Let's Pretend We Have Singles' Day & Do Some Shopping for Ourselves, Shall We?

We don't have Singles' Day here, but if we did, this is exactly what's on our list.

By Courtney Thompson

Today overseas megalithic Chinese online retailer Alibaba (the Amazon of China, if you will) is hosting its Singles’ Day online “festival” that dwarfs Black Friday sales by many, many billions. The retailer chalked up $14 billion last year to be exact, and as of mid-day today, they’ve already surpassed that number. Crazytown.

What is the purpose of this online shopping bonanza, you ask? Singles’ Days came about in China in the 1990s as an antithesis to Valentine’s Day. For those who didn’t have a mate to share chocolates and wine and lingerie with, Singles’ Day was an opportunity to shower oneself with gifts instead.

Now that’s an idea I can get on board with. The holidays are fast approaching and I’ve already begun mentally compiling a list of everyone I need to shop for—kids, husband, in-laws, school teachers, mail man. The list goes on and on. But what about little ol’ me? I’ve got a wish list a mile long, and I’d be more than happy to start checking some items off.

So if Singles’ Day were a thing here in the U.S., this is exactly what I’d buy, and I’m guessing you’re going to want one of each for yourself, too.

1. Blowdryer

Let me be clear, this isn’t just any blow dryer, this is a Dyson. Comprised of digital motor V9, the Dyson dries your hair lickety split and increases shine without causing damage. It’s not too good to be true, which is why the price is so steep.

Dyson Blowdryer, $399

2. Cherry Bomb Balm

I’ve said it before, I’m a lip balm girl. And this one is the perfect hue of red for the holidays. Dab it on while you shop til you drop, adding a dash of glam to your everyday look.

Tatcha Lip Balm, $38

3. Soft-as-Butter PJs

Everyone deserves a luxurious pair of jammies to slip into at the end of a long day, and these from Roberta Roller Rabbit do not disappoint. Soft and slinky as can be, the tunic and pants wash well and come in slew of adorable patterns.

Roberta Roller Rabbit Loungewear Jersey Hearts, $95

4. Pink Wireless Headphones

We’ve told you before, wireless headphones are the way of the future. But wireless headphones that come in a girly rose gold? Yes, please.

Beats by Dre, $299

5. Pretty Palettes

There are few things in life that make me gasp with glee quite like opening a new eye shadow palette. Perfect for the holidays, makeup guru Bobbi Brown recently released these compacts, which each mix rich winter-y colors in shimmers and mattes, plus darker shadows for lining your eyes. Making them even more luxe is the leather and gold packaging.

Bobbi Brown Wine & Chocolate Eye Palettes, $60 each

6. Luxe Initial Necklace

Pretty much every jewelry company out there make’s initials charms, but my favorite are from designer-to-the-stars Jennifer Meyer. If you see a new celebrity mom sporting her new baby's initial, you can bet Meyer’s the designer…which is why we all need one, too.

Jennifer Meyer Initials, $1,800

7. Humongous Sunglasses

Some days you want to put on an enormous pair of sunglasses and ignore everyone around. These are perfect for doing just that.

Karen Walker Number One Glasses, $250

8. A Musky Fragrance

Sweet, airy scents are for springtime. Chilly nights and fireside chats call for sexy fragrances, and this one by Bond No. 9 fits the bill.

Bond No. 9 New York Scent of Peace, $230

9. A Blending Brush

If you’re not a professional makeup artist, blending your products can be a daunting task. This brush solves that problem for you by expertly mixing your bronze with your blush, and it's adorable shape fights right into your little hand.

Artis Palm Brush, $65

10. An Old School Sneaker

Stilettos are great and all, but mama needs a comfy sneak for daytime. I’m loving the retro feel of these Vans, they add just the right amout of edge and cool factor to school drop off, grocery shopping or your commute into work.

Vans Canvas Old Skool, $55
