We’re just a few weeks out from Thanksgiving, and if you’re hosting this year, it’s time to start envisioning your tablescape. Whether you’re dreaming of a show stopping burst of colors and textures, or something minimalist and monochromatic, the anchor of your table can and should be a runner.

We spend so much money these days on gorgeous tables, what’s the point in covering them up with an old-fashioned tablecloth? Runners are genius for many reasons. First, they set the tone for the table without actually overtaking it. If you’re looking to make a statement, go bold with a vibrant color option or something with embellishments. Looking for a simple, more homespun look? Nothing will get you there faster than a burlap runner.

Secondly, runners make decorating easy—a veritable landing strip for your table, simply fill the space with florals, candles, gourds, serving platters or whatever you’re feeling this season. Lastly, they are practical in that they can cover up water stains on your table—and there’s not as much fabric as a full tablecloth for your guests to dribble gravy on or spill red wine.
