Bravotv.com: What is your relationship with shoes? Are you a shoe-aholic? What is your favorite pair? Most you’ve ever spent on a pair?
I think like most women, you can’t ever have enough shoes. Also, shoes are always the fallback purchase when you are feeling fat, and nothing fits, so you don’t want to buy any new clothes … shoes are always the “pick-me-up.”
Also NYC is very hard on shoes … so I am always looking for comfortable ones that don’t get destroyed by our streets.
Bravotv.com: How important are shoes to creating an entire look?
Shoes can be very important to a look, but truthfully, sometimes I angst so much over a shoe for a big party … and really when you get there … and there are hundreds of people at cocktails somewhere, no one can ever even sees your shoes, or there isn't enough space to look down. And when it’s for big seated galas, what is visible from the waist up is most important. However, wearing great shoes that are also comfortable can make you feel great and that is the most important aspect. If you are doing anything important, and your feet hurt because you are wearing some ridiculously fabulous , too-high heeled shoe that is uncomfortable, your entire experience is ruined ... and pained … and you walk like you are a cripple … it’s not pretty.
Bravotv.com: What kind of “inspiration” were you looking for in the dress?
I was wanting each of the looks to have some relevance to the particular shoe that was selected. Not necessarily a “match-matchy” look, but something where the shoe provides an exclamation point … and works with the color, the proportion, the mood of the shoe.
Bravotv.com: Which looks stood out to you the most (for better or for worse)?
I liked Daniela’s dress … for the reasons I explained on the show. The shoes had a reference point — like a center seam or spine that was subtly included on the front of the dress. It was a dress that was very sexy, and timely, and well done, and the shoe worked with it, without looking like a dress that was specifically designed to go with it.
Bravotv.com: It seemed like the final decision came down to which is worse — being bland or over-the-top? What’s your take on it?
It was a difficult decision, as I didn’t hate Andrew’s dress so much — even though it was a bit bland … and as George said, many of his clients would wear that dress. I don’t think, however, it took any advantage of the beautiful Manolo Blahnik shoe that he started with.
On the other hand, the leap that Lidia took was unfortunate, but we had consistently been seeing her get better and better, and have higher expectations for her, and wanted to see what she would do next with the input and constructive criticism.
But basically, bland is never acceptable.
Fern--you are the one bright spot in a sad production that at once tries too hard to be PR and then insists it's not. Kelli is just vapid, Isaac is way too snarky, ("Oh darling!" Ugh.), and the whole thing seems just so...pathetic.
Except you! Your fashion sense is impeccable, and your comments about the designs are thoughtful and true, as opposed to those of the other judges which come across as just mean-spirited.
Also, since you are a real woman and not a stick-sized model, I love seeing what you wear each week. Your outfits inspire me each week. So, I continue to watch the show only because it is about sewing and fashion, and because of you.
I really loved what you wore on the show tonight. Please tell us in your next blog, was it INC?
I have been a great admirer of yours for quite some time. I was very excited to see that you were participating in a public fashion forum. I do WISH that more time was given to you and your sage knowledge... I would have written to the producers or Isaac, but there is no way to do that.
Thank you...my best aloha to you... Joan Smith an EX New Yorker fashionista.
I LOVE your eyeglasses! Where are they from? What designer, if any? Thanks!
On the June 4th show your jacket was made from the same patter as Pier 1 Imports table runners and placemats (cream with multi-colored florals). Way cute! Just thought it was interesting and found myself wondering what designer you were wearing?
I've always loved Isaac Mizrahi, but that has started to change since this show started airing. Personally, I think that there is value to fashion for fashion's sake as well as for fashion designed to really be wearable by women who are not very rich and very thin. I find it curious that a designer who designed for Target and now for Liz Claiborne is so critical of clothing that is commercial.
And I concur that Kelli is not qualified to be a judge. Having, as she put it, "sat front row" at fashion shows does not exactly make one a fashion expert. Nor is she remotely charismatic.
I could understand either choice and I think you are all doing a great job. That was going to be a tough decision either way. I enjoyed Project Runway, but I also really like the changes that have been made to that format for the new show. I hope it does well and continues on.
weird that poorly constructed, unflattering and unfinished work trumps bland. I personally found Andrew's dress sophisticated and lovely in construction. His model looked beautiful. A dress that most women would considered as opposed to several other horrible designs, such as the disaster that Merlin created. The guest judge got it right and in spite of being bullied did not roll over, as did the other judges. Hope this week goes better. Sorry Andrew.
For me, it seemed a travesty that Andrew was sent home when Lidia's dress was such a nightmare. It really was an indication to me who's really running this show, one very obnoxious, opinionated, and 'over the top' judge. I am an avid reality TV fan, especially on Bravo, and in all the years of watching, this decision really seemed 'off the mark,' quite manipulated and controlled specifically by that one judge, especially taking into consideration, as pointed out, that Andrew had won the previous week's challenge. Sorry, Andrew, you deserved much better. The comments about your not using enough color were such a sham, given Rico and the other two top contenders were using not much more than basic black and white. Thank you.
i love the show! i've definitley always been a huge fan of all these fashion shows on tv, they give great ideas to the viewers and always keep us up to date with the latest trends. although i do think that they try to make different looks for all types of women and lifestlyes, i would really love to see them make great high fashion looks for maternity! when i was pregnant with my son i looked everywhere for fashionable pregnantwear but was always let down. i think that it would be a huge challenge for the designers as well as a great oppurtinity for all women to see that being pregnant can also be trendy. hopefully on the next season they might take it into consideration????
--i look forward to seeing all the new looks and will definitley be watching!!!!!
xoxo,
Dean'a
Tell someone that Kelli needs to go! Issac is great! You are great...but really...Kelli is not qualified!
After watching the last show and seeing the Ego(Isaac) of one judge...the bullying of another...and then choosing the designer to leave..You don't deserve to be "judges"...that dress you sent home at least looked like a desiegner piece...The "dress" you didn't get rid of wasn't even wearable...and was really poorly thought out and looked even worse..I believe Isaac just wanted to "get his way"...Can't you "judges" stick to your own opinions and not kowtow to Isaacs "BAD" judgement..I will try one more show...BUT..... (I am not alone in this opinion)
Its interesting that you commented that colors are 'in' right now, when you guys have picked 3/4 ALL BLACK DESIGNS! [EW] and a bland jacket
Fern,
What are you thinking...are you trying to negatively impact the "Fashion Week" brand by providing credance to this show?
I hope BRAVO is paying you enough to retire on.
Your cothes are dynamite and I love the tunics you wear, would you share where you purchase. I especially love the light turquoise one you wore with the shiny bright turquoise tights, saw your pic in the New York Social Diary. Loved that outfit. Thanks so much. Nancy Van Voast
Fern I love you on the show and wouldn't watch it if you weren't on. You give the show a credibility that it would lack if you weren't there. I love your insight(You really should play the "TIM GUNN" role in this show) I do understand it sounds like i'm kissing ass but who's better to kiss. I do struggle with the judges decision with Reco's win. While his dress was beautiful, i didn't see it as "fashion forward". He put bias strips together and made a dress with the same silhouette as Kenley Collens' blue bridesmaid dress in the last season of Project Runway Finale. I agree with you Daniella's dress stood out the most. :-)
Andrew's dress was by FAR the most wearable dress there. I would wear it, my neighbors would wear it, my daughter/mother/sister would wear it.
What is the point of making "fashion" that real people would never wear? Most of those dresses were either costume-y or would make anyone not 6 ft tall and reed thin look BAD.
Joke.
Interesting, "bland is never acceptable" but a poorly executed mess that was described as something that would be used to hang over a sarcophagus is more acceptable. I guess that explains the racks and racks of unbought clothing that never sells. Seems like waffling to me.
I am writing to provide constructivve comments on your show. 1. I am looking for more connection with the visual and the verbal communication. When you comment on the work, I would like to see close up what its all about. 2. as far as winners are concerned, I would also like a visual connection on why it won. The show seems to be breezing through and not seriously thought of from camera angles, topics for discussion or even like the theme of the show or what we get from watching that episode. At the moment, the show looks muddled and lacks focus. I can see a lot of creative ideas wasted and not fully developed. The show definitely needs improvement and tweaking to hold up on its own.
