NeNe Leakes Says She "Thought Nothing of" Her Stand-Up Incident at First

The Real Housewives of Atlanta performer explains why she made that controversial joke.

By Laura Rosenfeld

NeNe Leakes wasn't exactly prepared for the backlash that followed a joke she made during one of her stand-up comedy shows last year. In fact, she didn't even realize how much her comment affected the audience immediately after the moment occurred.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta performer detailed the moments leading up to, during, and immediately after an audience member heckled her at one performance of her comedy show during the latest installment of the RHOA After Show, above. "It happened so quick. Like, literally, it was seconds, not even a freaking minute happened. It was seconds of this person was saying something, and I said what I said, and I introduced the next person to the stage, and we walked off," NeNe recalled. "My agents were there. We didn't think anything. We thought nothing of it. And it just kind of happened."

But we all know what happened next. NeNe grabbed headlines for her joke and received an onslaught of negative comments from fans online.

So why did NeNe say what she said, anyway? She explains what drove her to make a comment that would ultimately ignite this firestorm in the video, above.

NeNe opened up more about what it's been like dealing with the fallout from her comedy show in her latest blog on Bravotv.com. "It was very difficult for me dealing with the fallout from my comedy show. I wrote, produced, and created this show myself. The people that attend my show love me and are coming to laugh and have a great time with me!" she wrote. "However this wasn’t my show. This was the comedy show that I host, 'Girls Nite Out For Laughs.' I’ve never dealt with a heckler before, and when I had someone screaming at me, 'Go kill yourself,' I reacted out of emotion in a split second. I wish I could take it back! I never want to harm or hurt anyone! I hope that you all will stand with me and accept my sincere apology. As humans, we make mistakes sometimes. I’ve learned there are a lot of people that do not want to see you win!"

NeNe ended her blog post by showing her gratitude to those who have continued to believe in her, even during these trying times. "Thank you all for the overwhelming amount of support I’ve received from around the world," she wrote. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Another consequence of NeNe's joke was that she was taken off of opening for Xscape on its reunion tour. As Kandi explained during Sunday night's RHOA, that wasn't her decision but that of her fellow Xscape group members and the tour's promoter.

However, that doesn't mean Kandi doesn't have some thoughts on NeNe's controversial statement. You can also get Kandi's take on the situation in the above clip.

The fallout continues during next Sunday's episode at 8/7c. Check out a preview, below.
