Kathy Griffin's Key to Success? 'There's No BS'

The comedienne talks supporting gay rights and her rise to fame in candid interview.

By Mike Hess

Just on the heels of what might be the biggest assemblage of female funny firepower as Kathy Griffin, Chelsea Handler and Whitney Cummings are all set to hit the Kathy stage, Miss Griffin's getting real about the landscape of women in comedy.

In a candid interview with Metro Weekly, Kathy unloads about how male-dominated the comedy world is, claiming that she "was raised in the Margaret Cho-Janeane Garofalo school." Still, her success is a rarity when put into perspective. "Let me make two points: No. 1, it's about f----- time. No. 2, the ratio is still like f---- 20 to one! Call your local comedy club and ask for the Saturday lineup and I guarantee you it's gonna be eight men and one woman. So it is fantastic that we're making strides – like the gay community, there's progress – but we're not there yet."

Ah, yes, Kathy and her gays. Speaking with the publication about being one of the leading celebs when it comes to supporting the LGBT community, Kathy said it wasn't so much a choice, but a natural progression.

"When I was a little kid, I put on musicals in my garage, and sure enough it was the little gay boys who were the most likely to do it with me. As I grew up and started dating in high school, I didn't know that the guys I was dating would go on to become choreographers at Disney World. I am what you call a ''gay maker.'' I believe I can take a heterosexual man and turn him gay, at least at a formative age," she said.
