How to Start 2016 Off Right (Hint: Don't Run Out and Join a Gym)

Priv's beauty and wellness experts offer advice on how to make sure the new year is your best yet.

By Jocelyn Vena

It's a new year — so that means it's time to kick your old beauty and fitness habits to the curb. And if you're wondering what resolutions you should be making — and, yes, keeping — in 2016, we've got your back.

The Daily Dish spoke to several beauty and wellness experts to get their take on the good habits you should be adding to your routine.

Be You

When it comes to your mane, Michael Braun, a hairstylist on the PRIV app, notes that "I think across the board, less is always more. And that's a really good way to put it." He says that instead of frying your hair, go natural. "Embrace your natural texture, embrace your natural color," Michael explains. "Play off of that more rather than doing drastic changes. You don't need to be everything — hair, makeup, nails, everything — you can just pick your one thing that you are for that one night and do that."

Stay Hydrated (And Not in the Way You Might Think)

A clean look is also a good idea to adopt when it comes to your nails. "A lot of clients are going towards just having healthy, natural cuticles and making sure they're hydrated," Carol J. Castillo, a nail technician on the PRIV app, said. "The transition is more clients going towards natural and finding a way to making their manicure last longer. What I recommend all my clients do is hydrate all their cuticles because that's where the health of you nail begins. It's like your scalp: if your'e scalp's healthy, your hair's healthy — same for the nails. A natural way to do it is you can actually put olive oil or coconut oil [on your cuticles]."

Embrace Your Inner Beauty

Turns out the best way to always look your best, is to start from within. "I think so much of it in terms of beauty really falls suit to diet," said PRIV makeup artist Brian Dean. "So everyone's always talking about wanting to improve their diet, or quit smoking, or drink more water. I think all of those things make a great case for better skin. And the other thing to is, it makes you feel better and when you feel better you actually look better. When you feel better inside, you look better. So the two definitely go hand in hand."

Skip the Gym

In the New Year, you might want to shake up how you break a sweat. Instead of joining a gym and dealing with strangers seeing you fall off the elliptical, have a fitness guru come to you. From boxing to yoga, PRIV offers a number of ways to get into shape — all of which you can do in the comfort of your home (or wherever you prefer to sweat off all those holiday treats).

Embrace Change

Change can be scary, but also good. "It's good to evaluate your style and see what changes you can make as far as health [and] eating-wise," Hubert Guy, the lead barber/male groomer for PRIV, said. "If it's your appearance, hairstyle, the way you dress, you got to make a conscious effort to want to make that change happen. Eating healthy and drinking healthy, that only helps your body."
