I'm Not in the Mood for the "Alex Show"

Africa shares the inspiration behind The Lipstick Junkies, why she was so nervous, and why she didn't Alex there.

By Africa Miranda

Episode 2. . .the argument that never ends!

I'm watching all of the drama unfold and I honestly can't believe it. Tribble and I were trying to talk and that clearly wasn't going to happen in the middle of the mele. What I've hated about this whole "trophy wife" foolishness is that it could never stay between Alex and Emily. All of these outside people were in the middle of a convo that should have just been between the two of them. And Alex's little girlfriend was totally out of line! You throw a drink on someone?!? Who does that? I heard glass break and I lost it. I was so upset and couldn't believe what was happening (in my face no less) and I wanted all of them gone. I'm in my full birthday regalia and I have to break up these two? I didn't want explanations or apologies. . .I just wanted them out. I was upset because neither of them stopped for a second to say "Hey it's Africa's birthday, let's just let it go until another time." I will be spending my next birthday somewhere quiet with plastic cups.

Drinks Start to Fly

I could watch little Jevon all day! Was there anyone else there in the studio? It's cool to get to watch Vawn, Jazze, and Gas work. . .and good to know my birthday blow-up resonated with Vawn.

I was still upset the next day but I appreciated that Emily called and wanted to see me. She could've just sent a text or even just apologized over the phone, but I'm glad that our friendship meant enough for her to do it in person. At the end of the day we all have moments when we aren't at our best, but our true character is shown in how we respond after the fact. I'm not one to hold a grudge and I'm glad that it is behind us. She's also made sure to follow up on her birthday promise to make sure Tribble gets my number so all is definitely forgiven.

Ladies and gentlemen meet The Lipstick Junkies! Megan, Tiffani, and Monica Josette are my sisters in song and in life. The Lipstick Junkies is a concept that Monica had for years and then when the three of us met we found we had so much in common and wanted to make this concept a reality. From this "The Lipstick Junkies featuring Black Caviar and The Ray of Sunshine" was born. Monica aka Moni-Jo is our writer/director and has toured with the likes of Santigold, Kelly Rowland, Coldplay and more. Megan is a former NFL Cheerleader and accomplished dancer and stage performer. After spending so much time helping other artists fulfill their dreams we decided to make our own happen. We were in one of our final staging rehearsals and my nerves were killing me! Not only was I not sure of my lines, I wasn't sure about choreography, and I definitely wasn't sure if we were going to have the turn out we wanted and needed. It was so important for this show to happen and be a success and I was so nervous! We are all kind of silly so it was good to break the tension and "SQUEEZE!" LOL! I was excited to tell the girls that Vawn was coming to our first show; while their response was hilarious, it wasn't surprising. I'm all for multitasking, but not when it comes to my business and personal life. It has never worked out for me in the past and I don't want to risk it now, especially with two creative and business partners. My Junkie sisters are always way more optimistic than me when it comes to my love life, LOL.

It was great to see Emily with her family and also how open she was about her adoption. Family isn't always defined by DNA and I'm glad that she's so blessed to have a family that loves and supports her the way they do.

Now Justin. . .He is definitely still into you Em! I definitely feel like there is some unfinished business between those two!

My show day. . .OMG!!! Whatever could go wrong, did. The venue was locked and empty and we found out on Facebook (Facebook?!?) that there was an emergency and they would be late letting us in. I could live with that if everything else went smoothly, but it absolutely did not. There was no real sound engineer, so the girls and I and our band were on stage with guests waiting outside trying to have some semblance of a soundcheck. Our only saving grace was Kelo Saunders, sound engineer for Jay-Z and Raphael Saadiq. Kelo was there as Monica's guest to support us at the show, NOT to work, but saw all of the problems and did his best to help us. THANK YOU KELO!!! We probably would've had to mime our performance if it wasn't for him!

Must Give Them a Show

Needless to say this all led to my "diva in distress" meltdown moment backstage. I was just getting over the worst flu of my life, had lost almost 10 pounds, and was questioning if I had made a huge mistake. We had an audience of not just family, but our industry peers in the audience and there is no "do over." Not to mention I had a reserved seat for Vawn right up front. . .lawd! But I pulled it all together and, of course, chicken makes everything better LOL!

We made it through our first show and I'm so proud of us and all of the hard work we put in. It is very rare in this business that women get to create and carry out their own vision. We have more work to do but I am a happy Junkie right now! Much love to our musicians The Good Times Brass Band and special guest drummer Lil John Roberts. They have played for everyone from Janet Jackson, Tyler Perry, Patti LaBelle, you name it. . .and now The Lipstick Junkies! We are so blessed to have them as a part of our musical family. Also a huge thank you to our other cast members Tony Hightower (Black Caviar) and Rae Evans (The Ray of Sunshine). . .phenomenal talents.

I was anxious to hear what Vawn thought of our first show. He has the best poker face that I've ever seen, so I didn't know what to expect. I was relieved to hear he liked it and elated that he wanted to help us develop the show even more. This is better than I could've hoped for! Now why do you want me to give you the rose Vawn??? This didn't really feel like a "work" moment, but he did smell amazing so I went with it. Ha!

The girls and I were definitely down to hang out after the show to hear more of Vawn's ideas. I wasn't expecting to see Alex, and since I hadn't heard a peep from her since my birthday party, she wasn't at the top of my list of favorite people at the moment. She was under the influence, and I really wasn't in the mood for the "Alex Show" after having such a great night. Then this whole forehead vein/older comment? Just a word to the wise, in your effort to attempt to shade me, don't shade your friend you came with. And last time I checked my face is on billboards, TV/movie screens, and in magazines. . .so this forehead vein has served me VERY well thank you. Try again on someone with a little less self-esteem. I don't believe at all that Alex came there to make peace. This whole exchange was just exhausting because she was wrong and if it wasn't an apology then there was nothing else for her to say to me.
