The Most WTF Pop Culture Moments of 2014 (As Told by Real Housewives)
GIF master T. Kyle Macmahon looks back at the year's highs and lows.
Selfies, Pharrell's hat and Kim Kardashian's #BreakTheInternet magazine cover: it's been an insane year in the world of pop culture. So what better way to recap all the madness than with the most popular media of the year: the GIF! Over the years, I've been posting and sharing my favorite Real Housewives moments on my Tumblr, RealityTVGIFs. And in honor of this retrospective of the last 12 months, I'll be illustrating them through the eyes of my favorite Bravo franchise. Grab a drink, NeNe Leakes-style, and let's take a few minutes to reflect on of our favorite pop culture moments from 2014—with commentary from the 'Wives.
Kim Kardashian’s Paper Magazine Cover
Kim Kardashian had a goal to #BreakTheInternet with a cheeky magazine cover—and she succeeded. I'm just waiting for a MoMA exhibit featuring all the memes of Kim's butt—there were some good ones.
Taylor Swift Dominates With '1989'
Her latest is one of the best pop albums released this year—and the biggest. With over 1.3 million in first-week sales, 1989 is Taylor’s fourth consecutive #1 album. Start with "Style," it's a bop. And makes me unleash my inner Camille Grammer.
Pharrell dominated the charts this year with his hit song “Happy.” (Four Grammy wins this year!) But even more recognizable was that hat. Never has a topper been so iconic. Oh, wait…
Justin Bieber’s DUI Arrest
Oh Justin… what are we going to do with you? We’ve watched you go from teen heartthrob to one of America’s Most Hated. There was even a White House petition this year asking for his deportation. Dear Justin, take a page from Kim Zolciak: don’t drink and drive.
Kimye Got Married!
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tied the knot this May in an over-the-top ceremony in Italy. So far, this marriage has lasted about 7 months… which is a lot longer than those 72 days to Kris Humphries.
Beyonce & Jay-Z: Are They Going to Split Up?
Beyonce is the Queen of Mystery. Was she ever really pregnant? Is she apart of the Illuminati? This summer, the biggest gossip story centered on the supposed demise of their marriage, which turned out to be bunk. Still, we were riveted. Grab your popcorn, because as Kenya Moore would say…
Solange Busts Up Jay-Z in an Elevator
Speaking of Bey and Jay: we may never know what sparked that notorious altercation with Jay Z and Solange Knowles in a New York City elevator. But to me it seems like Solange had a Caroline Manzo “Let me tell you a-somethin’ about my family…” moment and snapped. At least everyone made it out of the elevator with their legs intact.
Rihanna Deletes Her Instagram—Then Returns!
In May, Instagram removed Rihanna’s account because "she violated the anti-nude policy."
Instagram later reinstated the account, but an aggravated Rihanna was over it. She rebelled and deleted her account herself. But this November @bagalriri returned! I am glad she still has her stick-figure avatar. Now we just need new music!
People Magazine Names Chris Hemsworth Sexiest Man Alive
Sigh, he's not. But People crowned the Australian actor 2014’s Sexiest Man Alive anyway. One complaint: why is Chris wearing a shirt in the photoshoot? Either way, as Lisa Rinna might say...
That Michael Jackson Hologram
The late, great MJ “performed” a new single at the Billboard Music Awards this year in hologram form.
And it was horrifying.
Gwyneth and Chris Consciously Uncoupled
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced a "conscious uncoupling," which seems like a fancy way of saying… a divorce. The split was amicable and the "uncoupled" couple seems to be happy. They must have taken some advice from Lisa Vanderpump.
Solange Got Married!
On November 16th, Solange Knowles tied the knot with her director beau Alan Ferguson. How gorgeous were her wedding photos? The dress was impeccable, everyone looked absolutely stunning, and Beyonce was there.
Ellen Degeneres Breaks Obama’s Retweet Record
Ellen broke Twitter, literally, when her star-studded Oscars selfie went live and received over one million retweets in an hour. This famous selfie included many Hollywood stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie. Love me, love me, please retweet.
