Welcome back RHBH-ers!
Before I answer questions from last week, I want to talk a little about this week's episode.
Almost a year ago, when I first was hired onto RHBH, my first goal was to tell stories that capture the full scope of life. As I've stated before, reality shows thrive on conflict, and certainly the episode about Camille's dinner party will go down as a classic. But I also knew we couldn't do episodes like that every week. To me, it just becomes unrealistic. People don't fight all the time. In real life, people have good times, bad times, emotional times, and hopeful times. My goal was to tell all of those stories.
This week's episode, 112, is a favorite of mine. And yes, I know, I say that each week, but it's honestly how I judge to see if I'm doing a good job. If I haven't fallen in love a little bit with an episode, there's definitely a problem.
I like 112 because it's different. There's no fighting. No grudges. But there's a whole lot of emotion. It was also an episode a long time coming. At the beginning of any season of a docu-drama style reality show (as opposed to a competition show like Survivor), I sit down with the cast and talk to them about what events are coming up in their lives. Among the many things Kyle told me was about her eldest daughter graduating from college toward the end of our shooting schedule. I immediately put it on our "story board," which is a bulletin board of events that we will probably want to shoot.
But as I said, it was months away, so I kind of put it on the back burner. That is, until Kyle's very first interview. During the regular season, my producers conduct the interviews, but I show up on set to shadow them to make sure everything goes well. The first few questions are always relatively simple, allowing the cast to ease into the process. My Senior Producer Brenda Coston was conducting the interview and literally on the third or fourth question, asked Kyle to tell her about Farrah. Kyle barely got three words out when she burst into tears. It took her a few minutes before she could explain that all the emotion was about Farrah's college graduation. Not only was she Kyle's oldest child, she was going to be the first person in the Richards-Hilton family to graduate and that meant a huge deal to Kyle.
Ah, this wasn't just going to be an ordinary graduation story. But as I said, it was still three months away.
what is the name of the artist and song playing in the background on the 1/7/13 episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills when Brandi is finished talking to Scheana and then the show transitions over to Vanderpump Rules and Brandi walks over to talk to Lisa? There is a female singing in the background. Love the song and have been trying to find the artist and song.
Camille was downright likeable on "Watch What Happens Live"... if she comes back for a second season, can we see that Camille rather than psycho Camille?
You're right. I have already softened towards Camille and I really feel for what she is going thru. I was one of the biggest anti-Camilles fans out there. I feel terrible and left an apology and encouragement on her Bravo blog. Since you print so few comments, I'm asking you to please make sure that my apology makes it to her blog. I would be very appreciative.
Love your blog and all the insight. I thought the scene shot in NY with Camille and Kelsey were EXTREMELY AWKWARD not to mention perplexing to watch. Did it seem that way to you too?
I enjoy learning from these women. I am basically a quiet, introspective woman. I am a professional, have been married for 35 years, am the mother of a well educated and successful young 28 year old woman and consider myself a person of dignity, but I do enjoy the complexity of the human experience and that is what these shows allow us to see. It takes a special kind of person to put their life on the air and have others judge them. Koodos for these woman who have the guts to do just that, especially since people like me, who are basically introverts, could never do this. Thanks for sharing with us.
Best regards, Rachel Wisdom
I really want to know more about the interview process. How often do you interview the ladies? Are they allowed to not answer questions if they don't want to? I've also noticed that they will be wearing the same outfit that they wore in previous episodes (for interviews), but they answer questions like it was the same day, or before the event happened. How does that work?
Mine is less a question than it is a suggestion. I really enjoy your blog, giving us some "behind the scenes" information. Why doesn't Bravo just do a special episode of behind the scenes of the Real Housewives....it could be of all of the shows. This would help us see how scenes are set up, how it all works, the interviews, the timing of it all. I think it would be great for all of us and for the haters of reality television who insist these shows are partially scripted and much more directed than reality. I for one would love to see it. You could have different housewives give their imput of what happens behind the scenes...and even have some of the original Orange County housewives talk about how the show has evolved from the first season of that franchise until now. If you need a consultant on ideas..I'd be more than welcome to help...ha ha. I just think it would be a great Bravo special.
Since the RH franchise has aired, I'm really happy that one of the producers has commented on the epsidoes. Thank you! Do you think this will happen on the other shows?
I have some observations about editing of this show:
How many cameras do you use? At the "dinner from hell" there were nine guests yet the camera was conveniently there to catch Camille's reaction after comments from some of the other guests. How did you know to focus on her?
Events must not be shown in chronological order. Kyle and Taylor wore the same outfits in Episode 7 while they had drinks at a different location.
At the tennis party Kyle said the "white party" was the next night. Interesting how Camille got bronchitis over night (hmmm).
I love RHOBH I never thought I would but Im addicted lol. Anyways I've been on many sites and twitter and so many have the same question as me. We all love Adrienne and Paul you can relate to them. Their funny and cute as a couple and very much family oriented. And as of Adrienne shes a big role model to young women and women in all. Many would love to see them get a spin off show would bravo be up for that like Bethany got. I think it be a great idea
I agree, Dave, while Camille is definitely not my favorite by any stretch, I did feel great sympathy for her when she was pondering the words of the dance instructor, "smile through the pain." You guys have done a fabulous job of shooting and editing this show.
Dave, I'm sorry but it is bad that the Grammer children will have to go through those "Where's my dad?" and other moments like that. But where is the cheering, oh I hate to see that, attitude for the rest of the thousands of single mothers that have, are still and will yet to go through those phases? Camille is the epitome of the Countess' "Monney Can't Buy You Class" but money can certainly help through the rough times. The Grammer children will probably see more of their parents than before the divorce. At least at first both will want to one up each other on "look what I'm doing for our kids" category. Let's hope they are both truthful when they say they want to put their children first.
As a huge fan of the show & each of the wives for different reasons, it's been challenging to see it as reality when the continuity is broken. I don't see it so much as "staged" as I do an editing overlook. For example, Adrienne shopping with Paul wearing exactly what they did early in the season out to lunch. Or Lisa's on-again-off again hat when they went up to Santa Barbara. Lastly, when Taylor moaned to Kyle (the first time) a few eps back, they had on exactly what they wore to this eps opening scene where we're led to believe they had drinks after Lisa left. These women have way too much money to knowingly wear the same clothes repeatedly during filming. Otherwise, amazing job & look forward to the finale! Xo
You are absolutely right, Show Some Love. I enjoy reading your blog and the background you provide. I totally get why you say you love all the women because you know them personally. We, the viewers, do not and only know what we see each week. People’s opinion of the cast members are jaded by their favorites. The brutal bashing comments are uncalled for especially the ones about Camille’s and Adrienne’s marriage. Nobody knows what goes on in other people’s marriage. Would you consider being a guest on WWHL with Andy?
On the reuion show do we find out why there is so much deep rooted animosity between Kyle and Kim? We all see that they are close and love each other very much, however, on the flip side... Pow! They go at it! Poor Kim seems like the receiver of Kyle's anger... How come?
Love to both of them.
I agree that a "Behind the Scenes" episode would be a fantastic and great Bonus Bravo Special!!!!!! .........
Hi Dave, I think that Camille would have been a popular housewife if Taylor would have kept her mouth shut in NYC. Not a fan of Taylor !!!!
Hi Dave - My question is to why the Hilton's seem to not show up at any main family events, and then break Kyle's heart by not coming to the graduation?!? Could it just be because they do not want to be on the show in any way? With Paris creating her career with reality TV, I find it very odd that they would not make appearances on the show with their favorite aunts?? They have not been with Kim or Kyle at any family functions. Is there a backstory we are not hearing about or maybe appearance fees are too high? Kyle always says she is so mad she was left with the burden of the family....Confused!!! Love the show, it is tops for me in the RH world!
I have never been a Real Housewives fan until I read an interview that you did with the Sacramento Magazine. I was fascinated with the description that you gave of each of the women. You made them seem three dimensional rather than just a spoiled rich women and since I watched the first episode, I became hooked.
After you filmed the last episode, did you have a cast party with the Real Housewives? And if you did, did you wish that the cameras were rolling then. I'm sure there must have been some interesting stuff there too!
Your blog is SO enjoyable, thank you!! I read Andy's tweet that the reunion took a long time to tape. Is there a chance that we'll get to see more than one hour of the reunion? Those shows are a blast to watch and I loved it when we began to see multiple reunion episodes. Thanks for taking the time to share such interesting information with us.
Still difficult to cut Camille slack... despite the outpouring of her very public and humiliating divorce. She garners no sympathy because she said horrendous things about Kyle and especially Kyle's husband, which was BEFORE she got wind of her husband's intent to end the marriage. That said, no one wishes such marital tragedy to anyone. Everyone is clear about that! And along those lines....no one ever says the kinds of things Camille has said on the show about someone else's marriage....let's be clear about that, too!! Sorry, Dave, NO PASS FOR CAMILLE.
Can we please have more of Kim? I love her , she is the best of them all ! I hope you grilled the other ladies, esp Kyle and Taylor, for their rude treatment of Kim during the show.
What I cannot understand is that viewers are cutting Camille up for the comments that she makes during her interview, but has wrote nothing at all about Kyle who cursed Camille out and called her so many names to her face. The worse that Camille has called Kyle is jealous and when the two of them were arguing she didn't get loud, curse or disrespectful, yet, everyone is on Team Kyle! I just don't understand it.
Has anyone ever thought of having the single housewives on Millionaire Matchmaker? Patti should set Kim up!
From a Loyal Fan-PLEASE read and answer my question! :)
My question is something I've always wanted to know-and never fully understood-about the production aspect of RHBH (and, actually, it pertains to all of the Housewives shows). How exactly do you conduct the interviews?? Obviously, each cast member does a few separate ones (hence the different outfits :), but do you do them all AFTER shooting has wrapped? The reason it confuses me is because if you DO do them after shooting has finished, and each housewife already knows what's happened or hasn't happened, how are the producers and/or the housewives able to...make it seem as though they are talking to the audience AS the events are happening? It's difficult to word this properly, so here is a perfect example: Camille. Camille talks in her interviews, from the START of the show, about her seemingly normal, healthy relationship with Kelsey...yet, as the viewers find out down the road, that was not the case--and she knew that the whole time, I guess? Hope you can clear that up for me :). And we all continue to appreciate your talent!
Well Dave, I just spent entirely too much time reading your blog (and the lady's) but I've been thoroughly entertained so I guess it wasn't a waste. Now I'm totally addicted and can't wait to read what you write next! So here's something I've always wondered... First, how are the casts created? Do producers hear about a group of women and contact them to be on the show? Do the women initiate the contact because they want to be on the show? Some of the women know each other better than others. How does this all work? And by the way, this is my favorite show in the series both because of the cast and it's well done. My second question is, do the women have any say in their opening line played every week during the title? Are they ever upset with what is played over and over again?
Thanks for the blog. Can't wait for next week!
Emily, I noticed that too. It appears to me that the interviews are done after filming is completed for the entire season. That would explain why the ladies are wearing the same outfit throughout the interviews over the entire episodes.
My question is just the same as LaLaLi's. It seems that we always seem to see the housewives in a confessional talking about a situation, and then a few episodes later they are talking about a situation that happened much later but in the SAME outfit. So when are the interviews conducted? And how many are there? It seems as though they would be much more biased as the season continues talking about previous events. Although, maybe thats the point?
One silly question...what is the type/name of the pink champagne that is so often served? Looks delicious!!!
As someone else said, LONGER Reunion shows! I think it was Camille who said it was a long 8 hour day, why condense it to just two-hours? (one hour each show). Anyway, the editing is somewhat wacky on HW's. Its like you hit the pause button, then put the camera on ones face with a very bizarre reaction. Just let the camera roll.
Huge fan! One question--what is it exactly that Taylor does for work? She's mentioned a few times how she works but I don't remember ever seeing it introduced in the beginning of the season.
Jordynn25: I totally agree w/ you! I didn't think I'd get hooked on this show either. I was taken by ems to the er had ergen surg on 10/28, the day before my bro's funeral in SA, TX..which we were supposed to be..healthy one day, graveley ill the next. But I began watching the show as I flicked the channels..my 1st "Love" of RHOBH began. I think that Adrienne is EXTREMEMLY level-headed! I ADORE her! I like the other cast members individually different in their own ways: Lisa is just too cute, makes some since! I'm glad they had Cedric move out, long over-due. Taylor..I feel for her..she's sweet, but can't figure it out. Camille, I didn't like..but I feel sorry for her! Kyle, torn between faithful to her sister & friends
I love the White party... that was the best show. Fact that there wasn't no drama was great. I agree with Kim...a man should call you. Seem the man isn't not wanting to be with Kim. Quit, pushing it!!
Like so many, I quickly became hooked on the RHOBH. I agree that Taylor is playing both sides. She tries too hard to be everyones friend and the result is a lot of misunderstandings and idol gossip. Furthermore, Taylor was out of line the way she attached Kim at her birthday party. Again, all the ladies were discussing Camile at the airport. Taylor should have accespted responsibility for participating in the gossip and stayed quiet. She added to the controversy by remaining behind with Camille and discussing the coversations at the airport, thus making the situation even worse.
I find it rediculous that Kyle was so explosive at the NYC dinner. The high road and classier response to Camile's acusation would have been to acknowledge that she may have said the comment and simply appoligize. Kyle tends to be explosive in every situation and quick to interject her opinions and superiority over anyone who disagrees with her. She appears very defensive, has to get the last word in, and assumes that she is always right. She needs to learn how to listen and think before offering a comment or opinion. Based on everything I viewed, Kyle has a lot of anger issues. Not just with Kim, but with Camille. Kyle is always criticle and mean spirited toward Kim.
Loved the show. Watching these women make me reflect on the way I interact with my firends and colleagues. We should all act as if a camera were taping our words and actions. How much better would civility in this country be?
Please, please, please make the background music tracks from "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" available for purchase on iTunes! Best ever!!!
Please help. I get all notifications via Bravo e-mail but when I get to this site I get a futuristic robot voice pleasantly telling me that the video is currently unavailable. I know it's because I am a Canadian living in Canada ... but we are fans too. I can understand protecting episodes until they officially air in Canada but the old ones? Thankyou, faithful viewer.
