Rodger Berman

New York State Of Mind

Rodger Berman talks about the possibility of a bi-coastal future.

September 30, 2008

Continuing my tradition of giving my own name to each episode, I'm calling episode four, "New York State of Mind." As you may or may not know, Rachel and I are from the suburbs of NYC. After meeting in college (I was in grad school) at George Washington University in DC, we moved back to NYC and lived there for 11 years before moving out to La La land. We both absolutely love LA and the lifestyle that it offers. The sun, beach and laid-back attitude are hard to beat. For the past six years we couldn't dream of living anywhere else. Lately though, when we've gone back to NYC, I've noticed that Rachel is really starting to miss it.

I think the main reason is the intangible energy that NYC has. It makes you feel very "alive." I think it also makes you go a little crazy, as you can see from Rachel's shopping frenzy, which I am not happy about! I can't believe she's on camera telling Brad to lie to me! And then a minute later, he does lie (or at least plays dumb.) Marriage should be based on trust.

But I digress.

Truth be told, I miss NYC as well. My business partner and most of my employees are in NYC, and it seems that my business opportunities are there as well. If you caught the last episode, you can see that I have tons of friends there, whereas in LA, I really only have a few. As Rachel goes further down the road of brand extension, it seems that she needs to spend more time there. All the major fashion companies, designers, publishing and media are in NYC. So what does this all mean? I have a feeling we're going to become a little more bi-coastal in the not so distant future.

This last season, it looks like your relationship is on the rocks over the baby issue. At the same time, I don't like the snarky comments you make about Rachel to the camera. You both need to work on communicating to each other. Let's be realistic, how in the heck is Rachel going to have a child? She's too busy to spend any time with you, much less a baby. She doesn't feed herself, how's she going to feed a baby? Get with reality, dude. You are either not going to have kids or you're going to adopt, and you are going to do most of the work and complain about how she's never available. She is married to her job and a mother to her business. Period. Fashion is her passion, period. It is what it is. She's a workaholic.

Oh Rodge no husband knows how much their wife REEaly shops!!Well I guess you do now! Lol it is truly amazing to see what a great marriage you two have with the lifestyle you live! Best wishes to you both always you seem like two very sweet and devoted people!

Rodger,
I never thought I would find such a caring and doting husb.and such as yourself (that is excluding my husband, Nick!) Several years ago, we both had lucrative jobs, I shopped like Rachel, and he never said a word. Then...I came down with MS, could no longer work, the recession hit and his business closed. However, he still treats me like a queen, makes me tea in the morning, AFTER he's already made the coffee (sound familiar?), and takes wonderful care of both me and my mom. Both you and he make examples of what a great husband every man should be. Rachel and I should be very happy and proud to call you our own!! Thanks for your blogs, Rodger. Both they and the show really lift my spirits!!

Barbara (and Nick, too! I now have him addicted to your show!!!)

I can not get over how supportive each of you are in your partnership.. A great model of togetherness in today's so called "busy world"... Best to you , and keep up the good work!!1
