Fashion Queens stars Derek J and Miss Lawrence know what’s hot (and what’s not) on the red carpet—but they’re also pros when it comes to hair. And the two have got you covered for keeping your locks looking fresh and chic with summer approaching. The pair have shared their seasonal tips with The Gloss.
"Mermaid waves"—as sported by Blake Lively, Jessica Chastain, Lady Gaga (in her own, extreme way) and more—are one of their favorite looks this season. The stress-free 'do can be achieved by taking a jumbo curling iron to your hair and just wrapping strands around it until the waves take hold, and then following it up with a thorough tousle. Braiding hair today and loosening it up tomorrow will result in the same soft waves, too. Lawrence and Derek love how their fave Bravolebs have rocked this look—namely Joyce Giraud de Ohoven, Kenya Moore and Lilly Ghalichi—and we can see why they'd namecheck these particular ladies for their long, luxurious tresses. For the summertime, these waves can be pulled up into a stylish ponytail, according to Lawrence, as long as you're tying it up with something cute and no ordinary scrunchie!
As for beating humidity, the two say that dry shampoo and dirty curls (huh?!) are saviors for looking fly when the heat is on. Derek's a big fan of embracing natural curls, as they add volume, break up shine and keep hair from looking greasy, even if you're sweating your face off. With summer comes a ton of social engagements, so dry shampoo couldn't be better for sprucing up your hair when you're on the go.
They're all about summertime bobs, too: it's a chic solution that keeps your hair off your neck in the hot summer months. Kandi Burruss has sported one in Real Housewives of Atlanta seasons past--and NeNe Leakes is growing hers out now. But Lawrence and Derek are looking to the red carpet to see what Lupita Nyong'o, Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron are all about. Add choppy layers to funk it up, keep it streamlined and slick it down or embrace some curls and messy styling: there's no wrong way to wear it, and the versatile cut is a fave amongst celebs this season for a reason.
But they’ve got one seasonal hair tip that might be a bit unconventional when it comes to bobs and other brave looks: wigs! If you're too scared to chop your hair off and try a real bob on for size, Lawrence is a huge fan of giving faux hair a spin. It's a low-commitment way to try the trends you love without going mad with the scissors.
