a reason to be petty or nasty. You may have joked around with your fellow contestants but you were never mean to them as some of them were to you.

When I saw the episode in which you stated that their comments couldn't hurt you because you'd lived with people making fun of you your whole life, you sealed the deal for me. I was officially a fan of yours because while I was rarely made fun of in high school, I was known to go on a rampage against those who made fun of others. (I'm pretty bland so there's not much to make fun of! LOL)

Brig, I truly wish you the best and I want to thank you for your performance on Shear Genius. You were strong, smart and you took the high road. I'd say that you presented yourself so well that you'd be a great role model for so many talented young people who are misunderstood in this country. I'd like to make a suggestion to you, if you don't mind. In light of your win on Shear Genius, I think it would be absolutely wonderful if you made yourself available to tell your story to kids. Just think about how much your story and your enthusiasm, strength and self-confidence could help so many kids! It's just a suggestion. I'm always trying to think of ways to give back and I think you're in a perfect position to affect a lot of lives.

Best wishes from West Texas!!!!

I agree with Incredulous. Brig couldn't style real hair, she used fake hair. The final competition was such a joke. There is no way she should have won. I will not be watching Shear Genius next season or ever again!!!

I would like to see her have her own show or to be part of the bravo team in some other way. she is an original.

If that is fashionable hair then I don't want any. Brig did not do any hair, she put plastic on top and called that a hair style. I'm not sure I'll ever watch again. The judges are hair stylists??????? Boooooooo

I am happy Brig won. She was more creative than the other two. It was like Matthew and Janine were trying too hard to be creative and Brig is just creative in her bones. She has a vision and they don't.

I think Brig did an amazing job; she utilized the "hair" in a different way... The rules never did say that she only had to do the models hair... She thought outside of the box & it paid off, she dared to be different and it worked. The other contestants just overdid or critiqued their already used looks.... Brig deserved to win, because she put her heart into that look & it "rocked"

BRIG!!!!! Congrats! I have loved your work from the beginning. You deserve this win!! Finally there is a stylist out there who is NOT afraid to try something new! YOU ROCK! Keep up all the great work! Your an inspiration, and I wish you all the best!!

I am a huge Bravo fan, and I'm in disbelief at what I just watched. Sadly, I feel this decision is a travesty and I will not be watching this program again. What a disappointing final selection... Brig was inconsistent throughout the entire competition, and just because she produced something that 'hadn't been seen before' for the final challenge doesn't mean she deserved the win. I question the judges and what considerations were motivating their decisions. Both Matthew and Janine proved infinitely stronger abilities in styling HAIR. Isn't that what this competition was supposed to be about?

What were the judges thinking I am in total disbelief that they even considered what Brig did as hair styles.

Brig should not have even been in the finals.

Anyone else really mad that Brig won?? I thought she should have been eliminated early on in the competition. I honestly think that they kept her on the show for the drama that was created around her. Based on the whole show, I think Janine should have won, but I loved Matthew's runway looks the best. I also didn't like that fact that she didn't incorporate the models hair in the final looks. Can she really work with real hair??

Horrible finale. Would never let brig 'style' my hair. She has no talent. I will never watch this show again. Cannot take it seriously now. Shame...

I'm stunned, shocked, and confused. I thought "Shear Genius" was supposed to be about selecting who was the best at cutting, coloring, and styling HAIR. I agree with Jonathan. Brig just accessorized her models. The other judges have lost all credibility. I feel like I've been suckered in, flimflammed. What a waste of my time! I won't be making that mistake again!!

Yay for Brig!! I was so stoked to see her win Shear Genius rather than one of the "Wonder Twins". I didn't like Janine's hair in the final challenge at all- I did like Matthew's styles but I have to agree with the judges about the originality of Brig's styles. Yay for the weird girl!!!

Throughout the competition I kept asking myself which one of the hairdressers would I want to go to for my hair and the answer was always Brig. So i was quite pleased when she won. Just want to add that my hairstyle and color and highlights are unique and am frequently complimented about how well it suits my face and personality. So I agree that 'hair is important.'

Well Bravo has done it again, in a competition about talent, it chose the person who brought the most drama instead of the one with the better skills. Brig should have gone home weeks ago and was just kept on the show to create more drama. I'll never watch bravo competition shows again, I stopped watching Top chef after the season before last. Thank god Project Runway left bravo and was able to keep some integrity.

Sorry BRIG. you are NOT Sheer Genious.

Each week Brig's styles were terrible, just a controversary for ratings. And to pick her are the winner... ENOUGH, I'm OUT!!!

There is TRULY a difference between coloring extensions and "hair on the head" - if she had colored the hair on the head and got those colors, Iwould have been impressed, but she knew she couldnt do that so she did NOTHING to the head hair. and basically all she did was color and laminate extensions and paste them on the head. It was RIDICULOUS!

Definitely NOT a styling genious. In fact, she is a MESS as her styles have shown.

Brig does not know how to do real hair. She was horrible throughout the whole competition, the only way she slid by through the competition was for TV purposes. I wouldn't let her near my hair!

This was, in the history of bravo disappointments, the biggest disappointment of all. Brig is not ahead of her time. Judging how poorly she performed in the other challenges (even the most basic skills), she will not make it anywhere. I honestly think Janine, Matthew, and Jon will fare better in real life. Thumbs down for you Judges and Bravo.

So glad the short bully did not win! Brig was definately different and creative. This season was really more about the red carpet styles and Brig can pull those crazy run way looks out every time.
