Bravotv.com: The Shortcut Challenge was their first time working solely with African American hair. How do you think they did?

To be a well-rounded stylist, you have to be able to do every hair type and work with every hair texture. Every stylist should be able to work with any and every hair type. I watched each style and I watched a little of the preparation and I was kind of left with disappointment. I really didn't feel like anyone really shined. Janine's style was almost twisted and pulled back and wrapped with that gold lace and I felt that if you smoothed out the whole hairline you could basically leave the rest of it to be completely frizzy and you could wrap it around so no one would ever see. I think Brian did a decent job. She looked a little bit high school prom. Quite honestly, I disagreed with the guest judge. I don't think a half-up, half-down makes a girl look younger necessarily. I just think the way he left those curls was very hair-do on top and then the length underneath was kind of prom-like. If he had taken the curls out and smoothed them out and left them hanging, put them up and secured them and then leaft it hanging down, that's a very hot Brigitte Bardot meets early Diana Ross look. There's nothing too young about it. It's very sophisticated and sexy. I just think that Brian, again, wrong execution. However, I think he smoothed out the hair pretty well. None of them smoothed it out so it was actually perfect. I thought they were all decent and everybody did work where you could basically go to a salon, pay them money, and you would get your moneys worth. None of them were cover-ready hairstyles and that's the way it's got to look. With the skill set of these stylists and the number of people left, you really got to step up to the plate now and you've got to make it happen.
You have to bring everything you've got to the plate and you've got to shine. I just didn't see that from the Shortcut Challenge.

Bravotv.com: What did you think of the Elimination Challenge?
Bryan was doing that Edie Sedgwick thing. Her hair was so far from Edie Sedgwick. Edie Sedgwick's hair was a classic example of perfectly f---ed up hair. There's a difference between f---ed up hair and perfectly f---ed up hair. Her hair was just f---ed up. Edie's hair was perfectly f---ed up. I do this kind of hair from time to time, where I do a perfect cut, and then I'll go back in and perfectly f--k it up. It's basically like you're going to go in and texturize it, beat it up a little bit. I actually use the phrase "f--k it up." I say it all the time, there's a difference. With Brian's hair the color was treacherous, and the girl wasn't the prettiest in the world so you really have to overcompensate. In the hair category, you have to lend a bit of beauty. When you're working with a girl who doesn't have the strength and features on the face you have to compensate for that in the hair. He made her look worse. He made her look less pretty than she actually is. She looked harder, miserable, and I think I said something about her looking like a heroine addict. She just looked terrible. And then there was Matthew, who did the Madonna-like bouffant. I really felt like Matthew's hair was perfect architecturally and symmetrically. Technically, the shades of colors didn't quite match exactly. In order to really get all the blondes to really match up, I'm not so sure they had the exact amount of time they needed. I probably would have needed three hours to get that perfect and styled for the cover of a huge magazine. As a matter of fact, I would have prepared the color the day before in the salon and then styled it for the shoot and it would have been perfect. He didn't have the luxury of that time but that's the way the challenge was designed. He did the best job he could have with what he had. His hair was by far the smoothest and as difficult as anyone's, if not more. If I were the only judge, he would have won that competition.

I think that Brig did nothing. She gave the girl some separation and definition in her curls, wrapped it up on the back of her head into a loose updo and let all the curls hang. There was nothing special and nothing that requires high level of skill. I thought it was nothing but it looked good. Sometimes less is more, but not when you're on a show competing for $100,000 to do the most interesting style.

That's it for me -- no more Shear Genius. "Shear Come On Now" is more like it. Thanks for expressing reality, but you obviously were outvoted. Too bad.

Jonathan.. Thank you for always being the voice of reason. Unfortunately, you're the only one with taste!!!!! I cannot believe Brig won the 100k. What a waste of money! Matthew should have won. :(

Hi Jonathan,

I was so thrilled that you were a judge on this seasons Shear Genius because I know how honest you are. You were truly the only honest judge on the show. However, the finale was insane!

I will never watch another episode again. Brig had no business winning at all. I think she was kept as a prop for more drama. Shear Genius is supposed to be a comprehensive talent evaluation. This was clearly not taken into account on this final decision.

Even if you choose to return next season I still can't watch. I have my principles!

Still adore you, though!! :-)

Jonathan, I'm so glad Brig won! I think the other two were just too mean to represent Shear Genius! And the fact that Brig has her own unique vision that they don't. I think you should take her under your wing and help her with technical skills - she already has the creative part down by far - that would make a great show! Also, I love the judges and the hosts this season. Best by far!!!!

Is Brig kidding with those crazy tubes of fake hair. That was not artistic... perhaps 1st grade crafts. I am surprised she did not pull out the Elmer's glue, multi-colored pipe cleaners and some popsicles sticks to finish off the look. That was the end of Shear Genius for me.

jonathan has the best taste by FAR of all the judges. i watched the finale and was in shock. the cellophane pieces as "fashion forward"? i honestly wanted to laugh. the judging was a wreck and somehow there was one lone voice reason who had the show hijacked from him. the show just lost all credibility. they should ditch the host as well as kim lame-o vo.

I can't believe Brig won! I'm so disgusted with the judges decision. Everyone kept saying, 'she thinks out of the box,' or was it out of the bag of fake hair. Brig should have been cut along time ago. She is the worst hair stylist if you want to call her that. And definitely not a shear genius. I can't imagine she has clients. I think the producers planted her in the show to deliberately win. She was soo Arrogant and condescending to the others which reveals she is a bottom feeder. Every time I had to watch her I wanted to vomit. The judges and producer on the set must have been smokin something to let her win. She did not deserve it! What planet is Brig from to have plastic bags glued to no style hair on her models head.

My favorites were Jon and Janine. I stopped watching after the judges cut Jon. Janine should have won!

I agree with gkh about Jonathan and the producers.

Hostess Camille has a hard time speaking English and added nothing to the show. What did she say? Jacklyn Smith was a drag, don't bring her back. Find someone else.

I won't be watching the next season! I'm spreading the word this show needs resuscitated.

I agreed with your comment at the finale. Brig did not do great hair because she did not actually style hair, she used tape and colored pieces of hair which is something I do not consider hair styling. Out of them all on the finale elimination, I believe Mathew should have won because he did the best. I would not let Brig go near my dog!!

I have a question. The first voting opportunity was between all the stylists; the second between the final four; and the third between the final three. How could anyone BUT one of the final three win the fan favorite when you couldn't vote for anyone but one of them? I'd like to know how this was determined.

OMG!!! How can you consider Brig a HAIRSTYLIST??? I totally disagree with the winner I won't be watching next season or anyother that followe. BOOOOOOO

Brig deserved to win BRAVO! It is great to see someone who thinks out of the box and brings fresh new ideas to the table. The show definitely needs a new host, please pick someone that has a background in hair, no more "past their prime" models that have trouble speaking English. I also feel the judges are getting a bid long in the tooth. There are some really great people in the hair business that have the credentials to be there. Think young, fresh, talented and relevant when choosing new judges. I loved the guest judges that were brought on this season.

Dear Jonathan,

I am extremely disappointed with the winner of shear Genius. I will never watch the show again because it is so bogus. It really was a joke. I am not a hairdresser and clearly could have done better than that person Brig you and the other judges supposedly selected.

How could you ( by you I mean all of the judges), have not selected Janine who won the most challenges, or Matthew, who did superb work as well. The two top hairdressers are eliminated, and the loser, annoying, big mouth, talentless person who was continually in the bottom WINS!!!! Is the show kidding?? The show lost all credibility for me right then and there.

At least you stuck to your guns, and had the strength of your convictions to be truthful in all of the eliminations. You clearly know your business regarding hair. I watched your show Blow Out, and always loved your hairstyles. You knew that Brig was a joke!! I wished you could have convinced the other judges, whom I question their right to be judges of hair.

Well that show just lost a viewer, stay true to your convictions. You are the true "Sheer Genius" of hair!!! lol. I wish I could afford to have you do my hair. I can only dream. I hope all is well with your wife and baby. Take care,

Sincerely, Just a suburban mother RoseAnn

You do not seem to have much say in who wins.... This last episode is my last episode. She seemed to get by by the skin of her teeth in each round. She was most always in the bottom. The last was just horriable....I know it was something that we have never seen before but it does not make it good. I wanted to see hair styles....not plastic wrap around their heads. If I saw that on a runway I would have to laugh. As a matter of fact I did laugh. I have no idea where the judges came up with this win but it was so very offensive to me. Please tell us what hair products she used so I can be sure to avoid them. Again I find no reason to watch this show in the future. If she is your idea of shear genius you all need to get another job....

I cannot believe that Brig won. How does someone who does not actually style the models hair and who was the worst stylist in almost every single challenge suddenly become Shear Genius. Matthew and Janine won almost every challenge and actually styled the hair. This show has just lost a viewer. This is not a show of talent but of sesationalism.

Jonathan first of all ...great news and mighty congratulations on your new venture. Your previous line of products were the only ones I'd ever bought a 2nd, 3rd & 4th time. Excellent ...now the line goes "futuristic"! I can't wait.

You are a little conservative, but accurate in your comments about Brig's hairless win. I am a wild and crazy conceptual artist and I could have outdo'd those final artpieces for sure.

Still....it was not bad art.

How, could you possibly have brig win!

She is arty, not a hair stylist.

She never touches real hair.

Bring Jacklyn Smith back, she seems tohave some common sense

Jonathan, I would be surprised if you would want to be back as a judge on Sheer Genius. Brig's final work was plastic wrap gone bad! Different, yes. Done well, absolutely NOT. What a joke. I will never watch the show again.

I'm sorry, I don't think I can watch "Sheer Genius" any more because of the bizzare finale. No wait... because Brig was kept at all, after her admitting she doesn't do african american, she doesn't do males, she's horrible with color. WHY was she kept and then made the winner? This show is obviously just the opinion of 5 judges and NO ONE else!!!

I feel your view is behind the times and this often leads to your insulting the stylist. Last evening proves my point. Hair is art and you are not capable of seeing that....... you have no place being a judge when you cannot see the art in a style... I think you are more of a victorian person myself

Maureen C.

All I can say is that you are the only judge that had a clue as to was great hair. Congratulations to you! I'm totally disillusioned with the show now after seeing the judges rave about the most idiotic hair I have ever seen - saran-wrapped heads in fake hair - lovely.

I DID NOT AGREE WITH THE JUDGES CHOICE OF WINNER LAST NIGHT. I AGREE WITH JONATHAN. BRIGG WAS NOT NEARLY AS TALENTED WITH HAIR AS MATHEW. JANINE WAS EVEN BETTER. MATHEW WON MOST OF THE CHALLENGES THROUGHOUT THE SHOW. HIS ABILITY WITH HAIR WAS FAR SUPERIOR TO ANYONE ELSE IN THE CHALLENGES. BRIGG WAS ARTISIC IN THE FINAL CHALLENGE BUT SHE DID NOT PROVE HER TALENT WITH HAIR. SHE CONTINUED TO BE IN THE BOTTOM OF MOST OF THE CHALLENGES. HER HAIR IN MOST OF THE CHALLENGES WERE NOT NEAT,FINISHED, AND HER CUTS WERE NOTHING SPECIAL EXCEPT FOR THE 40'S CHALLENGE. MATHEW'S CHALLENGE WAS THE BEST, BUT I AGREE, HE SHOULD NOT HAVE USED A HAIR NET. BUT IT WAS THE BEST FORTIES DO. I BELIEVE THAT YOU SHOULD USE A POINT SYSTEM THROUGHOUT THE COMPETITION. I BELIEVE THIS WOULD BETTER PROVE WHO THE BEST TECHNITION WAS ON THE SHOW.

BRIGG DID NOT DESERVE TO WIN. THIS WAS TOTALLY UNFAIR IN MY OPINION.WINNING THROUGHOUT THE COMPETITION SHOULD COUNT FOR SOMETHING. MATHEW WAS THE BEST.

I usually do not comment on any message boards but I truly believe that this season was a true farce. I do not plan to waste my time anymore but I would like to hear a true explanation from Jonathan on why this winner was chosen

Sorry I don't agree with you
Sorry I don't agree with you

The choice that you made for shear genious was so bad. I had seen this look in the 80's and 90's. Flash backs from Kyle videos. There was no hair styling at all in Briggs, work, none at all! I am very disappointed on the out come of the show. If you want hair extentions fine and colored even better. Can I color feathers and but in bun up hair with plastic and win shear genious too. Hair people is the game and if you wanted this so bad you should have named the show best top hair pin. In the end the winner had no hair style at all, what a waste on a show that is about hair. Name your show Shear fake.

There is a BIG difference between coloring extensions and hair on the head hair. She did NOTHING to the "real" head hair and it what she did could NOT be judged the same as the styles on the others. While Janine has been the most consistent all season, I though Matthew's styles were the best and most story worthy. I dont get Ken Vu saying there is no continuity, if you looked it certainly did flow What Brig did WAS NOT win worthy. I could care less about Lady Gaga. that crap is NOT style at all This show is supposed to be about finding talented stylist. NONE of Brigs styles, week after week, were any good. She really should have been eliminated a long time ago. Aftert his finale, I will never watch Sheer Genious again, I realize the judges have lost perspective about hair and more about ratings. Goodbye good riddance

Why...Why ...Why does Jonathan have to use foul language? I watch this show with my 13 year old and I'm about to delete it. It IS NOT NECESSARY. For once, can a reality show be worth watching? Please try to be professional. I would like to think you do not talk like that around your clients.

I am really starting to get upset for the last three weeks I have been waiting for a winner to be decided on the 1940's challenge. This week is the last week for the show I am really hoping that a winner will be chosen. Bravo offers a challenge, people take the time to do the challenge and submit the pics and then nothing is done as far as picking the winner. Bravo don't let us down. Do your part and PICK A WINNER!!!!

I am so upset. I have been a cosmetologist for 34 years. I own my own salon, I have a teachers lic, for the state of Ma. and for the board of Education....for Cosmo as well....My daughter is a hairstylist as well....We have a great salon.....What I am most upset with is the only one of two who I feel had talent is gone....and the other one has a I am great attitude and Janine...should just back up and remmeber where she was jst years ago when she got out of school....Even at my age 52...I am constantly learning, going to classes....and loving every min. of it....When they have been given the challenges...I have sat there and thought up what I would do first before going on the with show and I am amazed what people are thinking.....WHAT in the world...Rules are rules....Tuff...and SWEARING well, you what...it would not be tolerated in a salon...would it...? I have said enough....

I have to agree that Janice and Matthew have the most talent and skills. Jon, has great color choices and applying them. I wouldn't have him cut or color my hair because he second guesses himself to much and shows no solid direction. If you have to have a drink to cut hair, really! Hit and miss is his game and he was lucky. Brigg as a art point of view is ok, but this competition is about hair and using most of what the client has. Even adding hair should be with the with most of the clients hair. Honestly Brigg should be out a long time ago. I have seen better colorist and cuts from regular cutters than Brigg, has. I have seen better from drag queens doing hair the way she does and they have a better look. Sorry Brigg, its true. Over all Matthew, show the most promise it he can come out from the clouds, But tell me a stylist that doesn't have a atittude about their work on hair.

Genius Who?
Genius Who?

I completely agree!!..it is like Janine and Matthew can do no wrong..if someone does something that you don't like but Janine does it..it is all of a sudden genius...look at tonight..nothing was wrong with Jon's hair and I would have to say he has never had BAD looking hair and tonight Janine's "fro" looked TERRIBLE! It is so obvious that Camilla just loves Janine!..I don't get it..in deliberation you guys talk about how great Jon's color was but then when they are standing you criticize it??? And Brig's yes was true to her style..but this is a hair competition and she never uses real hair!!!

Jonathan, I love watching the show! I think your view of directing the contestants is "right on" and you are very talented!

I have one question. Your continual direction to the contestants about being professional...(parapharsing) It is their commitment to doing what the client asked for, what the challenge asked for and what behavior they should execute as a "professional".

YOU as a judge should walk the walk and talk the talk! SO...WHAT IS UP WITH YOUR FOUL MOUTH???? You cuss right and left when telling the contestants what they did wrong! How professional is that???? Not COOL!!!!

I will not watch the final shows, I feel that Jon was by far the most authentic and talented stylist on th show. Brig's final styles are avontgargde but there is no reflection on true hair and beautiful hair. Please bring back Jon, he desirves to be back. Am truly dissapointed in your choices.

As a hairdresser for 28 years I can not believe Bragg is in the final this last task she showed no talent, anyone can throw hair extentions on a head not even useing her real hair and make something a statment bad bad judges until now I enjoyed this show,I will not bother to watch who wins. That hair was messy, fake and a joke.

Jonathan:

I have never been more disappointed in a Bravo show since Wendy Pepper made it to the finals in the first episode of Project Runway. Clearly the producers strong-armed the judges into cutting Jon and keeping Brig just to make the "drama" continue. You were the only one who questioned Brig's work all of the way through and I wish you could have stuck to your guns hard enough to beat down the money-hungry producers!!!

I personally think Janine will win it, and deserves to win it. She's a great stylist.

I think that if you felt Brigg did the worst there should have been an elimination. It was obvious during the session when you all compared stylists that she was the worst. It was a copout to not eliminate her. Bring back Jaclyn Smith! She was great and my husband's heart throb. I have no ill towards Camela but it seems she's trying to be Heidi Klum. All around she doesn't work for me.

As an African-American woman, I was very disappointed in the stylists performance in this challenge. They ALL made it very obvious that they had no personal experience to call upon. My stylist can work with all types of hair because, let's face it, that is what African-American hair is! There is no quitessential type of African-American hair...it is a melting pot. I have tried to find the requirements for consideration of new contestants for next season, unsuccessfully. Please direct me to information to help my stylist qualify for the show!

I can't stand Janine or Matthew. I personally think they do O.K. hair. I am African American and my African American hairstylist does a lot of caucasian hair, and I am floored each time he finishes because it is absolutely beautiful. That mess I saw up there with the African American hair was some bullshit! And Janine's version of Diana Ross the Mahagony years looked more like Diana Ross the Supreme years. The hair DID NOT move at all, it looked dry in the front and it was too damn big! I wish the judges would stop kissing her butt.

I used to love watching your show however this season I feel that it is rigged, you have already picked who will win. I'm sorry but I don't feel that Matthew and Janine are the best. You lose your audience when you have two people who by far are very arrogant. I know that gets you somewhere in the real world I am sure but they need to have some class.

Why don't yall save us the trouble of watching and just go ahead and give it to Janine. You want "the most interesting hairstyles" and yet smash anyone who goes outside the box.
