Coca-Cola's First Alcoholic Drink Is Coming (But There's a Catch)

Stop EVERYTHING in the name of boozy Coke!

By Macy Daniela Martin

Everyone, Coke is prepared to be to more than just a shot chaser and cocktail mixer! According to a blog post on the beverage company's website, Coca-Cola's first alcoholic drink is coming ... to Japan! (There's always a catch, amiright?) Geography aside, Coke plans to enter the booze category with a proprietary Chu-Hi recipe, which for anyone unfamiliar with Japanese drinks, is a carbonated bev made with shōchū, sparkling water, and added fruity flavors like grapefruit and peach.

Chu-Hi has a "relatively low ABV between three and eight percent," Esquire reports, giving it similar vibes to, say, college go-to Smirnoff Ice. And we're intrigued to say the least.

Coke's president of its Japan business unit, Jorge Garduño, said in the blog post that this marks the first time the brand has experimented with booze in its 126-year history.

However, he noted, the rest of us shouldn't expect to see Coke-branded spiked soda on our shelves — their Chu-Hi will not cross borders. "While many markets are becoming more like Japan, I think the culture here is still very unique and special, so many products that are born here will stay here."

Sadly, Coke's blog post didn't include a release date for the exciting new product, but in the meantime ... how much is a trip to Japan?
