Domestic travelers, regional loyalists, fans of Americana, and bragging-rights enthusiasts of the world — this is for you.
Travel + Leisure is out again with its annual World's Best Awards, culled from reader input. The wide-ranging results supply a wealth of fodder for friendly competition, wanderlust, and sophisticated cocktail-party banter everywhere. (For instance, did you know that three of the top 10 three islands in the world are in the U.S.... and the one closest to the top of the list is not in Hawaii?)
Well, once again the survey asked respondent to rank American cities on factors like access to art, culture, shopping, landmarks, music, and regional cuisine. Overall, the American south won the day — eight out of the top 15 cities this year are located in the region! Think such places as San Antonio (No. 10), Asheville (No. 9), Austin (No. 8), Nashville (No. 5), New Orleans (No. 4), Savannah (No. 3).
Charleston has held the honor as the American city at the very top of the pack since 2013 — but was it able to hold the No. 1 spot again this year? Drumroll please...
Yes, indeed. (Ding ding ding!) In this year's survey, Charleston once again held onto its title as the best city in America.
Folks love the city's historic cobblestone-clad core, stunning 18th- and 19th-century homes, and of course, incredible restaurants and bars.
