BH Producer Dave Rupel discusses the White Party fallout, the ladies' trip to Hawaii, and thanks the hardworking crew.

Jan 3, 20120

On to viewer questions from the previous episode.

Q: RHOBHfan commented she is frustrated that some people claim all reality TV is scripted.
A: I can't speak for all reality shows, but RHOBH is definitely not. Although Kim, Kyle, and Lisa have acted in the past, they are living their real lives in front of our cameras -- as is everyone on our show. With all that has happened this year on our show, it is difficult to see how anyone could think it could be scripted.

Q: Several viewers questioned the veracity of Taylor's "lost" phone. NC, NJ wondered what the content of Kyle's messages to Taylor were and if Taylor then deliberately "lost" her phone.
A: I can vouch for the truth of Taylor's lost phone. Our crew had been trying to reach Taylor for days to confirm she was attending the White Party to no avail. As far as what Kyle texted Taylor, I believe it was all along the lines of "Call me ASAP."

Q: HauteCoco had two questions. 1. Was Russell removing his microphone in the limo? 2. Do the ladies always ride in vehicles with hired drivers?
A: Yes, Russell was indeed removing his microphone in the limo. That is why our sound operators always have boom mics to capture un-microphoned people or people who remove theirs. The ladies usually take a limo service whenever they are attending events that provide alcohol. We sometimes shoot in their cars (Kim on the way to Paul's office, for example.) But if alcohol is served, everyone obviously avoids drinking and driving.

How come the cameras were NEVER in Taylor and Russell's house?

I just hope at the reunion the question is asked to Kyle, why does she focus so much on Kim. I understand they are close and her love for sister, I get it! What I don't get is why at her Husband's birthday dinner with guest, does she feel it is appropriate to bring up Kim's tardiness. Yes Kim has lack of respect for others, we get that too. But seriously, Kyle - it was so useless to make the entire dinner party feel the constant friction between you two siblings. I mean it gets old. Make your decision how you will react or not react and stick with it, but spare others of the constant drama. Kyle is one of my favorite ladies, but you make things worse, not better.

This is actually to Kyle, I am also a younger sister to an addict. While it is very frustrating and sometimes sad and scary watching them self destruct, we as the more "observant" sibling sometimes have to let them fail. I have seen things that would make most crumble as I am sure you have as well. Be there when she needs you but keep her at arms length. Good job on calling out her bs but don't let it bring you down too. Let Kim, as hard as it is, make her own mistakes and deal with the consequences.

Great Update Dave!

I have enjoyed absolutely every ep. From my point of view, the show has been back filling all the drama that took place when the info about Taylor and Russell's split went public. It also gives tiny clues of the level of emotional trauma that was also going on at the time.

I have a question for Kyle. While at Kyle's "White Party", Kim & Kyle had a interaction in the hall about how Kim chose to make that party her "Not only can I now handle conflict, I am now "Kim"; Conflict Hunter" coming out moment. Kyle, why didn't you "shut her down" by telling her that she had plenty of time before the party to express her feelings and that one more day wasn't going to kill her?

It appears that several viewers share my point of view. This past show was great sans Kim and Taylor. Bravo made a cogent dismissal of the suggestion of Heidi Montag being on the show for the same reason viewers are pushing back on Kim and Taylor. Protect your show from being low brow.

You have the best RH franchise but it could be so much more with some tweaking. Lisa and Brandi are fabulous for comedy, Kyle is great TV - having a though season but will be herself next year. Camille will be happier and less edited. Dana hopefully is packaged with Taylor's diminished or deleted roll. Adriane is always awesome but needs more interaction . Possibly bring on another Adrienne friend - Brandi was a recruit of hers. This season was rough for the obvious challenges but onward and upward. Congrats on your show!!! Pip Pip Bonnie

I know Kim was admitted to rehab, but what I'll say has nothing to do with her alcohol issues. I think Kyle needs to let Kim be Kim and stop assuming that she knows how Kim feels because that only puts more unnecessary pressure on Kim. I have sisters, and it bothers me a lot when my sisters talk to me as if I can't think for myself. Kim is an adult, so Kyle needs to back off. There is a reason why Kim felt uncomfortable sharing parts of her life with Kyle. Kyle automatically jumps to conclusions, assuming all the time that she knows what's best for Kim. It makes Kim seem like a child, which is unfair to her. It's not fair that she's put in a position where she has to get Kyle's approval to live her life. It's Kim's life. She can live it anyway she wants. When she asks for help, Kyle may then comfort her. However, asking for help doesn't warrant judgement either.

Kyle, please do both of you a favor and let your sister be responsible for herself. Love sometimes means letting people make their own mistakes. It's hard, but Kim needs her independence and she can't get that with you hovering over her shoulders at every turn.

I am getting really tired of Taylor. I am sorry that her husband committed suicide, however she is depressing to watch. Brandi and Dana are also depressing to watch. Replace Taylor with someone that actually brings entertainment to the show along with a little class, not the high school poor girl theatrics that Taylor contributes.

BH Producers, Just a little addendum to prior post..How about adding Psychic/Psycho from Camille's dinner party from hell was it? what a hoot that would be...What a GOD complex...With the right amount of booze in her.....Or if she just felt like impressing us with her bag of tricks. How's Russell doing? I would surely listen to her version of Russell's thoughts/ plight from beyond..What a scoop..& entertaining as Hell. AHHHHH

Right up front - Kim is the real star of this show. "Losing" her, as has been suggested would be a huge mistake. She is the one with true star power, and that's what makes BH unique from the rest of the shows -- which are great, do not misunderstand me -- but we want to see real stars in BH. Kim is the real star. Adrianne is a celebrity in the broad sense, and Kyle was a flash in the Hollywood pan, but Kim is the one with the talent and acting credentials.

As far as Taylor goes, she's outrageous and contentious, which makes for good TV, so I think it would be a mistake to take her out of the cast, although I'm not her biggest fan. Brandi's fun. Dana wants to be a part of that world, so she's like the regular-gal aspect, which is good too. Camile is just plain dog-crap crazy, so that works for the show.

I hate to say it, but Lisa and Ken are foppish English people who treat their dogs like children. To me, that's a bit (a) boring and (b) wierd. I do hate to say that because I absolutely like them, and would absolutely be friends with them under other circumstances (like I was rich or they were poor), but on my TV I'd like a little more action than birthdays and Christmas.

For goodness sake people enough about the Taylor/uninvited episode and why they were not able 2 get a hold of her! Dave Thank You for the Hawaiian episode! I'm still laughing about it!

thanks for a great show! I absolutely love it. I don't understand bringing someone as crude as Brandi into this but there must be a reason for it. It's tough to hear how critical people are of Kim, as she seems to be working thru all sorts of problems. It actually makes the show more realistic. Not every life is perfect. Dana seemed like a nice person but again, I couldn't understand what she was doing in the show. And yes, Taylor is absolutely the drama queen, but again, it's more reality I suppose. All the others on the show are wonderful and I look forward to each week. Loved the trip to Hawaii. Beautiful! Keep up the great work!

I don't think it is appropriate to blame Russell for sending the email when he is not here to defend himself. What is very clear is that Taylor told this group of women what he abused her. One of the women repeated what she said back to her. Taylor told Russell what Camille said. However, from Russell's reaction in sending the email, it appears evident that Taylor did not tell Russell that she told the women that he beat her. It is possible that Russell did not beat Taylor, and that, from the story he heard, Russell was furious and wanted to sue Camille for saying such terrible things about him on camera. If someone said something like that about me, I would have filed suit without the courtesy of a warning email. In any case, the whole thing was Taylor's fault. Even if the things she says about Russell were are true, which I find highly doubtful from what I now know about Taylor.

Also, to those who say the crew should have warned the Armstrong's of their disinvite status, the crew is supposed to be there simply capturing the action as it happens. They should not do anything to influence the "reality" depicted on the show. I know all these parties and vacays are set-up to capture silly moments and cat-fights for our enjoyment. But hopefully the crew can refrain from influencing the action at these events.

I really want to know how Paul managed to grow so much facial hair in the span of a few hours prior to the White Party while discussing Russel's e-mail with Adrienne in his home office. (season 2 episode 16)

At the beginning of episode 16, he is clean-shaven, but then at the White Party (that night) he has facial hair that looked like it had grown for several days.

I get the feeling that this scene was created and made up to provide context to the events about to transpire. It almost, to perfectly, set the scene for the whole episode.

Luv the Hawaii episode - mainly as it didnt have KIM & TAYLOR - luv the others especially Adrienne, Lisa & Camille. Kyles' OK but always wants to be the center 9f attention -Hi school is over Kyle. I agree with the person who said 'Kyle was over dramatic & tears didnt seem real - I am bracing myself as next week will have to look at Kim's boyfriend Ken (ugly) Thank U

Forgive me if this question was already posted, but how could the Armstrongs be so inaccessible for days? I understand losing a mobile phone, but Russell would have had one as well. I also assume, since Las Vegas isn't child-friendly, Kennedy's caregiver would have had an emergency contact number. Or simply call the front desk of the hotel/resort. I'm having trouble believing Taylor was unaware of his e-mail to Camille since he had already alluded to filing suit against Lisa in a previous episode. This was a perfect moment for some attention and pity.

CaliGramala

I still question that there's no scripting going on. Too odd that Taylor mentions in the limo on the way to the White Party that she wouldn't have left Vegas for anyone but Kyle. Arrives at the party only to be told to leave. Coincidence? Doubtful.

I think it would be interesting to hear from someone who works with abused women. I suspect that Taylor's behaviour is rather common for women in this situation. She does make comments about her words being exaggerated and does minimize the situation - but only when Russell is around or he is likely to be able to view the discussion about her situation. Abused women often have to play a different role in front of their abusers; they tiptoe around things to avoid igniting the flame. She knew that her and her daughter were in danger and was desperate to hide it --- from Russell. Those of us who are not in an abusive relationship recognize that she was handling it all wrong by staying with him and creating a fake world for him where no one acknowledges what he does, but for a woman in that situation, it is a common reaction to create whatever sense of security she can.

They did show the makeout session between Camille and Brandi. It was when they were dancing and Brandi was grinding against Camille, dirty dancing and grabbed her butt and touched her breasts! If that's not making out, I don't know what is.

Happy New Year to you and the crew Dave!! Great job! (So tough to be in Hawaii- haha). I would love to see a little more of the men get-togethers. They are usually so funny and calm. Ken is a hoot and Paul is a love and Mauricio, well it's obvious- he's the beef cake! xx

This is the first episode I've enjoyed this season--it was much more like season 1. I still don't believe an honest effort was made to warn Taylor and her husband against coming to the party and I think it was cruel to ambush them in order to capture the drama. But Hawaii was great fun, love it when we see less of Taylor, Kim, and Dana!

I think that Mr. Rupel has shown himself to be a person of integrity so I do not believe this is a scripted show.

I think he and his crew are only given locations of where they will be shooting and whatever happens on film is captured. Shows cost a lot of money to produce and there simply wouldn't be enough time or money to write and rehearse 'scenarios' that will be filmed. What about all the guests that the ladies entertain or are at events that are being filmed? I'm sure they wouldn't want to spend all day 'rehearsing' for some reality show! Nope, not scripted. Drama can be found anywhere- you don't need to stage it ;-)

Thanks, Dave. I enjoy your blogs. BTW- any thoughts on my suggestion of putting a 'thumbs up' , 'agree/disagree' or 'like' tab for comments made, instead of your moderators having to sift through similar posts by various viewers? Maybe for next season? xoxo

I have to say the Beverly Hills housewives grouphas been my favorite. I love watching how the other half...or the 1% lives. They are a great group of women. Lisa, Kyle and Adrian are my favorites. I don't like the fighting either. If I want to watch trash, I'll watch the jersey housewives. Dana, Brandi and Kim lower the bar a bit. The drama with camille last year and taylor this year was enough for each season so far. I hope when I buy the dvd's, there are extras of never before seen footage, including taylor and russell interactions that might explain is taking his life. That was sad. As a viewer, we too have only heard taylor's side. People I speak with also wonder if she exaggerated to make herself a victim hoping to be saved by the vanderpumps. I hope not, but we too need/want answers. Looking fotward to monday night , D from jersey ( totally misrepresented by housewives of new jersey)

Thanks for the crew blog! It's good to read the Q&A and to get the crew insight on what's going on. @ KYWOMAN, I beg to differ when it comes to Brandi. She's hilarious and fits the bill of what this show is about. Plus having her around brings us another side of Camille that is well-needed. We all have our own opinions on each of the cast - that's why a diverse cast works so well! If it were a show tailored to me, they'd do away with Dana, Kim & Kyle, but it can't always be about me - I'm not a RHOBH ;)

I so enjoyed this week's episode!...hmmm...why was this one so much more enjoyable than the others?...because it WASTN'T the "Taylor show" RHOBH doesn't need a drama queen dragging everyone down...RHOBH needs more of what you just aired with Brandi's antics and Lisa's biting humor!! 'nuf said.

I would like to know why the blogs from the ladies of RHOBH are not consistent. Aren't they required to blog after every episode? We're hearing from Brandi & Dana who are not considered regulars and yet, Kyle, Kim, Adrienne, Camille and Taylor remain infrequent or silent.

Thank you for the post Dave! I applaud you and your crew for always getting great footage!

My question is about the invites between the ladies. Do the producers request for group events and outings that the ladies must invite eachother? It doesn't make sense as to why Brandi would come to Hawaii after a rocky relationship between her and Kyle and a lack of relationship with Mauricio. Does he even know her at all? For other events like Kyle's Cinco de Mayo party none of the other ladies were invited so I'm just wondering how that works. Thanks in advance!

This was a great episode without the taylor drama & Kim doesn't seem to have enough respect for anyone else's time but her own. She obviously does not want to be a part of this show. Neither Taylor nor Kim blogs, but they have time to do everything else. I suspect they sense any negative comments headed their way & choose not to do so. So why have them? Do a Jill Zarin, Alex & Kelly & send them to neverland, too!

In a nutshell.. I would threaten lawsuit if some one called me a "wive beater" and it wasn't true. I feel so badly in retrospect for Russell. I could really see the shock on his face. Taylor to me plays the victim to gain attention. I still don't believe after everything that Russell hit his wive.. sad he had to die in vain so that Taylor could climb the social ladder. So sad. I really hope you post this.. I couldn't possibly be the only viewer to see her true self. I mean even while everyone is vacationing having a great time she calls them to be "the center of attention" making that fun trip about her. Normal people would of not dampened moods just saved it for their return. But again, can you say "drama queen"!!

This was a fun episode and I think you did great capturing the trip. The island hopper part was very funny. Lisa stole the show with her snarky comments avout Brandi. I love Lisa. She says exactly what i would. The only spoiler was Taylor's phone call. She had to ruin their fun. If she had any sense, she would have kept her mouth shut for 3 more days. Whoops! Taylor and sense are contradictory terms.
