- Alex reflects on his Millionaire Matchmaker experience!
The first rule about being on a reality show is not "Don’t slug your date" or "Attach prosthetics firmly and ahead of time" or any other of the seemingly likely candidates. No, the first rule about being on a reality show is “Don’t drive to the wrong set." This happened to me on the morning I was supposed to meet "the girls." My friend Mark and I drove into Studio City and found, as we pulled up to the address, an impressive array of film-set gear: The table with the sandwiches. The policeman that had been brought in for traffic management. Racks of lighting equipment and special cameras hovered over by their priests and acolytes. Everyone with that studious disinterest that we all affect when we’re being gawked at by tourists. I had clearly come to the right place, ground zero for Millionaire Matchmaker. A set in keeping with Millionaire Matchmaker’s stature.
We pulled up to a special cordoned-off parking zone, and a zippy security guard was on us instantly. Mark pointed at me and said, "he’s 'the talent.'" That standard industry phrase for actors has always struck me as at best presumptuous and at worst completely ironic. Calling actors “the talent” seems a little like calling judges “the wisdom” or lawyers “the evil." Most of them have plenty of it, sure, but can you generalize?
The security guard was shortly replaced with a woman with a clipboard. I began to suspect I might not be “the talent” they were looking for. Sure enough, she confirmed that the elegant set we were parked at was for a full-budget motion picture. My driver (we “talent” always have a driver, even if it’s just our buddy Mark, hired for the day) and I had stopped one block too soon.
We drove another block and found our building, desolate in the way all bars are at 10:30 in the morning. We quickly confirmed that we were at the right place. However, I was told, “the girls” were already inside, and because any premature sighting of me would apparently devastate the emotional integrity of our show, if not cause an actual spontaneous polygamy, I was told to stand outside on the side of the building on the sidewalk.

Hi Alex,
Your blog rocks!! Thank you for writing it; I have not laughed so hard in a long while. I applaud you for maintaining your personal style against the forces of California. Having recently moved to California from Alaska, I'm in a bit of culture shock myself.
I'm sorry things didn't work out for you and Krista, but your bashert is out there somewhere. Occasionally when a person stops looking, the right one trips over your clown shoes and falls right into your lap :)
Good luck and safe travels...

I catch 'the show' once in awhile, but Alex is by far my favorite. Sigh. Need you in a 50-something version that can also ride a horse, dance gracefully, and yes.... highly skilled in 'other arts'.... games you could discuss and do battle on WOW, HALO, the like with my hotshot sons... who can also put almost any adult to shame discussing philosophy. One is an artist by nature, the other my DaVinci: the philosopher/mathemetician. I'm so proud of them.
Alex, best of the Quest to you.

Alex,
Your sense of humor is great! I'm glad you didn't give in to Patti about the cuff links and wardrobe. Many a time, I've cringed listening to her try to bully some of those poor men who purchase her services into conforming to her idea of what women want. Sometimes I wonder if her real career aspiration was to be a dominatrix. She may know what California women want, but she sure can't speak for all of us. I thought you were great! You had my heart. Then again, I not only know who Pynchon is, I've read Gravity's Rainbow--every twisted, hilariously disgusting scene!

Krista, as far as the viewer could see was the only one to pick. She offered a dynamic personality, candid conversation sprinkled with humor and wit, and good looks? What more could you have looked for in a blind date? The other woman seemed a bit uncomfortable, that's the best I can say as I wasn't there.
Alex, I would not worry, just make a point of getting out there to date. It's hard work but it's worth it and should be fun! If you can set your mind to making yourself a success in business you can also set your mind and heart to finding a woman who will compliment you.
BTW: Giggled through the entire blog, thanks for those fun moments.
Good luck and have fun out there!

The story you just told about your trip reminds me of a Twain quote "After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her."
You were funny and entertaining to watch, hope it brings you the love you seek.

Alex,
Love the cufflinks, gives a certain old style look. THe haircut was great; I thought Patti was going to do a major scalp redo. A man who names his Cadillac Betty, (sigh) shouldn't have that much trouble finding his one and only. Good Luck in Love!!!

I've just recently seen this episode of the show, and I really like the tips that Patti gave. She is a woman that knows her business, and to bad every city and state doesn't have a clone of her! I doubt there would be so many of us single people running around.
I love your writing style, it really kept me interested. Good luck on your search for love.

Hi there Alex, I have made the comment to Patty about how attractive I really thought you were and not that but the brains as well with the determination. I wanted to know if you would be willing to meet a woman from Texas that is very interested in learning more about you and knowing how I can do so.

I loved this episode. My favorite yet because of Alex and Krista.
Krista is so cool. I loved how she showed up for the meet and greet in pants and just being herself. This is the type of gal who owns a room in a pair of jeans by just sporting her cool attitude. Obviously not a gold digger. She seemed like she was there almost for sport.
Alex manages to be the 40-something money guy trying for a beautiful young female's affections without coming across as a smarmy jerk like most of the other guys on the show.
When I watched the date my initial thought was "Geez, these two are perfect for each other." And then I realized they probably didn't get past a couple of dates. They just aren't a good match, to me.
Krista is still really young, and beautiful, but more so than that, she is cool to the bone, smart not just in a book way but in a people way, and has a great life cut out for her with a man her own age who she can build a life with built on mutual affection, great conversation (more than 1-liners) and trust. I just think she would get bored with an older guy who is all about business and competition.
Alex just isn't like that. He seemed a little stilted when it came to dealing with people, almost like it didn't come naturally. Fantasy dates will get an older bachelor with money a great gal's attention but what comes after? I just see him pictured with an older woman who is kind of nerdy, socially awkward, but brilliant in a book way, perhaps a neurobiologist or some such? She can still be attractive, of course!
But, it was a fun show to watch, and that was the point, right? Bravo! Lol. Great reality tv, especially the Tiffany gifts. And I'd like to see more of these bachelors get drunk on their date. Five drinks? Why not six!

Hi Alex,
Wow, you seem like a sweet guy...honestly, Patty is right, cutting your hair is a good idea. I think you would be a real hottie if you did. I am from New Jersey and single. I am also looking for someone who is intelligent (I have 2 masters degrees) so I know how hard it is to find someone who is intellectually and physically challenging. Good luck to you and I wish I could meet you sometime. :) (But only if you get a hair cut :) )

Alex... you are a sweetheart. Thanks for your kind words and for one of the best dates of my life. I think if it weren't for the distance, you and I would have many more hang-outs (especially over Guitar Hero) and hilarious bantering. As far as the left brain/ right brain comment... hmmm... I see where you're coming from (given my occupation and interests mainly lie under the "artisan" category,) but had we ever gotten into discussions of literature and/ or World views, I think I may have (once again) set you "off balance." ;-) You're a gentleman and a good friend to such quality people. Let's double in New York soon! (This time, I'M playing the guitar.)
You got to kiss Krista!!!! AHHHH!!!! CONGRATS!!!! hahaha :-P

Think you are charming and adorable.... cutting the hair was a good idea... I know you think you may be giving up your individuality, but changing with the moment is good too. Most women like updated looks.... not LA looks---
Good luck with you search, I too am looking for something special after many yrs. of loving being single.... still will choose being single over being with another that is not adventurous, bright and flexible.....
Keep us updated...
