Evelyn Cohen is known for her unintentionally hilarious commentary on son Andy’s Watch What Happens Live! antics via her segment How’s It Goin’ with Evelyn Cohen. She took to the WWHLYouTube channel this morning with a moving, sincere message this morning to share her experience when Andy came out of the closet—just in time for National Coming Out Day.
Evelyn reveals her initial shock after Andy came out and shares the "sage" perspective that a friend had given to her upon hearing the news. "I said, 'What am I gonna do? Andy’s gay!' And she said, ‘What do you mean, what are you gonna do? He was gay yesterday and he’s the same person today. You just know a little bit more about him.'"
Evelyn goes on to describe how she educated herself about the LGBT community through volunteering at an AIDS organization. "If I was going to tell a mother today how to react to the knowledge that your son is gay, I would say, ‘Mourn your loss—your loss of expectations that you had for your child, or the way you looked at him. And if you have prejudices, and if the prejudice is out there, you need to confront it, because the only way to learn about prejudice is by learning more about."
“When I look back [on] 24 years, things have really gotten better,” she concludes. “I feel grateful that my relationship with my song is very good, and he helped me through it, and I helped him through it, and I feel good about that.”
