Johnny discusses his newfound admiration for Merlin.
Jun 18, 2009This has been the highlight for me since I’ve been here … me and Merlin won the Mini Challenge so we won five minutes of personal consultation time with Isaac Mizrahi. My heart was pounding with nerves and excitement. Just being able to have one-on-one time with someone you have admired and highly respect is very overwhelming. His collection was stunning. All the mixing of fabrication and texture, I was trying to take it all in. Leaving Issac’s I had a really strong idea of the direction I wanted to go in. I was nervous working with Merlin just because he is very flashy with his work. But, he was very open to my ideas and let me have full reign with this challenge. I was worried because although we are a team we are being judged individually and the complete look was in the design, fabric selection, all the details, and trims, so if they hated it I was fully responsible and he’d (Merlin) would surely let the judge know. But in the end the judges loved it all, not one negative comment — well the fabric choice for the jacket — but Veronica Webb said she would totally wear it so to me I totally won and I know I wouldn’t have been able to have done this complete look without Merlin. He really was exceptional.

Your design was the best, even if it did not win. I liked everything, the jacket, the skirt, the blouse. It also had the best silhouette.
I am very glad that you and Merlin got along and that you guys played to your strengths. It was definitely a great team effort and it showed in the final product. It is also fantastic that you realized that the construction is important, people (like me) who like clothes always look at the material and the construction (seams, cut, finishing). Well made clothes feel better when you have them on. Good luck to you both.

well..what can i say about you!..i love your very calmed, sweet personality and how u keep your cool when thinkin about what to do with each challenge...definitely loved the episode with you and Merlin altho you guys are against each other, you definitely showed and proved your professionalism working together....GOOD JOB..and i loved your jacket..keep up good work and good luck
Johnny, If it wasn't for Merlin you would have been sent home...like you should have been weeks ago. You acted surprised about how good contruction of a design makes it everything. You are not qualified to be a designer. Who cares if you have a backer at home(?)...that is where you should be.

Johnny, At the last challenge you appeared to have given up. But aren't you glad you did not go home? now just shine. Looking at your blog and the comfort and wearability of your clothes for people, lets me know you'll go far. I look forward to seeing what's next.
