Laura Brown

Budget or Bank?

Laura Brown reveals her fears about this week's mini-challenge.

May 15, 2009

Budget or bank, bank or budget? That is the question that faced our kids tonight — and it was a damn hard one. If everyone could tell the difference between cheap and expensive, fashion people would be in a whole lot of trouble. Real style comes from a mix of high and low — investing in some high-end pieces, getting some cheap thrills, and making the whole thing look like it goes seamlessly together. And hell, it's a recession! Who's got the money to be all designer, all the time anyway?

So, I felt for them all this time, I really did. I did have a concern when I saw the clothes, which, frankly, were tricky — something from the high street had a better lining than a designer piece! So I thought, what if this becomes like a Rubik's Cube (hello, James-Paul’s elimination frock!), and days, weeks, years, go by when the kids can't solve it? What if the combination is never quite right? Like, ever?

Well, it started off well. Team Tube Dress had it going on — getting it right after one try. But then, as we say in Australia, it "all went pear-shaped." God bless Team Harem Pants, with Markus's weirdly confident handbag smelling and all the random belt swapping. But it was wrong, wrong, wrong! If only they could have seen mine and Kelly's panicked eyes as they got it wrong over and OVER again. It was all I could do not to send someone a hint in Morse code.

And I know it's shocking, but 13 mins passing in TV time is like ... dog years. Especially you are standing there in your dress and heels, it's, um, uncomfortable. Then, throw in a stopwatch you don't know how to work (and I’m not even a natural blond). Sigh.

Eventually, we got there. Merlin’s team, Team Bolero, congratulations. I concur with the ever sage Reco, "You can’t underestimate those little ones."

Anyway, I scooted off back to my day job, thinking I got off easy — after all, I didn't have to make a 40 buck cocktail dress for Tinsley Mortimer.

But the highlight of this episode, for me, was two words from the mouth of James-Paul: “Stealth fighter." Clearly, he’s never met Tinsley.

I miss project runway's critique of every designer's outfit. The audience input is nice- but I wonder about their taste sometimes when safety pins and crazy weird I'll never buy doesn't send someone home while a slightly duller, well made outfit with more (good) taste does send someone home.

I like the mini challenges though, though I agree with you Laura here.

Gotta feel for Angel...I too am from Indiana and have never heard the term "B-Girl" used. Why not say hip-hop if it is hip-hop?

I like the new show. Yes, it is differnt from PR, but it has a lot of advantages over PR. Having a show in front of an audience each time with the audience having input, for example, does away with a lot of the complaining that went on about PR. In fact, in some ways, I like the new version of the show better...I hope it continues.

This show is awful. Kelly Roland? Really? The fashion show looks like it could be in my basement with a few fancy lights. Most of the designers can't even sew. How can you create clothing and not know how a button is sewn on. These contestants aren't even known in the industry and already they act like they are Gods. Hard to believe these are the same producers of Project Runway. I am just not "Buying It".

Tinsley Mortimer is to New York what Paris hiltn is to the West Coast. A socialite without descernable skills known within her own social circle for her fashions for which she spends an enormous amount of money making fashion gurus, stylists, editors, and designers love her for reasons unknown other than her credit card.

I like the show. I liked Project Runway too but it isnt on any more so deal with it, people. You're either a fan of fashion and/or design or you arent. You can always change the channel.

How terrible is it that this weeks winning outfit was created with only $40 but somehow bravotv.com is selling it for $120!!!! Thats just insane!

Love Isaac - but what is Kelly Rowland doing on this show? Couldn't they find someone from the fashion world, or at least someone with a personality?

I agree with comment #1. This show is horrible and is not even close to Project Runway.

I watched this show at 3 am when i was up with my daughter. It is horrible.. not even in the same realm as project runway.. bravo needs to pack it in. This show is awful.

OMG too funny. I thought the same thing about James-Paul!

I agree!

Correction. it wasn't team tube dress that got bank/budget right the first try, it was Merlin, James-Paul, Angel and Lidia. That's OK ... this time! Ha! Just kidding.

I have never heard of Tinsley

What is she famous for?

how is that someone that cannot sew is on this show?
safety pins? there must have been other people that auditioned. Wouldn't sewing skills be something that you review in selecting a contestant? Having a seamstress and pattern maker do the work for you is not cheating? Which dictionary do you use?

You know, I really wish we got to see this side of you on the show Ms. Brown. You are really witty and seem to empathize with what the contestants are being asked to do but that doesn't come across at all on the show. It's a shame.
