Best Foot Forward

Kim Vo explains why Brig's hair was hot, and reveals who does his hair.

Apr 1, 2010

Bravotv.com: First the stylists had to style Camila’s hair... Why do you think they all underestimated how difficult her hair was to do?
Camila has the triple-threat hair: coarse, curls, and enough hair for a small country.

Bravotv.com: Oribe is the guest judge — has he been as influential on you as the other stylists?
Oribe is a friend and legend. He is so well known in our industry.

Bravotv.com: If you had to create your signature look, what would it be?
Beachy waves and sun-kissed highlights

Bravotv.com: Do stylists usually cut/do their own hair?
No, we have friends and peers that do it. My wonderful assistant does my hair.

Bravotv.com: Which styles stood out to you for better/worst?
Brig’s stood out as the best … Janine not so much. It’s important to remember that if both looks are not strong then one will drag the other down. Put your best foot forward… but don’t forget about the other foot!

Bravotv.com: How has the hair industry changed in terms of importance of branding one’s self?
With the Internet and social virtual groups, branding is a must.

Bravotv.com: Can you handicap the final three for the finale?
Go big or go home!

Bravotv.com: Were you upset to see Jon go? (I was!)
I was very upset. This will confirm that we judge case by case – not overall or on a curve. Be on your game at all times!

Bravotv.com: Anything else you would like to add about this challenge?
If you’re wondering why she won ... you might know another eccentric person named Lady Gaga. Brig’s hair was hot and all her own.

I understand about competition hair and making a statement...all of that. But if any hairdresser ever did to my head anything even remotely close to Brig's styles last night, I'd shoot first and ask questions after I washed it out!!

What a bunch of crap. Brig won because it makes for better TV to have two people who hate each other in the final episode. She should have been gone a long time ago, this show has jumped the shark big time!

Lady Gaga is a caricature...and that's what she DOES...Brigg is a beautician/hair stylist/whatever you want to call it...but the point is to look make people look GOOD, NEAT, EDGY, BUT NOT the FRIZZY MESSES THAT NEEDS WATER POURED ON THEM TO FIX THE "DO"!! I DON'T KNOW A SOUL WHO WOULD ALLOW HER TO TOUCH THEIR HAIR..and my son is a salon owner in Palm Beach!!

Sorry, Kim, not buying it. Brig should have gone home ages ago and you know it. She definately should have gone home last week when no one had anything nice to say about the hair she did. This is all about drama and everyone knows it.

What you did in the end last night belied your comments during the photo shoots.

Yes, it was a "brand" which you were looking for. But it was ugly and unwearable. I would never go to her to get my hair cut.

Now that I've read your comments about Brig's win and I've had some time to think about it, it makes total sense. The challenge, as I understood it, was to make the hair about the stylist. And from seeing Brig's personal style throughout the season on herself, the 2 hairstyles she did definitely screamed "Brig!" Can't wait to see what happens next week!

I misunderstood the challenge. I thought it was about branding and marketing yourself. FYI: I live in the Midwst in an exclusive suburb. It might not be LA or NYC but I pay easily $150.00 or more for my hair appointments and I would never consider going to Brig if she marketed herself like in that manner. The hair was a mess and it did not look like it was fashion forward and edgy. There is a fine line between fashion and cartoon. Brig's looked like a messy cartoon character!

KIm KIm Kim.... Brig really needed to go home weeks ago...but the I guess tension made for supposedly great reality TV. I don't buy it. Jonathon said it best when he said he likes to see great hair but that wasn't it. He was SO right. It looked like a rats nest X2. Your first reaction when you saw it and the comments made while deliberating were very telling...you know that there was no way she should have won. If the show was called "Shear Nuts"...Brig wins hands down. If a good stylist needs to go over the top and be rediculous...you should say that up front. It surely isn't fair to the other competitors. These hairstylists are thinking about a advancing their career not to be the stylist for the flavor of the month like Lady Ga-Ga. It surely didn't take a genius to create those hairstyles...I could have done that... The only thing that you could have possibly be thinking by this decision was to push the other two further so they wouldn't play it "safe" going into the final. If Brig wins this, I won't be watching in the future...what's the point....the way the hair looks IS important...not the stylists personality! I could care less....

Come on Kim, her hairdo was not for the normal woman who goes into a salon to get her hair done! Brig should have been voted off along time ago.

Brig is the Wendy Pepper of Shear Genius. For some reason the judges keep her around. I think it is just to create conflict. But then, maybe the judges see something in her styles that most people just can not imagine. Even my daughter who has "plum" colored hair thinks Brigs styles are really out there.

Kim,

You must be kidding! The results for the final 3 is ridiculous. Brig has teetered on extinction throughout. She's no colorist: exhibit A is her own urine colored hair She's no cutter: misses the mark, time and again She's no stylist: doesn't do well with most textures She's not innovative: Using synthetic extentions looking like cotton candy masked the model's beautiful natural hair. When she did that before with the food challenge, she was ripped a new one. This time she created two versions of the Bride of Frankenstein. Both styles were UGLY!

Brig pulled it off !! She won because she deserved it. Her personality shows in her hairdos. She would be excellent for runway models and eccentric magazine articles. I also admire her because she always stood up for herself and ignored all the crap that was going on around her. I'm still blown away how she thought up her last hairdos. Think about it...would you have thought of that? Way to go Brig !!!!

Brig and I share alot in common. She's fun, lil' crazy, artistic, and she has her own planet. Which you need sometimes.

I absolutely loved Brig's hair styles. Why? Becuase she said she was going bold, and its not something you want to wear outside! It's Avant-garde! Though, part of me says yeah its kind of gross but I totally respect her kind of art in hair style which brings to me why I appreciate her so much. I nearly cried when Jon went home, and I was almost in tears when Brig won, becuase she definetly deserved it. I would much prefer Jenine or Mathew to go home. I dont like their arrogance.

A challenge about branding themselves - total freedom to do whatever they want. I saw three stylists create hair that I have seen so many times before and one stylist rock creativity & originality, not to mention amazing staging for photos. Would you see in on the street? Probably not. Would you see it in Vogue? Why yes, you would. Go Brig Go!

I have loved this show from the start, just as I love top chef. I underdstand the importance of the dramatic flair for these shows and Brigg fits the bill for that definately, but as some point in the show the dramatic should not upstage the talent. If this was branding yourself then Brigg just branded herself as something other than what the consumer and so her customers would in all reality purchase on a every day basis. Vidal Sassoon branded his style and that was a great cut but Brigg did not cut, color or style either of the models hair she used synthetic hair but only wove it in the hair of one model the other model's synthetic hair was just piled on her head, talk about a disconnect. Only the second hair style looked like anything close to what even a runway model would wear and that is definately not hair that the average person would buy and would be remotely brandable. I think that the judges or more so the producers really missed the mark on this episode. I can't begin to tell you how angry this episode made me, even Brigg knew she should have gone home if you listened to her monologues. I hope that the right thing is done in the finale or you have just lost another viewer.

Why did you ALL laugh when you first saw her work if she was so great?

[ if she was so great?

I agree with mr.nap above "Brig won because it makes for better TV to have two people who hate each other in the final episode. She should have been gone a long time ago" This show and its producers along with the experts have lost all forms of credibility with me. This is a farce and its just shows very bad judgment! Even on the "runway" Brigs styles would have been throw out in the gutter! Not only is Brig a very bad stylist, she can't color or cut! She is also DEAF and BLIND! The client comes first!

Go big or go home, and Brig deserved that win, because it showed that she can step outside the box and do dramatic haute couture. Personally the wonder twin thing is over rated, this is a competition and instead of playing besties, you need to see who your biggest competition is and take them out. Think about the final challenge, this isn't a best friend contest, its Shear Genius, and when I get my monthly Launch Pad, if I saw Brig's editorial from this week, it would definately catch my eye over the others and I would stop to read. Quite honestly the others were pedestrian in comparison.

Kim, All Brig did was to wrap a bunch of extensions on the models heads; the models natural hair was no where to be seen. One look at Brig and those styles and yes, they belong together, but, that is no way Shear Genius and you know it Kim. During Brig's photo shoot all the judges had looks of confusion and disappointment, later in the judging room it all changed, how interesting.....The outcome of that episode is appalling and total disrespect towards Janine and Mathew, and the beautiful work they did. Kim, Brig's hair was not hot, it was hideous, and yes, I agree, it was all her own. Brig can be all eccentric she wants to be, but this competition is about styling hair, and doing it beautifully. So far all I've seen from Brig is average; the last hair is something to keep in mind during Halloween.

Brig deserves to stay. Just becuase she has a different taste in hair styles doesnt mean she shouldnt be where she is now. Brig worked hard, and most challenges in my opinion Brig did a good job. All the hair styles we've seen in elemination challenges...We seen them before. Brig's? no, not at all. Brig's hair styles is refreshing to me. Bring's energy and passion by going hog wild in models hair gives me a non stop smile. I respect Brig thick and through.

If someone were to do my hair in any of the hair styles Brig showed off as 'her best' I would have had a nervous breakdown. Although she says she likes to do over the top, different styles, Brig will would be hard pressed to find customers who would let her near their hair. As far as the show, Shear Genius lost me as a viewer. I really believe it really isn't about finding awesome stylists, it's about drama. Brig is no "Shear Genius", more like a nightmare coming to life.

CANNOT BELIEVE JON WENT HOME!!! HE WAS THE BEST BY FAR. BRIG NEEDS TO GO HOMEEEE.

This last competition was about branding! I saw three stylists do hair that I have seen a million times before (actually I haven't seen Janine's afro look very much - Thank God! that was so bad) One stylist was innovative, original and creative - and the final photos were amazing. Would you see Brig's styles on the street? Probably not. Might you see them in Vogue? Why yes, yes you would. Keep rocking it Brig. Normal IS boring!

If I ever walked into a salon and saw someone doing hair like Brig does, I would run, not walk, to the nearest exit. If she wins this competition it will be the last time I watch the show. Her "talent" is not doing hair, it is irritating people with her insane ideas. Not enjoyable at all, folks, and I disagree that it is good tv.

IMO a stylist should have great hair...Always. Brig's hair is always a hot mess...The styles I've seen her do in the show have been a series of hot messes. I'd never allow that woman to touch my hair. I'm in the medical field and if Brig were the last stylist on the planet, I'd do my own hair!!! I agree with others, she should've been gone already.

The competition was about branding, if you have ever taken marketing 101, Brig did brand herself. And ultimately won because she did the challenge correctly. Like Jonathan said, was it great hair, not by society standards, but was it cohesive to her style, yes.

How long have the hairdresser been doing hair, the work has not been very good. How can so one who has been in hair for 30 years get on the show?

KIM,

With Brig's inclusion of the final three; change the show's title to Shear Madness. Her cotton candy crappy look was dissed in the food challenge. What made it more palatable this time?

Brig should have been long gone and she so did not deserve to be in the final 3. I had been looking forward to this season because I really enjoy the show, but after Brig's win this week I'm done watching for good - it's not worth my time to watch a show that would reward such a poor stylist with a top 3 placement when those more deserving were sent home. Will miss watching you, though, Kim. I always enjoyed your critiques.

I have seen only about 4 episodes of this year's Shear Genius. What they call styling, simply isn't. I can't watch it. I have yet to see Brig style someone's natural hair. She has used extensions and/or synthetic on everything I have seen her do. I am watching Brig's models walk the runway and what a disaster. She didn't style anything. It was all tape and fake. Is this what styling is? I hope not!!! If this represents "high fashion" as Kim said - fashion is out the window and spiraling down to the pits of hell. Of course, Matthew's were excellent. Janine's were my favorite. Classic yet unique, clean and uniform with just enough transition. My overall vote would go to Matthew. He has the capabilities, versatility and vision to work with all types of hair, especially real hair. I am disgusted that Brig won. And P L E A S E get rid of that god awful gold, yellow, hair. Extremely disappointed in the judge's decision and quite honestly, STUNNED.

Brig is so fake. How long did she practice that "look" she gave when she won. I didn't see any tears that she was trying to squeeze out.

I think this show is a waste of time and that's why no one watches it! The hairstyles are so boring, the stylists have no talents and the models are always white! Is a top hairstylist someone who could only do white hair? The show is not realistic and should have more talented, diverse and interesting themes. What a waste of my hour.

OMFG... You choose Brig to win Shear Genius? You judges need to go back to beauty school! She didn't style hair per-say, just put plastic caps on! I thought hair styles was the whole jist of this show, I guess not. It was whoever did the least that looked the crappiest! WTF, I'm never watching this show again if it comes back!

As usual, the judges got it WRONG. Brig hardly ever did hair, she unpacked hair! Tonight was unpacked hair and cellophane. If this had been BIZARRE GENIUS, then she should have won. If I walked into a salon, and saw her and her hair, I would walk out. This wjole season was a bust. Shame on you judges for NOT making it about the hairstyle, but the cartoon character.

Brigg is not a hairdresser. That was the worst hair I have ever seen. Are the judges blind. I will have to think twice before I watch this show again. A hair dresser for 40 years.

I am SHOCKED that Brig just won the competition!!! Are you kidding??? She hasn't done one decent hair style during the entire show. What she did for the run way show I could have whipped together in an hour. I thought the competition was about who was the best hair stylist. Brig never styled anyone's hair. Adding little accessories, whether it's hair extensions or not, does not make someone a good hair stylist. I wouldn't let her near my hair for all the tea in China!! However, I would let Janine or Matthew style my hair any day. They both have real talent, you know being in the top three almost EVERY week, and obviously now how to style hair, not just play with accessories. I'm so disappointed in the network and the judges on this one...you guys really missed the mark and awarded someone who didn't do the work required to truly win.

I will not be watching this show any longer. Brig did nothing but tape colored hair to the girls hair. This was not a hairdresser. She would never touch my hair. she was really good in any of the competition

Anyone could have done that hair with the help of the other stylist - because it was not doing hair -get her a laminating machine and call her a hairstylist , give us a break - Lost alot of respect for the show. I will be sure to avoid it next season! Calling all laminators sign up for the show we will give you a chance to.

Are you kidding me?????? This has to be the worst ending EVER!!! With most of Brigs styles she had to add false hair to the models head. Not very often would she enhance the real hair of her models leaving me to believe that she only knows how to accessorize and not do hair.... I have to say I am very disappointed with the decision of the judges and I am not looking forward to the next season of Shear Genius.

Hell naw!!...Brig did not just win this competition, I'm a hairstylist and I"m so upset over that crap she called hairstyling. Bravo is going 2 get the business. This will be my last time watching Shear Genius until they get it together. by the way, why isn't the panel of judges and host(s)stylist, those who know the hair industry. this is wut you get when u try to put ppl who know nothing about our craft as judges, they put out mess like Brig...b4 it was about styling great, polished, edgy, creative hair. How can u put Brig in the same category as Tabatha and Anthony!! I'm just outdone...

Brig should not have won!!! All she did was put accesories in the models hair! She didn't do anything with their actual hair. She did that with other episodes too and it's crap because the other stylists actually used their models hair. I used to love this show but after seeing this season I was so disappointed that I might not watch anymore if it comes back for another season. There was no reason that Brig should have won and no one can make me understand why she won because she should have went home a long time ago!

I understand all about the drama factor to keep viewers, but there is NO WAY Brig should have been in the top 3, let alone the winner of Shear Genius. She knows nothing about pleasing a client, nor actually creating a hairstyle a real person would wear. She should have been eliminated weeks ago. I loved watching Shear Genius to see what the current hot hairstyles are and how they were executed. I have no interest in seeing freakish weird hair art that one would only want if they were going to a Halloween party. Shame on you for wasting my time. I think I will skip watching future episodes.

I love this season of Shear Genius! Best one yet! I love that Brig won. She stands out from everyone else. I think Matthew and Jeannine were so mean! Ugh! Like you said, nobody puts Baby in the corner! I hope to see you in future seasons of Shear Genius!

I really like Brig!!! I thought she was a pain at times, but it's a straight fact--EVERYONE had their annoying moment. That said, 60% of the time, her hair sucked. And I'm sorry, I thought the show was about hair, not tricks. She does not make people look good. You're never admiring the shine or the style. The winner should have range and versatility. She is good at crazy--that's IT!!! I feel a bit cheated that she won. I watched this whole season, just for the judges to cop out at the end. Jonathan was spot on in his assessment. Where was his big mouth when we needed it? How about we call the show 'Best Prop' next season, and I'll fly my little sister out?

How could Brigg win! She is horrible. I lost my respect for Bravo tv. Matthew showed more variety and creativity in the time allotted then Brigg.

futureristic???? You're gonna think sticky objects on hair is a hair do and that's the future too- hahah.

Her hair styles screamed BRIG...that was not a good thing...Something to be avoided at all cost! You dropped the ball here. Two other stylists could have done so much better

Brig branded herself...yes, as the brand you don't want to wear or advertise, so of course branding and marketing yourself is all good, but you want effective branding and marketing and she did not do a good job of that. So go ahead and boost yourselves and Brig up if you want, but ya'll know dang on well, that the material she put out was not of good quality and we know what type of brands are made of poor quality! A cow gets branded, that doesn't mean it produces the best dairy products, so take that mess to somebody who wants to hear it, bcuz it's not working over here...not on a hairstylist like me. Next!!!

You must be kidding. Brig won. I agree with Johnathon that all she did was take some hair extentions, colored them and stuck them on some scotch tape and then put them on the models heads. What did that have to do with "styling" hair? Just like I swore I'd never watch AI again because I thought it was rigged (and I haven't), I now swear the same thing about Shear Genuis. You now have at least 1 less viewer (and probably more). Bravo, you screwed up.

Brig is the worst hairdresser I've ever seen and this is one of the best seasons that I have seen but unfortunately you guys got it wrong

This will be the last time I watch Shear Genius. Sorry Kim, but the results were silly, stupid and ultimately disappointing. Apparently all you have to do to win $100,000+ is stick plastic all over someone's head. Ugh!

Just watched the final episode. Brig never did anything with hair, and didn't deserve to win. I will never watch this show again!!!
