Rodger Berman

First-Time Father Jitters

Rodger explains why he let Jeremiah go and why Rachel's schedule made him so nervous.

Oct 11, 2011

I was hoping after the Oscars ended Rachel would really slow down until the baby came, but of course, two huge shoots came up that she couldn't turn down. It concerned me that by being on her feet all day she was over doing it and needed to be home with her feet up and resting -- but I think that was partially due to my first-time father jitters. All I care about is Rachel's well-being and our baby arriving healthy and happy. It is crazy to think about us being fully responsible for a person that needs us and looks to us for everything. . .and I really hope I will do a good job.

On top of my family worries, I had also been struggling to figure out where Jeremiah really fits within the company. While I think that he is a great guy and very talented interior designer, unfortunately with so much uncertainty about how things would be when the baby arrived, I made the tough decision that there wasn't a place for him with us right now.  But you never know what the future holds. . .

Rodger,

I first would like to say that I have loved Rache Zoe from the first time I saw the first episode. She is a great stylist and you guys are beautiful together. I am just posting this message because even though I understand that as a business man you have to watch the bottom line and your overhead expenses, I believe that Jeremiah was lead to believe that he had a future in your company. I was a little bit disappointed in both you and Rachel for misleading Jeremiah. He was put in a difficult situation by coming on-board, there was no real strategy or career path in your company for him and yet you decided to hire him. I felt he was used when he was assigned to decorate your house in less than 15 days, and once that was completed and there was nothing else for him to do you let him go. I do understand about bottom lines and overheads but I also believe there was poor planning from your side and Rachel. Jeremiah may land on his feet but if I were to be in his position I would be extremely upset for being mislead. I still love you guys but I would suggest you guys have a better strategic plan in the future because what you guys did to Jeremiah did not make you look good at all.

Rodger, What you did to Jeremiah was WRONG!!! You and your wife knew that his interests were to expand into fashion and you hired him with the knowledge that he had no experience. THEN, you have him design your entire house....ARE you kidding me? Did you pay him for his talents and experince? Or, did you take advantage of his talents and fire him! WRONG! P.S. Joey is a tool!

You should have thought of what you would do with Jeremiah when you hired him. Your a real jerk to fire him after he already proved himself. I think you guys are self indulgent, self cented jerks. What you did to Jeremiah was just wrong!!! You hired him and you should have kept the commitment you made. I'm done with the show and know why people turn against you when they leave!!! Grow up--you can afford to keep you word, you have plenty of money--until you make things right with Jeremiah (who you probably paid very little to design you house, and probably fired without any severence pay) you are going to eventualy have bad karma!!! If not now--it will happen eventually!!!

Grow up and start acting in integrity!!!

Very upset that Rodger fired Jeremiah. He did a great job but, when they brought Joey back from New York, they pushed him out. As soon as Joey showed up, they started to ignore Jeremiah. He gave his all and then some to decorate their home, showing them how dedicated he was. Rodger and Rachel thanked everyone for the move, Joey did nothing. Then they started using Joey on shoots, Jeremiah should have been on the Kim K. shoot. I thought Joey was only going to stay for 3 months, it appears that he is staying on.

I thought Rodger and Rachel were a class act. Not thinking that any more. Will never watch the show again.

I have watch this show for the longest time and I cant believe that you let a guy come in a design your home and that you both love it and then on tonight show you let him go. I am sure there was something that he could had done and as I have watched this show long enough to know that Rachel maybe having a child but I doubt it will slow her down. But for you to say that there was nothing in the business that you messed up....

Watching how Joey sabatoged Jerimiah gives me the creeps. I think you and Rachel are both blinded by his "kindness". Sorry, Rog ~ he's going to burn you guys worse than the previous two assistants!

You took complete advantage of Jerimiah's talents for your home and were a poor manager to just throw him in to a job that he was honest about in his interview and expect him to know what to do. He was willing to work his ass off for your company == quality folks don't come around like that often.

At least now I can rest easy knowing that I don't have to purchase any Zoe branded products. I would be creeped by out the image of Joey if I did! best of luck to you. I don't think I'll be watching any more this season.

I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like once the house was decorated, they didn't need Jeremiah anymore. We're they looking to get out of paying a decorator or what? Hope he didn't quit a real job for you.

I think the whole Jeramiah thing make you and Rachel both look like horrible business people. You totally used him with no real game plan in place. Im sure yu are worried about the bottom line Roger since you don't really seem to have a job other than riding on your wifes coat tails. She wears the pants in that family being that you are a kept man. This was the last episode I will watch. The BEST people on the show are all gone. I am team Taylor, Brad and now Jeramiah.

I must say after watching every episode since season 1, I have watched my last. The firing of Jeremiah by Rachel's husband was just one more ploy for him to do little, and when he can't make his wife take it easy, he goes searching for someone(Joey) to do his dirty work. I loved Jeremiah from the start, and he made that house a home in no time, and because Roger brought in Joey(to do things he couldn't make his wife do, or calm her down or whatever) and fired Jeremiah, after promising him something that was never delivered is doing exactly what the other two stylists, who left, then stabbed Rachel in the back did. I cannot watch that creepy, condescending Joey, and Roger who tries to act like he isn't Mrs. Rachel Zoe. Last episode for me! HOPE JEREMIAH GETS HIS OWN SHOW, NOW I'D WATCH THAT, HE AT LEAST SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND HARD WORD AND LOYALTY.

I have loved this show from the beginning but am very disappointed by Rodger and Rachel's decision to fire Jeremiah. I now wonder if Brad and Taylor were actually justified in the way they left the company. I love seeing the photo shoots and how styling works but I'm not sure I can watch The Rachel Zoe Project any longer.

Ditto David...I too have watched RZ since the beginning. Jeremiah was mislead and used, not to mention the taunting and teasing by most special BFF Joey. I was wishing Jeremiah could stay and Joey go

I have to agree. The occupy wall street people should occupy your front lawn. He practically killed himself to style your house and you thank him by letting him go? What is wrong with you people?

Rachel could have sold two or three of her vintage pieces and paid his salary until he was able to get a home line together. You guys screwed him MAYJORLEY.

It is terrible that Jeremiah who worked so hard was so unceremoniously fired. I agree with the previous comment that Jeremiah will land on his feet but it is very clear that Rodger is an ineffective manager. Jeremiah was right when he felt that he was being cold shouldered. It is very obvious that Joey is very good at positioning himself to get the most exposure and letting Jeremiah do all the hard work. He is also good at sidelining him. But, Joey is Brad in the making and Rodger and Rachel Zoe better watch out.

I AGREE WITH DAVID JIRON!!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED! AND JOEY IS JUST SO FULL OF HIMSELF THAT I THINK HE HAD A LOT TO DO WITH THE WAY RACHEL TREATED JEREMIAH!! JOET JUST GO BACK TO NEW YORK!!!

I am an owner of a 20 year old business and too understand the bottom line, however I would have never done what you did to Jeremiah. I recognize that we do not see your day to day operations but it too was obvious to me that Jeremiah was led to believe he was going to be given an opportunity to learn the styling side of the business to replace Brad. Then out of the blue, Joey becomes master of all (isn't he a make-up artist?) and manipulates his way to becoming Brad's replacement. If I were Jeremiah, I would be sending you a nice bill for designing the house. I would also take that drive and energy right to another company that will nurture and appreciate it. A very wise mentor told me 20 years ago, "How you treat your employees will determine how successful you will be". Be fair to the next person you hire. I've enjoyed the series, but tonite's show has soured my feelings.

I AGREED WITH DAVID! I THINK RACHEL AND JOEY MISTREATED JEREMIAH! IAM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! I THINK JOEY WAS THE CAUSE OF THE WAY HE WAS TREATED!! ( joey is just sooo full of hinself! go back to new york and the show will be fun to watch again!) GIVE JEREMIAH ANOTHER CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was very sad to see Jeremiah go tonight! From the beginning he showed lots of passion and enthusiam and was determined to prove himself. Unfortunately, he ended up being the third wheel to Rachel and her bestie/hairstylist Joey. Deciding if there is room for someone in a company or not should happen BEFORE the hiring process. Very disappointing! BAD MOVE!

I agree that you guys did not handle the situation with Jeremiah very well. Also, Joey was pretty snarky towards him and seemed to be looking to find fault with him. It made me think twice about Joey's character.

wow!! I have to agree with the other person that commented earlier...you and Rachel were never "CLEAR" on Jeremiah's job description and kept him on a illusion of a career with Zoe Inc...the guy proved himself over and over again, and I agree the Home Project in 15 days was over the top, and the guy delivered and came through...who else could do that? I don't know, I think he wasn't given a real shot at "styling" and only kept in the hindsight for "interior design"..but at least he got exposure on the show, and he is talented and will do well,...still love you and Rachel and show...will miss Jeremiah.

It doesn't feel good being discarded, and in tonight's episode it seems like that's exactly what happened to Jeremiah. If he was mislead into believing that he had a future with the company, then the viewers at home were as well. I can only hope he lands on his feet and that you all do better by the people you hire in the future.

I agree with David Jiron, I think Jeremiah was hired under false pretenses. Hiring him as a "stylist" to have him decorate Rachel's house and then let him go seems rude and pretentious. The expectations set upon him were unrealistic, yet he went above and beyond and made Rachel and Roger's house a home for them before they ever stepped foot inside. I feel once again Bravo has let their reality stars let fame go to their head.

You shouldn't have hired Jeremiah in the first place! The girl that Rachel interviewed (I think her name was Katie) had retail experience, and showroom contacts, but Rachel didn't want that.

Rachel wanted another cute boy to replace Brad. Once Joey agreed to disrupt his life and move to LA to babysit Rachel, she didn't need Jeremiah anymore.

I sincerely hope that since having baby Skyler Rachel will look at her job with more focus, and not play with people the way she did with Jeremiah.

I think you Missed the bigger opportunity by not hiring the girl that came In for the job!

Rodger, You totally deceived Jerimiah into thinking he had a future with "Rachel Zoe". You knew his experience when you hired him. He worked his butt off trying to do anything and everything he could do to show he would be a great employee. It was totally unfair that your ruined his career chances by bringing Joey to California, (and by the way giving him your car in the process). Even though Rachel loves Joey, he's a back-stabbing, self-centered individual who is constantly begging for compliments and pushing his way into every styling situation that comes available. He was so cold-hearted and back-stabbing toward Jerimiah. Instead of helping him, he was constantly condemning all of Jerimiah's hard work and making him feel more insecure than he already was. It was so obvious Joey was doing his best to get Jerimiah out of the way. Makes you wonder, if he has that type of deceitful attitude toward Jerimiah, (whom he should have been helping), what's to prevent him from turning against you and Rachel, (could there possibly be another Brad in the makings?). Joey should be sent back to New York and Jerimiah should have been allowed to stay in the job that you promised him. You knew his credentials when you hired him and inferred he would be trained but you reneged on your end of the bargain. This was an extremely disappointing act on your part making it difficult to have any respect for you. By the way, based on the "vote questionnarie" on your website, I see 89% of your viewers feel the same way I do.

The way Jeremiah was treated was probably the worst thing I've ever seen on TV. Even if you have to fire someone, you let them leave with their dignity and you didn't even allow him to do that. Then had the nerve to be defensive when questioned about your piss poor planning and management in regards to his employment. It's a recession who wants to be without a job? So, basically you used Jeremiah to design your home and once he was finished with that you had no more use for him. I see why Taylor and Brad had no problems screwing you over. You two are horrible people, the absolute lowest of the low and that's saying a lot on Bravo.

I was saddened to see Jeremiah dismissed, as well as how it was done. The actual dismissal felt a bit abrupt and cruel. The company demands much from their employees, but what is given in return seems questionable. On the show, I found Jeremiah to be the only member of the staff interesting and watchable. The rest of the remaining staff, well, rather unlikable. I am sad, for after watching the show from the beginning, I am finding little reason to continue watching it.

I agree. Very unprofessional and I think you made a fool out of Jeremiah. I didn't think you would actually let him go. Once the words came out of your mouth I changed the channel and have decided that I won't be watching this show anymore. For some reason, I am really upset. I don't know why I feel this way but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

I would agree with the prior comment, but I find it hard to be as nice. After reading your blog Rodger it calmed me down a bit, but as far as what you said to Jeremiah you didn't come across to him as if there were any opportunities for him in the future. As a viewer it appeared that Jeremiah was used and abused by you and Rachael and not treated too nice by anyone except Jordon. While I realize you didn't intentionally hire him to decorate your house in 15 days, but when you needed someone for that job and asked him, he was dedicated to you both to help you out with that project even though that is not what he wanted to be doing or was hired to do. And for his dedication and wanting to prove himself, he worked his tail off. Usually when an employee goes the extra 110 miles for their employer, they don't get fired. Jeremiah proved can be given a job, work independently , make design decisions, a million of them, and meet an unbelievable deadline and pleasing the client with every independent decision. He worked around the clock and you all treated him like crap. Maybe now it is all becoming clear as to maybe why Taylor and Brad weren't able to show your company any loyalty when they left . Were they were treated just as badly? You can't treat good hard working people like you treated Jeremiah and not expect to get bad Karma. So either your Karma came early with Taylor and Brad or you deserved that Karma and there is more to come. I have watched your show since the beginning and have always rooted for you and Rachael, but after seeing what and how you let Jeremiah go, it makes me feel ill. I am just part of the audience, this may be tv , but it is realty tv! If you continue to treat people like this you may not have an audience or anyone to buy your future lines of clothing. It is unacceptable.

one that involved a million decisions on style and deadlines , he gets it done and the first thing Rachael

I hope that by next weeks episode you do "know'. Jeremiah is the most dynamic assistant you've ever featured on the show. Taylor was a freak, Brad was kind of adorable but Jeremiah really has "it" in a way that nobody else has. Joey I just don't get. He has his ugly little rat nose straight up Rachel's patouti, but she seems to love it. Next to Joey, Jeremiah looks like the whole (professional and mature) package. Perhaps too much so for the show as he is just gay enough but not too, too exageratedly so, interestingly handsome, talented and level headed. Maybe too much actual wattage for the group. I'm sure he'll find something great out there because he obviously has plenty to offer and the exposure from the show sure hasn't hurt but GEEZ. Give the guy a chance. He decorated your house in two weeks and you freakin loved it! The two new women you have on the show seem incredibly professional and together and that is nice to see. Good hiring! Bad firing!

David expresses my feelings exactly. Jeremiah was misled and both Rachel and Rodger are very self-centered and disingenious. Shame on both of you for playing with someone's life so cavalierly.

i believe you hired him to have free decorator ffor your house rachel said you be bad cop you both were bad cop no both were bad human beings not nice what you did to jeramiah i always watched the show because of the type of people you potrayed yourself to be but guess the curtain came back and your true colors were revealed he was hired under the impression it was a permanent position i believe you just used to him to decorate your has for free shame on you and rachel both am canceling my QVC when to watch and will not ever buy anything else of hers again

Rodger,

I have to agree somewhat with the above e-mail. Of course we all know its editing, etc. however the one thing I can say after watching virtually every season of this show is - you guys don't manage people very well. Again, could be editing but that is always what it appears to be like on screen. I ADORE you, the show and Rachel. I actually wasn't a huge fan of Jeremiah or at the very least the way he was edited. It seemed like he JUST started working there and then was like oh by the way I want to run your home division - that's just youth I suppose. But Rodger, you guys hired the guy I mean - I understand having a child is a big deal but you don't just hire people w/out a clear purpose or job description - yes even in entertainment and yes even in your business. It's just bad form. And mismanagement is just mismanagement. I don't think anyone is owed anything, but the way the show is edited, I see a lot of people working very hard for you guys , and a lack of focus for your employees. This year does seem better - I have to admit - because you've taken the company to another level and have professionals in there running things. At the end of the day, again it's probably mostly editing so we'll never know the true story. And again, I'm not a fan of this guys. I found him annoying to watch! BUT I did feel for him and no not just he got fired but because he really wasn't hired for a specific reason other than for you guys to have bodies around just in case. That's not what he was promised - go back and watch the tape. If you're in that field people would kill to work for Rachel - but you guys do need to be responsible bosses too. Stop hiring boys because they're pretty, and if so get someone hotter. LOL.

I agree with David Jiron's comments. You guys just used Jeremiah to design your new house, pick up food and then let him go just like that. From the start you know he has no fashion styling experience but Rachel still hires him. No one help him out, i think your staff intentionally turn their heads & backs so eventually you will fire HiM. Not a very smart move. I wish Jeremiah will just go and work for Jeff Lewis, i think he will be treated well and humanely.

Just got done watching the show I must say I'm quite disappointed that Jeremiah got let go. He was a good addition to the show and had major talent. I think he got strung along and got screwed over in the end. He had style and was willing to learn and try something new. Just look at how well he did rachels house. Bottom lime is he was a hard worker and had his own talent and btw he sure beats having brad on the show talk about a bore fest. Bring back miah so he can prove he can do the job.

Um, he was let go because he was never the right candidate for the job in the first place! Rodger was trying to prevent RAchel from hiring him and wanted to keep looking for a better fit for the company. Hiring a good looking gay man doesn't seem to work for RAchel for obvious reasons. It is a shame that she trusts Joey so much, because he is evil too. He will be off styling some of her clients in a few years or less, so maybe she will learn someday. Joey is the bad guy and planted in Jeremiah's head that he should be worried about his job, because he is a bad person. The show made Jeremiah to look like this jealous guy who feels left out from everything, but it is Joey who wanted it to be this way. There should only be women on RAchel's team and Rodger should be the one hiring behind Rachel's back. She is incapable of reading a good person from a bad person and just because a good looking gay man is coming in for an interview is no reason to hire him. It is nice that they got their home decorated though, and I don't think they were using him for that sole purpose, but he was hired on Rachel's impulse because she thought he was good looking and that isn't the answer to make her business thrive. Hire a competent woman who knows fashion and isn't looking to be in the limelight and who doesn't want the pressure of being on her own and this drama will end.

I am beyond disappointed in your managerial skill toward Jeremiah. It was heartless and cold.

I love the show and Rachel but I do not agree with firing Jeremiah. He was ACTUALLY watch-able and talented! He was such a hard worker and got your house decorated with such a short deadline.

Joey, on the other hand, is a SNAKE and totally useless. I think he is SO annoying and the way he sucks up to Rachel is disgusting. I don't think he contributes much to your company AT ALL. Taylor and Brad were at least watchable.

I agree with many of the other viewers about Jeremiah. He was used then tossed. It was nice to see a real person and not an ass kisser like Joey, he is extremely annoying. I hope that if you ask Jeremiah in the future to do the home like he turns you down. Karma is a bitch.

The reality is ...roger and rachel knew they would be moving in to a house pending the baby's arrivial. Jereimah was hired for the sole purpose of using his talent as a decorator . They never had any intention of training him as a sylist . Joey fits perfectly in their lifestyle as a kiss up and yes man feeding and stroking their egos every day. Only ...wait for the plot ...he will slowly ..drip by drip ...come between Rachel and Roger and we will be hearing of a divorce in the future. Rachel already dismisses Roger at every turn. And finally when LA gets a group of new, young , talented stylists ...Rachel albeit rich will be sitting at home getting botox while Joey keeps telling how maj her life is. I for one am tuning out. How bananas is that .

Rodger, what is it that you DO at RZ, Inc? Why would you hire someone without a clear idea of what his role would be to then turn around and fire him because he does not have a clear role? Also, I am SO tired of you constantly complaining about how tired and stressed you are. Nobody complains more than you on the show. Last year you complained that you did not have any kids. This year you are complaining that you have one on the way and it is creating stress and you are tired. Are you ever happy Rodger and perhaps you should leave the managing of RZ, Inc. to someone more professional and qualified.

Yeah i am sure Jeremiah will be back, when you need someone you can use to work their ass off to decorate your babies room and then throw to the side because instead of kissing ass they arhe is beinge being professional and giving it his all, but I guess that is just how things go in Rachel's world.I mean he was the only person who stayed and worked to make your house a home, Joey showed up for like 20 minutes to criticize but had no problem accepting credit and everyone else just came dropped the boxes off and left. You and racheal are ridiculous and trying to build a brand with people who are lazy is going to end in disaster at the end of the day. Ohh and I wont be shocked when Joey does the same thing Brad did because trust me for him its all about the fame.

It did not appear that Jeremiah knew this was just going to be a temporary job. Shame on you both for using and misleading him! And what about Joey? His catty attitude makes it very hard to see why Rachel is so enamored with him.

You owe Jeremiah for decorating your new home /Pay up gerks !

I will definitely stop watching after last night...

Pathetic!!!

First Best of wishes for the new BABY ~ That said I was do sad & agree with ALL above posts regarding Jeremiah ~ I felt as if he was used & I am seeing a side of you both that only comes with the rise of Reality TV Zone ~ I hope that things turn around because this may be my last season! WOW Joey & Ms. ZOE came across like mean school girls ~ Jeremiah was sure useful when you need a FREE home decorator in TWO weeks ~ Sad Very Sad Janice Ca.....

Rachel Zoe used to be my favorite reality show to watch but after the last episode, I will no longer support this show. Jeremiah should have been treated with more respect. I am very disappointed.

You and Rachel handeled the whole Jeremiah issue wrong.....and you know it. Hopefully ALL of you have apologized to him, but I somehow doubt it.

Roger fired Jeremiah over that horrible Joey? Jeremiah had more taste in his little finger than makeup artist Joey could ever hope to achieve in a lifetime. Joey knew it, which is why he sabotaged Jeremiah at every turn.

Bravo miscalculated the fans' reactions big time, and so did Rachel and Roger. I will no longer be watching this show.

It was nice to see you finally have some fun and enjoy Vegas because it seems that you hardly get to have any enjoyment. Seeing you both this season get a bigger house, nicer cars, more staff, bigger work space seemed to have given you both bigger heads and forgot your emotional attachments to people. Specifically Jeremiah...he was wiling to dedicate himself to you both and so eager to prove himself to you both...and you never, ever gave him a chance. I guess when you have dollar signs for eyeballs, its gets easy to throw away the little people....very sad and its too bad because I was hoping that you and Rachel would stay grounded with your increased wealth but you haven't. Why haven't you both noticed how far Joey's got his nose up in Rachel's behind?

Both you and Rachel should be embarassed for the way you used and then discarded Jeremiah. Shameful.
