Back in the '90s, there was almost no catchphrase as iconic as "have mercy," the famous line uttered by Uncle Jesse Katsopolis on Full House.
And you better have mercy, because we finally know what prompted John Stamos to even start saying those now famous two words. Basically, we have director/producer/John's self-proclaimed “showbiz godfather" Garry Marshall to thank. But, we'll let John explain.
“He always said, ‘Get a catchphrase, you need a catchphrase.’ I’m not kidding you. The ‘have mercy’ thing came out of, ‘Oh sh**, Garry told me I had to have a catchphrase,'" he told Entertainment Weekly. And, John's decision to embrace "have mercy" with open arms was praised by the godfather himself. Garry added, “It takes a minute [for audiences to catch on]. [John] was brave enough to do it.”
John recently resurrected his role of Uncle Jesse on Netflix's revival of the classic TGIF sitcom on the reboot, Fuller House. He stopped by Watch What Happens Live last October to open up about his experience on the show, and explain how he had some issues with baby Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen back in the day. "I did try to get them fired when they were kids, but they were kids," he explained. "They were [crying too much at the time], but I’m glad they did the show."
While on WWHL John also made sure he slipped in a game of Plead the Fifth. Check it out, below.
