Kim Kardashian Does Damage Control After Kanye West's Latest Controversial Comments

Kanye West has never been shy about expressing his opinion. But he never said his latest controversial comments, according to wife Kim Kardashian.

West grabbed headlines earlier this week after clips of his Sunday Service circulated in which he spoke about how quickly the public can turn on artists, citing Michael Jackson as an example. "They want art from the artist. But, anytime they do anything erratic, they just gonna pull up the full documentaries on him," he said during the service, as reported by TMZ.

Many interpreted West's comments as a defense of R. Kelly in the wake of the allegations of sexual misconduct against him featured in the new documentary Surviving R. Kelly. Kardashian clarified West's comments during Monday night's Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen After Show, saying that he wasn't referring to R. Kelly at all. "He didn't even say R. Kelly's name. He didn't even, he was referencing himself and used an analogy about Michael Jackson because they were playing a Michael Jackson song next in the service we were at. And so he didn't even mention that. He wasn't even thinking that," she explained. "And so people were jumping to so many conclusions and try to put him just in a whole other mind state. He was like, 'That wasn't even what I was thinking.'"

Kardashian also came to her husband's defense on Twitter earlier that day. "I’m going to nip this in the bud right now. Kanye was speaking about his own experience of everyone quick to say they are cancelling him because of differences in opinion [and] not being perfect. The analogies were in context to his own experiences, not defending anyone else," she tweeted. "I want to make it very clear, he is not condoning anyone’s actions or unacceptable disgusting behavior. My husband’s words are being taken out of context due to timing."

TMZ later released an extended version of West's comments at his Sunday Service that confirmed that he never mentioned R. Kelly's name. "Our sources say Kanye's quote about documentaries was nothing but bad timing," according to TMZ.

West has been known to be particularly unfiltered on Twitter, and Kardashian explained that it serves as an outlet for the rapper to express himself. "He goes through phases. He made a good point the other day. He was like, 'Look, some people express themselves, if it's about a person, like in diss records.' And he's like, 'I've never done that,'" she said during the WWHL After Show. "He's like, 'To me, Twitter is my therapy, and it's legal. So I'm not doing anything to hurt anyone. I'm not being, maybe irrational, but not being irrational and doing something physical because I'm upset or frustrated with someone. People can end up in jail for maybe the things that I'm thinking, but instead I just tweet it all. It might be 150 tweets, but it's how I get it out and I feel better, and then I'm over it for a while.'"

Kardashian admitted that she has told West to give Twitter a break in the past, but he doesn't always take her advice. "He'll always do what he wants to do, but he'll know my opinion, and I'm there," she shared. "He'll listen sometimes, and sometimes if he really has to get it out, I support that, too."
