Exit Strategy

"Robert was barking orders but not helping solve problems and Margie couldn't manage her way out of a paper bag."

January 5, 2010

When I watched Tantrum salon it was clear that Jody felt disconnected from her team and her business -- Robert was barking orders but not helping solve problems and Margie couldn't manage her way out of a paper bag. The communication between Robert and Jody had totally broken down and it was one of the main problems in their business. Robert was feeling abandoned and was running around like a chicken with his head cut off and Jody felt trapped and the whole staff suffered because of the disconnect in leadership.

I found out that the staff really supported the owners and were good stylists but they didn't know who to turn to for leadership, and most of the staff felt that Margie was only in the salon because she was Roberts sister not because she did a good job in her position, and that Jody had lost her passion for the salon and I needed to get to the bottom of it. When I spoke to the owners, Robert blamed Jody for the salon's problems as he felt he was doing it all alone. Jody felt torn between her family and her business. I was proud of Jody when she made the decision to step down as owner. It was a very hard but I believe the right decision for her and I could see the weight that was lifted off her shoulders when she acknowledged the fact that she didn't want that pressure anymore and wanted to devote time to her Kids.

This post couldnt be more on the level.

Terrific piece of writing!

Tabatha, love the show.just wanted too know how in the world did that manager margie at tantrum salon in covina get away with her lack of skills, and still be employed when all she did was eat behind the desk and talk back too her staff.

Tabatha - you rock! I loved watching you on Shears and was thrilled you started your own show. What a fabulous mix of talent, and yeah, you've got the recipe down pat. It really is the best use of time to train, discuss with owners and staff what needs to happen pronto. Nevermind what a fabulous crew works with you on the restyling of the salons. They must work diligently? And certainly bring magic to the show.
Wouldn't change a thing. You carry and execute it all so well.

Keep 'em comin'.
p.s. Where is your salon and how does one go about making an appointment with you? The waiting time is a nonissue for me.

Tabatha
I love your show at this day in time. Its shows like yours that gives inspiration to those who are in businesses that are having problems. They too can turn it around. I look forward to seeing shows like yours. I already know that this country is hurting. I'm not shut in yet. I hear the woes of people everyday. I was looking for your show and see that there is another show that they might have replaced your show with. The show was depressing. Please Bravo give Tabatha a set time. I'm tired of hunting for Tabatha. Why do t.v. station fix things when they are not broke. If you have to take your show to another channel, so be it. Many will follow you.

I started watching Tabatha's show and really love it. I would like to see more of her and think she should use her talents in other fields and think she would be great.

Hi I dont know if anyone can help me but I live in northern san diego. I have curly hair and have been to three different stylist and I left hating all three hair cuts. I really need to find someone that knows how to cut curly hair and good colorist. Please help my daughter and I find a good stylist.

I just have to say I wish Tabitha could come and take over my salon!! Sadly I work in a small, corporately owned salon and I dream of big changes like Tabitha makes in most of these salons. It is sad to see most of the stylists in our industry are no longer in it for the love and passion. They are not in it to work as a team meber, and they cannot listen to a boss. It is amazing, I watch these episodes and see a lot of my own stylists (or at least their faults). I just wish we could get the help. Sad really...

Tabatha Rocks! I just started watching this show 2 days ago, and have now seen most of the episodes! Still watching it right now as we speak.
Don't work in the Hair Salon business, but feel like this show has changed me & my attitude towards my current work environment, and that no one is perfect, people can change when given a huge wake up call!
Thanks Tabatha for your toughness & awareness & smartness. Hope this show continues!

It never surprises me how many salons are out there that lead this industy to the ground. We strive for respect in our careers and it is so frustrating to have stylists treat my/our professionas a 'hang-out' at work kind of jobs and not one worthy of taken seriously.

It would be nice next season to include some nails into your critiques. I'd love to get a swift kick in the ass if I'm doing something wrong and not aware if it.

I love this show.Tabatha you are my new role model and hero. You are beautiful and talented and generous. Thank you for showing everyone how to take responsibility for their own lives, in a caring and intelligent manner. I am a teacher and I find situations on your show translate into my everyday experiences. I love your fearlessness!

I think that bravo did the best thing ever by bringing tabatha on with her show, if i was working in a shop id love to work in her's .i think tabatha is great , she really has the midas touch and i think she does a wonderful job i just feel sorry she has to put up with some of the ding dong's that she does, i wish her nothing but the best i would kill to sit in on of her classes , when your good your good , and tabatha your good , thank you for doing what you do , keep up the great work ill keep watching .
your the best !

Hey Tabatha, I love your show! I'm Hoping there is a season 3 looking forward to More ! I love how you do not bite your tongue. Keep up the great job!

I have to say most the salons I have worked in need Tab, probly one of the reasons I dont work in a salon anymore is that I worked with almost every type of person that she deals with and I lost my passion for hair. I enjoy it as recreational now, now I sit back and relate to what she does and I praise her. Tabatha keep up the tough job and the great work!

Tabitha- I would like to commend you on being a powerful woman who is not afraid to tell it how it is. I only wish I was allowed to use your style of communication with the people who work for me! Your no nonsense approach and expectations of employees should be emulated by all!

Tabatha- Your show is brilliant. I have worked in the salon industry for several years now - as a nail tech. While I understand that you are the Hair Goddess- you never tackle ALL of a true full- service salon. Its an integral part of a salon, that can bring in revenue as well as new clients.. I would love to see you include the nail tech (if one) into the show and and her manicures and pedicures and station and client relations should be critiqued as well...I would love some feedback on your thoughts about this..

Tabatha!!!

first off i have to say i love your show its amazing the things i and alot of us learn from you. i also would love for you to come to my school B street Design and do a show i think you could teach us some amazing things and help us stuent start our careers in this industy... also it would be nice to give our insructors and some of our students a wake up call on there atitudes

i love you tabatha please come to manhattan ks it would make my life hehehe!

YOUR SHOW IS TOTALLY AWESOME! I REALLY HOPE THERE ARE MORE SHOWS TO COME! EVERYONE NEEDS THEIR Tabatha FIX !!!!

I love the show and I'm sorry to see the season end! I have one question......who pays for the renovation of the new salon we see at the end each the show?

Thanks,
GC

I just discovered the Show about a week ago and It has become my FAVORITE Show on the Tube :~) LOVE IT!!!

i am a 12 year old boy and my mom owns a hair shop with 50 workers. its kind of annoying because shes always crying, stressing out, texting with her work because she has so much stress, my brothers and sisters are 8,7,25 and the 25 year old brother gets really annoying and he is my moms main reason of stress him and his girlfriend met at a las vegas at a a hair showor symposiam, but i dont really know what that means?...but they have been breaking up on and off fighting my brother has a 1 year old child named braylon, my nephew...he is so much fun to play with, i saw my mom watching you shows so i decided to write this for her so that you could come to her hair salon and help her like you help the other hair salon's!!

I so love this show! Tabatha is my hero and I wish there were a way for her to pay a visit to some of our so-called salons in my small town. Tabatha would be horrified. HELP!

hello, i love your show i just started watching your show about 2 months ago and i think you are amazing person our professional, stricked, and most of all caring. When i'm watching your show sometimes it makes me cry, you remind me of a teacher i had in college. she was stricked, but she also cared about your work and your future and this is what you do. i applaud you so much for what you do. Good luck with the future of your show im sure it will be around for a long time.

Love this show! Want MORE! Give Tabatha a longer time slot so we can view more details of each salon make over!!!

Tabatha, I watch your show and my plams sweat, I'm so nevous that I'm that owner who has let her salon go down the drain. Four years ago I had a thriving bussiness, full staff, making money. Then my husband was striken with cancer and after a long battel passed away last year. In the mist of all we went threw my bussiness suffered greatly. Now I have empty stations and barly making ends meet. I"m lost, any suggestions would be appreciated

I love Tabatha and want to see another season! Outside of being entertaining it is informative to both clients and hairdressers. My salon owner makes it mandatory watching for his staff and as a client I have been educated on what to expect for service! Great show!! Bring it back!

Hello! Love your show!
you rock it everytime!

I know that what makes good TV and good education are two different animals, but in the next season is there any way you can really point out how many avail appts. are booked, before and after. Also, upsells, retail, and rebooking on a now and later basis? It seems some of the salon owners want to get you to remodel and get the hell out. Also living in Iowa, I know what the laws are here, (ie. a salon manager MUST be a licensed cosmotologist) and how much education is needed before state boards. (2100hrs) I'd like to see basic requirements for the state you are located in gone through a bit. I know that being licensed by the state board of health if we were seen drinking (or it was implied) on the job, we would lose our means for an income. Obviously not in FL I guess.
Just wondering.

Hi, Tabatha. I am addicted to your show! My favorite parts are when you see the stylists skills in the beginning and then at the end. I also love the "break through" moments when you say something to the owner that makes their light bulb finally go on. I have been a teacher for 10 years and watching your show has brought me back to my childhood dreams of doing hair and make-up for people. I'm looking into cosmetology programs in my area of eastern shore, Maryland. It's about time I made my dreams come true! Thank you for being an inspiration!

Love, love, love your show! oh how I wish you would consider our salon for a Takeover! The owner of our salon watches your show and changes the rules every week according to what he has seen. He is narcissistic, loud, self-absorbed, not very good at hair and over-all obnoxious. He has recently opened a Cosmetology school next to our salon and thinks he is going to have students learn hair "his" way. I have seen his way and been appalled! Hopefully these students can pass the State Boards! He is very good though at putting down his staff and criticizing our work. I have been embarrassed many times by his coming over and trying to correct me with no tack at all in front of my client. It really pissed him off when I went to NY to the Redken Exchange to take a test and passed to become a certified colorist. There is so much more and not nearly enough space or time to tell it all. Please consider helping us!!!

Tabatha HELP! If you need an EXCUSE to visit VEGAS - This salon near the Las Vegas Strip, is it! The owner is just 25, she is extremely hard working and tireless, but is struggling. Even more amazing is she has lived in the US a short 3 years, yet given her age and experience, has done better than previous owners of the salon, but to succeed she really needs help! The salon has the usual Vegas characters and drama, but the proximity to the Strip draws the majority of customers from conventioneers and vacationers which make for an entertaining atmosphere that is bursting with opportunities to succeed. This salon is in need of the professional direction and remodeling only a stern professional like you can provide.

Tabatha: Do you really think Robert will be financially fair to Jody? Or...has he put together a plan that you know of to do that since you finished the project. I didn't get a sense that he would be doing that any time soon.

My wife teases me because I LOVE your show. Not merely because you take absolutely ZERO crap from anyone but I love the business tips and information you share. Also, I can confidently say that I have a greater appreciation for the hair care industry after watching your show. AWESOME!!

Tabitha,

You are fabulous! I love your no-nonsense, get it done, attitude. You talk a whole lot of smack, but you definitely back it up.

PS - You are sooo my girl crush!

S.

Love the show! Cant understand one thing - why, since the owners call you for help, are they so resistant to you when you give them amazing help and reorganization?

Loved the show! I'm looking forward to next week's. I'm also looking forward to hearing Bravo has season 3 planned. Bravo????? Thanks Tabatha for some entertaining tv!

You are so incredible and your no nonsense attitude makes this one of my favorite shows! You are the Simon Cowell of the hair world! You tell it like it with no sugar coating and severely honest but seem genuine and nice on the below the surface. You know what needs to be done and you have the balls to do it! Love you so much and I can't wait for the finale and Season 3!! xoxo

Wow! I just watched your show and it was great. The true hurts, but it's really so true to your actions. I would love for you to come and visit my shop . I have been salon owner for almost 20 years. And I could really need your help I love my job behind the chair, but managing the salon SUCKS!I hired managers and they robbed me blind,so now I try to do it myself. I really need some help with employees. I know I'm to easy on them, and I let them walk all over me. But I really don't know what to do at this time . Could you help me? Thank you unhappy owner .

This hard core woman is so passionate about this industry. It is amazing to actualy meet Tabatha and realize she is only being tough to inspire those around her. WOW how does one take it? I'll tell you. She is making people great one head of hair at a time.... Just like us that still love what we do. Thank you for the insperation, and remember that if you love this industry it is always playtime not work.

Tabatha hello! if you ever do a show on the east coast then I would appreciate it if you would consider my wife's salon its called Caprizzo hair salon in Tewksbury mass. Shes been a stylist for quite some time when the owners offered to sell the salon to her, she is a very hard working and devoted to perfection kind of person the salon went from twelve stylists two receptionists and a spa person to just two (her and another) stylists the receptionist and spa person forcing her to locate to a smaller salon. The salon is still struggling in getting the added stylists needed and financial troubles. She achieved her dreams in business ownership and is a fighter all the way, shes a super stylists doing local T.V personalities and clients even from California & new jersey clients when in the area. Shes highly recommended and her customers wont allow anyone but her to do their hair was voted best salon in the area What I was wondering was any insight you can give her and the staff to improve the salon in any way possible getting it to the way it once was. Thank you my wife (Ondina -Dina for short, is going to kill me). But never the less thanks A proud husband Phil Puzzo.

Dear Tabatha,
I love your show!!! Nicky (The Salon owner in Miami) was insufferable and I also felt like punching her also! The truth is that Nicky by nature is a negative person in her own life, she hates herself, and she needs counseling. She will never be able to own any type of business anywhere with the negative attitude she has. She doesn’t realize that her negativity is poison for herself first and foremost and then she spreads the venom among her staff! She is totally delusional! It is everyone else’s fault not her own!
That is not how she should be treating your employees! She should treat them as friends and family because they are making her money! They are the once that make her successful and she doesn’t get that! I do not work in a salon however I have worked in the cosmetic industry very similar and have had a similar type of manager. When her staff would see her walk on the floor they would all hide from her! She would make everyone feel like failures! Well how in the world could they succeed then? Tyrant managers or business owners do not get that the success of the business really depends on their attitude!
I did end up quitting the job, however not before I pointed out my manager’s mistakes. I explained to her that the way she treats her staff is totally wrong. I addressed that she should uplift the girls, make them feel special, important, show them when a job is well done, care about them, show compassion and positivity because her success is based on theirs, and if she will be positive with them, they will want to work harder, and better for her and for themselves. Her answer to me was in a form of a question: “Who encourages, and shows me compassion!?” At that point I realized that she would never change and all the advice I gave her was all for nothing, it just went in one ear and out the other! I feel bad for her really I do, because she will never be any better as a manager and she will always treat her staff with a negative attitude! I was off to a bigger and better adventure due to my positive attitude. For her that would be the end of the road, she would never go any further in her career, she would be the same and nothing ever changed.
I learned how to be a manager from my first business manager who praised me to the department manager, and the reps and everyone and anyone she could find! She always encouraged me, always helped me be the best I could be, and in return I was receptive, attentive, and loved her so much I worked so hard for her and for me, and in eight months I was promoted to business manager to head out the opening of a new store! This is how I started in the cosmetic industry and working in this type of customer service atmosphere, and the negative boss above, was the last experience I had in that type of environment! Making someone beautiful is a talent and a gift and it should be cared for and nurtured in a positive atmosphere!
Continued success Dear Tabatha!

Love your show Tabatha. Iam thinking of starting classes to become a hair stylist. Thanks to you

Tabitha, I love your show! One thing though...you should of told "Nikki the European" to close her doors. Her attitude disgusted me. You had a positive effect on the staff and hopefully they can take that with them when they all leave her to rot in misery.

Tabatha I love your show! You have a no nonsence attitude and it's awesome! I'm depressed the season finale is already coming up haha. Keep up the great work!

Tabatha,

I LOVE your Show... i wash u can cut my hair... my hair is long.. i use to go to a salon but i don't any more.. there was one female that used to do my hair she was good. and i went back one day she was gone. so a other person done it i did not like it.. i was unhappy with it.. i wish you can cut my hair.. talk to you later.. and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! bye!!

I love the show.Like what many people said if is hard to find a great hair stylist.I would love for Tabatha to do my hair. that way I know my hair will be done right. The last time that I had a great hair stylist was when I lived in Spain. She was great and beleive it or not the spainish stylist listen to what you want done. I wanted to bring mine back here to the states. The six years while I was over there is was great.

Just wanted to simply say that you got it going on. You have empowered me to put a fire under the employees booties. Thank you.

I just wanted to say I did not understand what my boyfriend would talk about untill I started to watch your show but now I know what he talks about all the time. He is the artist drictor of a slaon in Fort Worth Texas. He has been telling me that he would like to find ways to keep clints coming back to the slaon but everything he has tried it is not working can you please help him with this matter?
By the way you are one hell of a great diva we love you very much.

Hey Tabatha... love the show never miss it... sometimes I will watch a repeat... funny I can hear you saying (get a life) but you rock and I like it when you are hard on people don't like a lot of the lovely dovey crap... I can watch disney for all happy endings. Are you planning a show at the end of each season that revisits those oyu helped to see what became of them... Hope Bravo keeps oyu around forever... !!!
