The Fashion Show
Anna

OK, here we go. Episode 8. This just keeps getting harder and harder and I am still sticking with my initial strategy which is basically not to humiliate myself on national television. So far, I haven’t been in the bottom and everyone else has so … yay for me! The Mini Challenge was a quiz which got me nervous because it has been 10 years since I took any kind of fashion history course and a considerable amount of time since I researched any of those designers. Not to mention the fact that I am a teacher and I couldn’t go back to my class having been knocked out in the first round. My students would crucify me and I really can’t have that. Lucky for me I hung in there and ended up beating out someone who just graduated from school. Age before beauty I guess ….

The whole process of picking the designer I wanted and assigning the others to the other designers was daunting and in the end only Reco had a problem with it. My strategy really consisted of this: I knew Daniella would be fine no matter who she got. She is going to the final no matter what. Haven wanted and got YSL because she has totally been a support system for me, and last week when she stood up and said all those nice things about me to the judges. I knew I would have to return the favor. Johnny wanted Versace and I gave it to him. He is really supportive of me too and right now, living in this bubble away from my family and friends, you got to give love to get love. Johnny has also been in the bottom so much I think he needed something he could thrive on. James-Paul ended up wanting Pucci which worked for me because I didn’t and he is just going to make boxes anyway. Merlin - his taste level is questionable so something simple but elegant might be a challenge. Both he and Reco have a tendency to add lots of crap to a garment to make it look “expensive” and it ends up looking gaudy. Halston could have worked really well for his glamour aesthetic if he had kept it simple.

I loved my piece and apparently the audience did too but as usual the judges didn’t. There was a very blurred line between how much “Chanel” it needed to be and how much “Anna,” and how I felt like if I had put as much of me in it as I did I wouldn’t have liked it as much. Regardless, the audience loved it and they are my customers. I also did not think it was cheap-looking comparatively. I was happy for Johnny. I love him and I really hope he does well here and in life.

And then it was down to Haven and Reco. I love Haven so obviously I am biased. She has great taste and style and for me that counts more than being able to sew. Reco is a very good person but he absolutely needs to realize that he does not know everything and he has a lot left to learn. I think that I have a lot to learn and that a person can learn and grow for the rest of their lives. Reco has a certain amount of naivete that is endearing but also irritating. He has big plans for fame and fortune but really needs to take smaller steps, focus less on fame and more on what he loves about what he does, and be much more critical of his own work. That Renaissance fair dress was one of the worst things I have seen yet since I have been here, yet he loved it. I think this experience may give him the humility that he needs. Regardless, I miss Haven already. Who is going to make me laugh now? Johnny has a lot to live up to I think. Two more eliminations!

Anna, every week you show a little more of what it takes to not only win this competition, but run a successful fashion company. You have the talent, intelligence, skills, taste, and operate as a savvy, compassionate professional. And now we know that you also are competitive! Rock on! Keep blowing the other designers off the runway...you are the best. Can't wait to buy your label someday soon.

I was cheering when you gave Reco Halston. Reco is a talented designer but I'm so sick of him childishly running his mouth! Hopefully he got a little life lesson out of the experience. I doubt that he was ever in any real danger of getting sent home because the judges know what makes for good ratings. As for those who say it was too meanspirited, I see it as a valid business decision. The fashion industry is a tough arena. What do you think Reco would have done if it was up to him to assign the designers?

I like you Anna, but can you must have seen Project Runway..last year...same pleating (as you call it) as Leah!

I don't think you were mean to Reco. He makes critical comments about everyone, every episode. He also brags constantly about how he is the best.. he criticized Angel for not knowing what a "B-Girl" is and made fun of her attempt at the B-Girl outfit, didn't he? It should be more important to know iconic designer's styles (before teen clique styles from high school) if one's goal is to BE a designer, shouldn't it? Well, he was lucky. Angel was sent home for not knowing B-Girl style. Reco got to stay. Maybe this will reduce his inflated ego a little and make him concentrate on his talent and less on criticizing others and bragging about how great he is?? I thought you did a great job on your outfit this week.

Anna you were cool until now. I understand it is a comp. but really let your talent show through if your talent is good enough you will win. If it takes you sabotaging another person....Just shows you know Reco is good and he is comp for you!! I did like you....Maybe you can redeem yourself

Wow,I can't believe people are taking your actions so personally! It's a COMPETITION why wouldn't you challenge one of the front runners? I'm sure the editing had a lot to do with making you look mean as well. You rock and I hope you will win this!

Anna,

You were the only designer who stayed on planet earth! The collections viewed, especially Merlin, johnny and Reco, who do they think are going to wear such blatant costumes, maybe the characters on CATS or aliens in MIB but not beautiful people or those of us who hope what we wear helps us look beautiful, even Daniella was so off. You and only you deserve to win. It's called the FASHION SHOW not the FREAK SHOW. Best of Luck.

In my humble opinion your friend is gone because of your answer to Fern's question (not to mention that her garment was poorly constructed). Your reply to Fern in my humble opinion made you sound like you are a "JUDGE"--"I wanted to see what they could do".

You made women designers look as if we are incapable of competing on a level playing field. SHAME ON YOU!!!

Stick to making coats--you are good at that.

Anna, I LOVE your work every week, and after seeing the pictures from your final collection, I am totally rooting for you to win. Obviously I am no fashion guru, but as a normal 20-something girl I would buy and wear every single piece you had in that collection - they were all amazing.

Also, don't know why these people are writing mean things, I can't stand Reco being so dramatic, he should know SOMETHING about major fashion designers...

Oh my Gosh - how did she sabotage anybody - Reco is the great and powerfull designer - It was very endearing to see him humble at the end of the show. We got to see him as human, it gave us a chance to like him. I hope he does well - personally I liked his dress - it might not have been Halston but it was beautiful. I think Merlin needs to go home - he has a really bad attitude - he designs some beautiful things but finding someone to work with him will be a feat all its own.

I have to say that the first thing I thought when I saw the pleating detail on your skirt was that it looked a lot like Leann Marshall's "petals" in her PR collection.

Anna,
I didn't really have a problem with you until this challenge. And I think the judges saw through your whole strategy, and that's why they sent Haven home.

Reco has sewn incredibly well through out all the challenges. Much better than anyone else I have seen in many of these types of shows. He has a great eye and has probably come from worse than you. It doesn't sound like he had the opportunity to go to school like you have. His ignorance shouldn't punish him when he has come so far over 7 years.

Your comments show the ugly side of you. It's not a side I like, and I hope I won't have to see it much longer.

I think this blog and your choices says a lot about you. I think you were very fair. Reco and Merlin constantly brag and criticize everyone (esp. the women) and, so, they should have been able to rise to any challenge and get out of their "boxes". You have always remained cool and not let them and their drama take you down. The advantage you were given was a "prize".. just as it would have been had you won immunity from elimination.. so, why not use it to your advantage at this stage of a very stiff competition? Had Reco or Merlin been given this advantage, I am sure that they would have been much more "cunning and Mean" in their choices for their opponents. They both need to "put up or shut up".. They are openly critical of everyone else and brag constantly about how talented they are, so, it should not have been a problem for them to come up with something great, right? I loved your design and the pleating was very well done and made the skirt. Many women would wear that outfit, I am sure. Best wishes to you and continue to block out the negative unless it is something worth considering from the judges.. The men would throw any of the women under the bus in a heartbeat. I like how the women show class and ignore most of the banter from the insecure, loud men (you know which men I am referring to?) It will now be a photo finish, so, stick to your heart. I think you are very talented and true to your creative mind. I am sure that you are a good teacher and I'll bet your students are very proud of you!!

You did an excellent job with the assignments. You had the power and you used it to your advantage. You did exactly what anyone else would do except you took care of your friends too. I'm sure the producers would have preferred it if you were more mean and nasty with your choices. I appreciate you work and agree that you haven't been getting the credit you deserve. Well done!

PS - Do more knits!

I'm not understanding why viewers are displeased with you for being somewhat strategic. Is this not a competition? I like Recco. He is interesting and talented. But you, too, are talented! You want to win! Is that so bad? I think not.

Ana, why would you set the men up? Reco is the best designer on the show. You must think the same or at least be intimated by him since you tried youR best to get him kicked off the show. I don't think his designs are gaudy, yours are just boring. You are only good with jackets like the other viewer said. You plan back fired, so what sneaky thing do you have up your sleeve now???????????

"the people you've aligned yourself with are mean-spirited ( Danielle) and weak (whats-his-name). I wish you the best and hope that you are a lot better than you've recently. across."

Totally agree! Your choice of comrades says a lot about you. I hope your students won't crucify you for being such a scheming person, because I won't be surprised if many of them do love Reco as well and want to see a fair game where everyone has a chance to do their best at what they can. As a teacher, you kinda failed on so many levels.

Reco, Shemco! It's a COMPETITION for crying out loud. Whatta you want Ana to do, help EVERYONE? Ana, keep on doing what you need to do to win-even if it means playing up to other's strengths and weaknesses. Love your designs!!

you were extremely mean on this challenge. you knew that reco did not know who halstorm was. I really did like you, but after this episode, I'm beginning to pair you with Daniella...and my goodness, that is not a good thing, and Johnny....please...he needs to go. You talk about Merlins questionable taste, but put yourself in a group with a man who wears tony the tiger stripes and keeps complaining about how much he doesnt care.

Its too bad that your designs are so beautiful and you are so mean.

"My initial strategy which is basically not to humiliate myself on national television." It's to late for that I'm afraid. There are many ways to humiliate yourself on national television and they don't just rely on your design. Your human qualities also shine thru on a competitive environment. You had two choices in this competition. First, to allow other designers to show their best work by matching their strengths with the designers. Or second, to play favorites . As a professional designer what type of leadership style would you prefer working under? One that works with other designers talents despite personal feelings or one that relies on suppositions such as you wrote about Haven, "she has totally been a support system for me, and last week when she stood up and said all those nice things about me to the judges. I knew I would have to return the favor."...This was an opportunity to show your leadership style ...In short, it wasn't impressive.

For the elimination challenge, what would have been fair was if Anna picked which designer she wanted to do, then the others were given designers at random. Anna gave her friends the designers they wanted/were familiar with, and the rest had to fend for themselves. It seemed that she was called out on this during judging. I also would have preferred the jacket be black & white as the dress was. However, Anna's design of both the dress and the jacket is reminiscent of what another designer did on PR last season, so I could not get fully behind Anna's creation--it's already been done.

Everyone commenting on this blog needs to grow up and realize that this is a business not a popularity contest. These contestants are in a bubble with their fellow competitors, so of course they will have people that they become close with. Please remember before you start blasting someone on a blog that this is also a competition. Regardless of the icon that the designers were assigned, Anna didn't stand next to them and make their patterns. Anyone on this show should be able to take inspiration from fashion icons and design a piece with their own personal interpretation. If you are going to be successful in this business you need to educate yourself on the predecessors. So in conclusion, please stop whining and just let this play out! I am confident that the right person will prevail!

Wow. I really disliked you in this episode. I felt like you were out to get the men. I think your designs are beautiful, but totally felt you copied Leanne Marshall's skirt design with the waves from Project Runway season 5.

What do you have against Reco anyway? He is a nice guy.

The judges are right -- Reco should know the work of Halston. As a designer, it is his JOB. Not Anna's fault. He should have gone home, but he makes good TV, so there's no way the producers would let Haven stay in his place. Now that that's off my chest, Marlin is a sexist pig -- for a fashion designer, sexism is really out of place. I hope he's next.

Anna,

If you were really sure of yourself as a designer you would not have tried to sabotage the others. Remember what goes around comes around. Even if you don't believe so, it is so.

Would you feel better if you won because you really are the best or if you won because you took advantage of the fact that questions on the mini-challenge were easier for you because you are a teacher?

If you were the best, you would have won this challenge, obviously you are not.

You had the chance to make this a very interesting competition, by giving each of your competitors what you or they thought was their favorite choice, everybody would have had a chance to shine and the designs themselves would have been better all around. But you missed it. Small minds usually do. They don't see the big picture.

You should learn a lesson from your friend Haven, she is very happy the way she is because she is true to herself and is more interested in designing something she likes than in taking advantage of a bit of luck to block or derail the rest of the competition.

I think you missed the point - that jacket wasn't Chanel. It was ugly. You really tried to play Reco - most people don't find his stuff gaudy. We like it. You haven't been in the bottom, but you haven't been in the top consistently either. We'll see how much longer you last. I hope not too long!

I think it is terribly condescending to point out an apparent knowledge gap in Reco's design education. He may not have gone to the best design school, but his talent is unmistakeable. I find him funny and warm, while you and Daniella are catty and spiteful. It is a shame.

Anna, I have been watching each week and agree that you have been low-key, talented, and very supportive of your competition. I felt it was about time that you were spot-lighted and given some TV time. Each week you have made fabulous clothes that were well thought out, and well made, wearable designs. It is, however, a design competition and I thought you were more than fair with the others considering what they would have done to you if the tables were turned. The boys(Reco & Merlin) certainly say enough behind everyones backs as noted by the narratives on the show.

You were very generous, plus any good designer should be able to meet the challenge.
By the way, I loved that you incorporated color in your jacket, as your own spin, as you were directed. I was surprised the judges didn't recognize their own directives. I agree that a black jacket would have been too much Chanel and not enough you.

Hope you make it to the finals as I would love to see your collection.

Reco should know who Halston is, that's like wanting to be a pop star and not knowing who Madonna is, that should have been your defense, it's criminal and embarrasing that he did not know Halston.

anna, don't listen to the haters. i think you're right on the money about Reco, and he DID need to be taken down a notch. even if he doesn't know Halsten, that's no excuse for making that monstrosity of a dress.
that said, i think the right person left the show. while Reco might be limited in his knowledge of fashion history, Haven has been consistently limited in her inspiration. i find her "style" cheesy and passe.

Ah, so Reco needed to learn a lesson, and you were just the one to do it, yes? I admired that you did not embroil yourself in the petty backstabbing that so often happens on this show (and its predecessor), yet you couldn't help yourself after all. What a thrill you must have had watching his tears? What a rush to feel as if you've broken someone.
Of course, now the question is who will now teach you a lesson for your bratty, schoolgirl antics? hmmm...

Anna,
I used to be so impressed by you and your fair competative nature but last night you threw me a curve with the spitefullness of you choices. I only wish you the best for the rest of the contest but you will have to go a long way to get my support! And for that I'm sorry because I do think you are certifable talent. I will be the first one to say Recco attitude is not pleasant, but how many male designers do you know that don't have this over the top personality. If he just sew and design with a closed mouth you would knock him for being un-sociable.

06/26/2009 - 9:29am

Whatever...How daunting can assigning designers be when you knew what "your friends" wanted and that Reco didn't know anything about Halston, which he said aloud with you standing beside him before he answered the question -- Which celebrity was known for wearing Halston. You used it to you and "your friends' advantage," but you didn't own up to it until asked by Fern at elimination. It's one thing to play the game, but another to pretend that you don't know what you did even when you get called out on it.

Anna, you are incorrect when saying "Reco is the only one who had a problem with it". From the clip shown on TV, Merlin stated you set the men up. I agree with him. You played favorites with the people you like when assigning the designers. Your strategy backfired and Haven is now gone. Hopefully you learned your lesson. Assign people according to their strong points and then see how you do. That was cowardly and despicable. Shame on you. I liked you until now. I thought your dress was ugly, the jacket did NOT go with it and I wouldn't wear it if you paid me too. Your only talent lies in making coats.

Whatever....How daunting can the task of assigning the designers be when you knew which designer "your friends" wanted and more to the point that Reco didn't know anything about Halston, which he said aloud (with you standing next to him) before he answered his question -- which celebrity was known for wearing Halston. You used that to you and "your friends'" advantage when you assigned Halston to Reco, and you didn't own up to what you did until you were asked directly by one of the judges.

Your assignments should not have mattered to any design artist who studied their craft. Reco didnt get burned by you, he was burned by his ignorance and attempt at doing his own cheap-looking mass appeal. Your Chanel-inspired dress was perfect. I think the judges forgot that you were told to add your own flair to the design. The color of your jacket was clearly your own, but the cut and fit still paid homage to Coco Chanel. And, after being told your jacket should have been black/white, Isaac chided everyone for failing to use adequate bursts of color. Good work, keep them on their toes.

Anna, the pleating detail that you created on your dress last night, which you claimed to be 'yours' bears an astonishing similarity to a piece from Valentino Couture SS08 collection. I don't think you were more than 'inspired'. As a teacher, what message do you give your students on plagiarism?

It seems a little harsh to bear down on Reco so much in your blog- didn't you punish him enough by essentially intentionally screwing him over with your choice for him during the challenge? I understand why you did it- it is a competition, after all- but do you need to continue it? Let the man gather the shreds of his dignity and leave him in peace. You sound a little gloatful and unsympathetic, which I didn't expect from you. You did your piece, and even though you're a teacher by profession, it's a little much to relish teaching someone a lesson that much.

But I did love your dress- it was certainly something many women would wear.
