Bravo is happy to confirm that beloved Top Chef Masters judge and Saveur's editor in chief, James Oseland, wed his boyfriend of five years, Daniel Dos Santos, on December 22nd, 2011 (James notes that this was the Winter Solstice) at New York City's City Hall. The happy couple were surrounded by 30 close friends and family members. James and Daniel exchanged $24 silver-plated rings they purchased a few days before.
"We are the most happy, weirdly compatible two people I know, both finicky and relaxed and soulful at the same time," beamed James. "It’s like the two of us were somehow growing up to be soulmates on totally opposite sides of the world, me in suburban California, Daniel in the Brazilian countryside, drawn together with the kind of electric magnetism that makes marriages happen." So, where did the newlyweds meet? On the street! Daniel teaches English (apparently Daniel learned English in a seminary, as he almost became a priest.)
OK, but what did the cardi-loving judge eat?! After the vows, the wedding party walked to Excellent Pork Chop House, a Taiwanese restaurant in Chinatown, and the first restaurant James and Daniel ever dined at together. James shares, "We all ordered the things Daniel and I usually order, like delicious cold, pickly dishes and some of the best noodles in New York and the most bizarre and fabulous bitter herbal soup to sip on the side."
The celebratory meal ended with a coconut layer cake topped with mini grooms and a tiny plastic leopard-painted cat, designed to look like the couple's cat, Sam, created by James' colleague, Saveur associate food editor, Ben Mims.
