Burning Questions

The controversial contestant reveals which stylists she still speaks to and what she learned from the experience.

Apr 7, 20100

Bravotv.com: In this challenge, you got to pick your assistants? Why did you pick who you did?
Throughout the entire competition I saw a personal strength in April that I truly admired. I knew 100% that she would give her all to help me execute my vision, regardless of how crazy it sounded to her. I chose Faatemah because I needed her strong styling abilities for what I had in mind. I had an advantage and didn't want to face either of them on another team. I was excited to put together an all female cast.

Bravotv.com: How do you think your two assistants worked out in the end?
Brilliantly. April and Faatemah helped with the final looks. They both gave their input which I candidly admit helped arrive at the winning end result.

Bravotv.com: Can you describe your inspiration a little more? Have you ever laminated hair before?
I had never laminated hair before or seen it done. It came to mind a few days prior when I was playing with a roll of clear tape, so I tried it on a piece of hair from my own extensions and it was very interesting. It seemed a bit nuts, yet intriging at the same time. I love taking risks at the chance that the outcome could just be genius. When Henry and I consulted, I asked if he liked comic books, and he told me how he just started collecting collecting Chinese comic books. Cool! That I felt was the "money" question to give me the go ahead with my idea. Imagine: Bjork as a villianess superhero.

Bravotv.com: Were you expecting the criticism you got from Jonathan about not using their real hair enough?
I rarely work with extensions in my salon, so I was thrilled to push myself. I expected criticism from the day I tryed out for the show.  I welcomed the different opinions, Jonathan's included.  Because I expected it.

Bravotv.com: What was going through your mind when your hair came down the runway?
It was insane, unusual, and most importantly elevated Henry's collection. I loved how the color story I chose came through, especially on the final model where I muted the color palette into pastels. I also was thrilled with the make-up. It really punctuated the entire look. When Matthew and Janine?s hair came down the runway I thought they put up very strong looks. Matthew took a huge risk by using the skull caps. I thought it was cool that he threw all his cards down on the table and went for it. Janine always managed to make the most of every second we were given. It is no secret that they both are extremely talented. Once again my work was the odd collection. I knew I was looking at something that I had never seen before. Completely original. That was all I ever wanted to do during Shear Genius. I felt like a winner at that moment and really did not care if the judges liked it or not.

Bravotv.com: At that point did you think you had it or maybe you lost it?
I was thrilled with myself for the concept and thankful for April, Faatemah, and Henry's input that helped produce the final looks. The entire process of the show to that point was such a arduous journey that I was proud that I took a HUGE risk.

Bravotv.com: Did you agree with the judges' comments for your own hair and your competitors?
I was on cloud nine to be standing in the finale and hearing Linda Wells say that she had never seen anything like it ever on the runways around the world.  When Henry (the designer) told me how pleased he was, I couldn't have been happier in a bathtub filled with Fruity Pebbles! As far as Matthew and Janine's looks... I don't recall what the judges said.  I was in my own world at the time.

Bravotv.com: Some of our viewers love you, some love to hate you (sorry!) -- how much of what we saw is the real Brig and how much is strategy?
What you saw was the REAL me strategizing for $100,000 in my greatest professional challenge. Early on I realized a few stylists were "blinded by my bow" and started saying I was crazy. I felt that being underestimated was not a disadvantage. I was so thrilled to be standing behind a chair in the Shear Genius salon. I was given a very rare opportunity to really discover what I could handle.

Lesson learned people....She went, she played, she WON! It was a competion and Brig had her swagger on from the moment she walked in the door. She was not my choice and I was shocked when she won. However, she remained consistant (not styling hair) throughout the show and held true to her passion.

I can't believe it! Since the first challenge i have hated this girl and mostly her IDEAS and STYLE, she is a nonsense of style and i thing that if Mathew had winned or JANINE( I LOVE HER) i would have been jumping on my feet because "Brig" would have been a LOSER!!!:) okey i have just given my opinion. Kisses. Janine: don't feel like a loser because you are not a loser, Mathew; neither you!

WOW ... I must admit I do agree with some of the statements above!!! ... I live in Asia and only got to see the season in Oct/Nov 2010. I am absolutely shocked and disgusted that Brig won! I was watching the show DESPITE Brig being on, rather than because of!!! I might not be a stylist, however, it is blatant that Brig's only talents are abrasiveness, rudeness, crudeness and a natural all-encompassing LACK of style. I would NEVER let her or anyone like her touch my hair ... Honestly, I am disappointed in the judges and that makes me wonder about the intention behind the show altogether. One thing is for certain, I won't be watching it again!

That show was so rigged. Their is no way in the real world that girl would have won. She did nothing with the hair and the whole time throughout the show, she did lazy work and she did not show she knew how to do hair. The only thing she did was make circus hair.

I think everyone here pretty firmly falls into two categories: the lovers and the haters. I think we really need to separate empathy for Brig versus what she actually did on the show.

It sucks that she was treated so poorly by the other contestants (and really specifically by Janine) on the show. She didn't deserve some of what she got, and Janine, while very talented was [at least edited as being] pretty petty.

But this is a show about hairstyling. Brig showed she could be a good hairstylist, but she didn't do it in the last episode. Brig took some colored extensions and made hats out of packing tape. There was NO hair styling. She got the futuristic concept, but she left out any display of real hair-styling-related skill. For God's sake, one of the model's only had one sliver of pink hair on the side of her head. That was it. I suggest you all read Jonathan Antin's blog because he got it right. She could have easily incorporated her concept with actual hair styling as well. But she didn't. She fell in love with her gimmick, left out the real hair styling, and was rewarded for it. For her to win for what she did, she needed to be on a completely different show, not Shear Genius. For one episode, Shear Genius thought it was Project Runway. The judges (for the most part), lost sight of what the show was all about. It made a mockery of a loyal audience who patiently sat through all 10 episodes of an otherwise great season.

Janine and Matthew were awful to Brig during the course of the season, but this isn't a show about rewarding personality. This isn't even a show about choosing fan favorites like American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance. I watch shows like Shear Genius because I want to marvel at how great certain people are at what they do; things that I couldn't even attempt without years of experience and study.

I can totally wrap colored hair in clear tape and stick it on a model's head. Brig has shown herself to be a capable and occasionally great stylist. I found her personality (as depicted on the show) occasionally grating and occasionally amusing. But her ultimate win was a joke. She was not the best over the course of the season (as can be noted by her sub-par win rate), and she had a very creative idea that displayed little to no technical skill in the final episode. I am really disheartened by her victory.

I am happy Brig won! I was getting so sick of Miss Sassypants and her Sidekick! They were so certain that they were the best that they let it get to their heads... All the while Brigg was creeping up from behind (focused and ready). I believe Brigg grew as a stylist while maintaining her creative energies... Where as the twins maintained their talent but didn't grow-unless you count their heads! WAY TO GO BRIGG!!

I think it's sad that all these people seem to think they know more about hair styling than professional judges. And it's not fair they're being so mean about how they feel. I'm happy Brig won. She worked really hard for this even though was constantly put down by others. But she still went on to do what she liked and stayed true to herself. The wonder twins were so cruel. I'm glad the underdog won for once. :) yayyyy brig!!!

Brig hairstyles were awful. The red-carpet hairstyle of that African American woman? L-o-l. I think Matt should've won, but I liked Janine too.

After watching a lot of this program, I have to say that I am really thrilled for Brig -- not only is her style the4 most inventive and innovative but even as a person she was the most focused, honest and straighforward and the leaste petty, of all of the contestents -- she really make the show well worth watching for me and I wish her all the very best in her future activities

Wow...I can't believe she won. She did NOTHING technically to show any sort of skill. How difficult would it be to color pieces of hair, laminate them, and stick them to someone's head? The only thing she did to the model's hair was put it in a bun. Oh the effort that must have gone into that hair. Just because it's different doesn't make it good.

Neeyah

Brigs was TERRIBLE. in my opinion she didn't do hair, but covered it in plastic and bad hair cuts. there was nothing new and exciting about it. In the one episode where she was saying "I can't see what you guys are talking about" to the judge?!? WHAT? hairstylists have to see these things, and even I could see the problem, she was arrogant and ridiculous. plus, that nasty hair color on her head has to go, if my hairstylist walked in looking like that the chances of me wanting her doing my hair are slim to none. In my opinion she should have not won.

Brig played Shear Genius like it was meant to be played: a game of skill and talent determined by the judges. So what if no one liked her. She wasn't there to make friends or be liked by catty boys and girls. She was focused on the prize from the beginning and didn't bow down to nonsense. She didn't act threatened or jealous of others: I love people like that. Future Shear Genius players (wannabes): If you don't like the game: DON'T PLAY!

HotMessWon?!!!

No no no no. I don't care if she was expressing her personal style, true hairstyling is about making your client beautiful and happy, it's not just about gluing a baggie of hair to someone. Yes, it was different but NO WAY would a REAL person wear that! I am sick seeing this hair. What a slap in the face to true hairdressers who are out here styling real people.

I won't lie-i was kind of disappointed. I liked j's style. She did good work. Yes brigs very creative but I would have liked to see more work with the girls' real hair, she used extensions on almost every challenge. I think that the looks and fights may have been editing, reality tv likes to play up the drama. Like on antm and stuff. It just made me upset the mean things brig would say, they were all catty but what can I expect. I wish her the best of luck and everything. I just hearted j's designs.

Perhaps I wouldn't have been so on Brigs side if the "wonder twins" as they have been called hadn't been so nasty. The looks that Janine would throw Brigs way really turned me off and from the time Janine spoke up and saidn Brig shouldn't be there.. I was on Brigs side. Yes she did a lot of "out there" stuff but on the runways and in print that is coming the norm. I love Brigs inovation.. and loved the last show... KUDO"S Brig.

I wonder how many of these comments Janine and her cronies are responsible for?

I applaud Brig for not bowing down to the wonder twin's high school antics.

I thought Matthew was way talented and was sorry he fell in with Janine. He must have been desperate for a friend.

I have to say that Matthew and Jeaniene's looks were GREAT, but I really think Brig deserved to win. She did! And I'm really happy about it. Brig is creative and has really done some great things especially with the branding, it was DEFINITELY her. So don't underestimate anyone in a competition. ;)

You stayed true to yourself and focused on doing your thing!

Congrats and best wishes!

Brig does not deserve to have won this competition. Her nasty attitude and arogance were all she contributed to this show and she should have been one of the first to go! She is full of envy and rude manners and I am disappointed that Bravo bought into that. Matthew and Janine should have both won and split the $100,000. Brig you are non deserving of the prize and you know it!

Are you serious? What an atrocity to fashion. That has to be hands down the most ridiculous thing I am have ever seen. I mean come on lets have 6th graders cut their art projects out and paste it in our hair and we will all be fashionable. If you want to have a good show have the judges be normal people who aren't so called experts. The so called experts have been in it so long I think someone could put dog poop in hair and they would call it SHEAR GENIUS!!!

WhatWereYouSmoking?

I will never watch Shear Genius again because I believe Brig was kept around because of her abrasiveness to others. It was really annoying and not what kept me watching from week to week. I prefer seeing genuinely talented people get rewarded for their efforts. Brig should not have even been in the finale. At least Jonathon got it right.

This show sucked this season for two major reasons....Camilla and Brig. What judge with a brain, or even half a brain, thinks that putting fake hair in a plastic bag and taping it to a models head in a "great hairstyle". If thats the case, I'll avoid your salons at all costs!!!

BrigFail

Just check the bravo forum for this show. Brig is an artist. Ill give her that.. NOT a respectful hairstylist. Boo for Bravo and boo for Brig. You can call me a hater all you want, but the "focus" was on hair, not accessorising.

I MISSED THE LAST FEW EPISODES OF THE SHOW...SO WHEN I SAW BRIG HAD WON, I DID'NT KNOW WHAT TO THINK! WHATEVER SHE DID IN ALL HER ZANIEST, SHE PULLED IT OFF! SO CONGRATS TO HER.

I am not mad at the judges, nor the contestants. I am mad at myself for spending almost three months watching faithfully to see this finish. I wonder when we will see the women judges wearing ANY of the styles that won on the last night. If this ever happens, I hope Bravo puts the picture up on their website. I would just love to see it. Can you imagine anyone anywhere wearing those hairstyles other than on a runway for the avant garde look, which of course would NEVER sell to 99% of the population. Can you imagine how heads would turn, and not in a good way, if you saw those styles on the red carpet or at a huge televised social function.

Congratulations to Brig for making fools of all of us!! She truly must be laughing all the way to the bank.

WTF! Seriously!! I am seriously outraged! The competitions and her attitude - she was always on bottom!! I was rooting for Matthew and Janine!! Her outrageous style maybe fine for haut couture runway shit but this is REAL LIFE, people don't wear Bee-Hive hair do's in real life! I feel like I got punk'd and waiting for the real winner to be announced!

I guess controversy sells - you have people lined around the block to add comments on this blog!

I can not believe that Brig won its a disgusting insult to hair dressers and makes me really wonder what the show was actually about. Good for her and her own style but someone on the bottom the whole show doesn't deserve to be winning any of the prizes given.

This show really needs to figure out what it is all about. Just because the judges had never seen this hair before, does not make it good hair. I am confused as to the point of Shear Genius. Weekly the contestants are criticized on style and skill and it takes all they can muster to make it to the next challenge. But in the end, it was doing something odd and strange and absolutely not translatable to life that won Brig $100.000.00. That is insane. I can understand the judges being blown away, excited even b what she did, but in no way should that have translated to a win of that magnitude. I too will not watch this show again.

Brig should have been eliminated WAAAY back. Remember the inter-racial snowman? That should have sent her home. Then later it was totally unfair that they sent home Brian instead of her. At that point I realized that they were keeping her on purpose, for the controversy factor. So, since the show is apparently a game about getting attention and ratings, I guess she deserved it for her crappy so-called "hair-styling." But if the show were actually about being a great hair stylist, Matthew or Janine would have won! Everyone knows that, it's so obvious.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME! BRIGS!!! I do believe the show is called Shear Genius NOT Shear how many extensions can someone put on one persons head.

Hair Is Not Important
Hair Is Not Important

It is sad. Not only was Brig's hair sad, but the clothing and her attitude towards her competitors were sad too. If that is the future, I am not going there. Winning $100,000? I recommend investing it in a well-rounded education for both Brig, and the clothing designer, and in a slightly different profession. Perhaps Brig could open up a skating rink, and the clothing designer could design clothes that look like a kid fell down and ripped open. OH. Never mind. He already designs this kind of clothing. Why does this season feel like someone just died? Was a decision maker behind the scene grieving? So sad.

Brig totally deserved the title. She prevailed in the last two competitions. She knew herself well by successfully branding herself and giving signature hairstyles that were her own. She might not be as skillful as the other two finalists, but she got the originalities and knew how to use them to her advantage. You can develop skills as time goes by, but talent -- you either have it or you don't. Congrats, Brig.

Brig winning really was a slap in the face to everyone. Matthew's styles all throughout the competition have been AMAZING.. the zippered mohawk, IMO, was the best hairstyle on the last episode. Brig used a roll of freaking tape.. I'm a mom of 2 kids, I have tape, jelly beans, peanut butter, something in my hair at least once a day, lol. Janine was awesome too.. much better than Brig! I mean, really?! Why do this, Shear Genius?! To prove it's 'okay to be different'? I wouldn't let Brig do my hair if you paid ME the $100,000, seriously. Matthew should have won, Janine in a close 2nd, and Brig.. shouldn't have even been there.

I will never watch this show again. It was a hairstilist competition not a costume party, all hairstylists should feel very embarrased and sad. Brig was awfull, will you go to her to style your hair? or maybe borrow one of her Minnie Mouse bows?.
