Exact Replica of Titanic to Set Sail in 2018

Inauspicious, perhaps, but actually happening.

For those of you who love the movie Titanic or lore surrounding the historical ship, you’ll be pleased to know that a replica of the infamous vessel is under construction and set to sail in 2018. Inauspicious, or romantic? You make the call.

The company behind the endeavor is Blue Star Line, which is owned by Clive Palmer, an Australian billionaire. The design plans mimic those of the original Titanic to a chilling degree — from the café dining chairs and first-class bedroom color palette to old-timey elevators and the Edwardian-era-inspired gym.

Dubbed Titanic II, this ship isn’t just a billionaire’s private pet project. This sequel Titanic will operate commercially, with its maiden voyage penciled in for a trip from Jiangsu, China to Dubai at some point in 2018. With increased safety standards — like enough lifeboats and a welded hull — and modern amenities like air conditioning, the replica will make for a cozier and less risky ride than the original.

The plans include room for 840 cabins, 900 crew members, and 2,400 total passengers. Ticket prices haven’t yet been declared, but people have apparently offered as much as $1 million for a place on board. Taking this ride would truly make for an unforgettable experience, one that would transport passengers back to the 1912 ship at every turn.

So it seems, we will literally never let go, Jack.
