REALLY?????!!!!!!! Let's get this straight... I take the mickey out of my own country too! You can never take life too seriously... if you ever lose your sense of humor you may as well throw the towel in.
I LOVE AMERICA!!! I despise racism. I bring my girls up this way, with the beliefs I hope is for the future for us all - equality on every level.
The English are the country full of what Aussies call 'the whining poms'... We are the nation of shopkeepers where we sit in the laundrets and whine about everything from the cost of mortgages to the price of a pint (and of course the weather)...!
We expect to be disappointed and if we aren't, we are disappointed by that!
There were many things going on behind the scenes that will come out later. I had to leave Charles and my girls for the whole afternoon (on family day) and had a lot on my mind. The reason I couldn't say goodbye to Stacie was that I had already been gone from home for four hours prior to another hour's drive home. I was there on time two hours before the rest of the group... and was going back to be given a hard time and then cook another dinner for my family.
P.S the wine being 100 years-old was aunt Francis' joke before mine! She's great!
P.P.S EVEN offered to do all washing up before I left too!
I have had to leave USA whilst people think I'm like this as I've been given so much grief! Stay tuned for next episode... Hope I can come back when the viewers see the real me. I'm not so bad. At least I'm real, and say it how it is! No BS with me anyway.
cat, you seem like a straight-up english woman. i agree you're misunderstood by people who dont understand that european people in general are, well...rude. clearly you understand that and it's great that you own that, but sorry to tell you you're no longer in England! It amazes me how Europeans say Americans have no class or etiquette--the only kind of etiquette Europeans have in my experience (I work in a major hotel in a city that relies on tourism) is table etiquette. other than that, in every day life and in conversation with others, they have zero manners. leaving a dinner party without saying goodbye, for example--regardless of if you had an hour drive and you had left a family day (advice: politely decline a dinner invitation if you have a family day already planned...)--is poor manners. it would have been an extra 5 minutes maybe to pull your host aside and say goodbye and thank you for dinner. i think you just need to accept that while you're living in a foreign country, if you want to be respected and liked, assimilate.
It didn't seem like you were racist to me, it seemed there were differences of opinion (any conversation with Bush and Obama in the same sentence remains a source of drama anywhere in America). You have a right to not like Tyra's personality, but they seemed to take that personally. After those two issues it seemed no one was sure if they could trust you anymore. I can't wait to see more of you and the rest of the show.
Oh, Cat. I am so sorry for all the grief you have been given. I personally think you rock. It is clear that you were edited to appear rude. I think it is wonderful you have you own opinion and stick to your convictions. This country is filled to the brim with lemmings. Uneducated lemmings, (and by uneducated I don't mean formal education, I mean too lazy to research and formulate their own opinions), and then have the audacity to become upset at those that disagree.
With that being said, stick to your guns, and ignore those who take that you have your own beliefs personally.
Cat you're just peachy. I love everything about you. Stacie was trying to set you up with that dinner, she wanted to make you uncomfortable & I think that was absolutely tasteless of her.
Totally LOVE you the most on DC. There is nothing you say or do that is offensive. I think playing the race card on a reality show that is heavily edited is wrong, wrong, wrong. I understood that you arrived on time and the others were late, I'm glad that was not edited out. And that was enough proof for me that you needed to leave when you did. That dinner at Aunt Frances' looked like a pretty casual affair, and it is acceptable to leave after the meal was served without offending anyone. Period.
I am a fan!! and I like George Bush! I think you are wonderful! You make this show...continue to be honest!
I for one wasn't amused by your sense of humor. You act as if everyone is below you.Hope your not here for too long like you say .and if your here for fun that have it but not at the expense of others.Or is it that you want the cameras just on you.
I absolutely don't think you are racist and I don't think Stacie thinks you're racist either. The conversation in the basement wasn't about you being racist, it was more about black people more often than not being in uncomfortable situations but letting loose and making the best of it..which you did not do regardless of what was going on behind the scenes. All in all, I think you just handled it improperly, lesson learned..moving on. I do enjoy your brashness and what Americans need to understand is that you are British and this how the Brits are. I look forward to seeing you develop as the season goes on. After Stacie, you are my favorite housewife. I hope you two become friends.
While you do seem a bit smug at times {perhaps that's just the American perception of a Brit?}, I don't think less of you from your behavior on the show. I think Stacie is throwing out the race card way to eagerly. She keeps bringing it up. From my perspective, the UK hasn't had the issues with race {i.e. slavery, oppression} that the USA has had to taint it's past. Shakespeare was writing Othello, with a hot black man being the star of the show, 5 hundred years ago. Race simply doesn't seem to be an issue for the UK the way it is here. I think this is reflected in how blunt and casual Cat is. And I like your lusty voice with the accent! You sound like a movie star from the silver screen.
Hey lady --- yoU are slowly, but surely becoming my favorite housewife on DC:-) This hole racist thing it SO stupid it is making me want to NOT get involved in this season...I'll try it for another week! I have enjoyed watching you...I sense you are pretty genuine and I lovE your style! The other blond that has dog hair issues is a stitch too...you tw shouyld keep things real and help eliminate the racism issues, blah! Good luck sister~
Every culture is different...everyone comes from different backgrounds. I do not think you are rude but rather misunderstood. It just seems if you don't follow the crowd on this show than you are a snob or a racist. Please. You shouldn't be driven out of the US due to rude people.
Cat, you're great! Editing is a b*tch, I think anyone who watches any of the Real Housewives shows knows that.
Cat, I think you're great! Editing is a b*tch, everyone who watches any of the Real Housewives shows knows that. Hang in there, we can tell you one of the good ones!
Well, Well, Well you finally decided to blog? Yeah, maybe it will be better when you get back from wherever but I doubt it!
Yeah, Stacie just invited "Cat" to make her uncomfortable. She just invited the rest of the ladies to watch poor "Cat" squirm. Right!!!:-) B please.
Cat,
There is a thing called respect. Just because you can say what you feel doesn't mean you should. You were a guest in someone's house. You didn't have to announce that you didn't like Sakai. You could have sipped it(which you did anyway) and you just had to make a face so everyone would know even your sip didn't taste good. And why did the chef have to know that you didn't like one his friends and former clients? What was your reason for bringing that up. I tell you what it was: you had absolutely nothing to contribute to a decent conversation once the group was no longer talking about you. And it wasn't about you it was about you in relation to your husband. In fact what is it that you do and why are you on a show about D.C. housewives?
I've watched both episodes thus far more than once and must have missed something. Who accused anyone of being racist?
Editing is a b*tch. But there was no editing in the first episode. Cat was rude to a dinner hostess ....period....speak for your self you can tell she's one of the good ones. btw how can you tell she's one of the good ones if there is so much editing going on?
I love your dry sense of humor. I don't see you as a racist or rude... Americans (which I am one) tend to want people to be fake to them in order keep their egos up. Most of the world call things as they see them. I don't think the D.C. ladies are as culturally diverse as they think they are.
Even if you did have that much to do that day, I still think it would have been polite to say goodbye or even thank you for having me...I just don't think that would have taken too long.
You just appeared to be snobbish, maybe this is not you. I look forward to the next coming episodes... Che
Hi, Cat, I think you're cool, and I totally get how being upfront and honest can be mistaken for being rude...been there done that! Keep in mind one of the reviews I read about this show stated that "if proximity to power is the real currency in DC, then these ladies are low-income"! HA HA HA!!!
Cat, I get you!!! You are one of the best on the show besides Mary. I would want to hang out with you anyday!!! Like the whole show actually. Didn't think I would, but not as much drama as Jersey, though I do like my Jersey girls. Hang in there Cat.
Stacie didn't throw out the race card. It's so interesting that when race is brought into a scenario to question other's poor behavior minorities are then accused of using the race card. Stacie simply threw out some ideas to Cat's poor behavior. The only time she came close to race was when she asked whether Cat was uncomfortable with being the minority for a change, which is still not accusing anyone of being racist.
Cat, I'm a black woman and you have done nothing to make me think you're racist. I know it's hard, but don't let all these negative posters get to you. Seems more like you're trying to get used to American culture. Yeah, there were some cringe-worthy moments, but I think that's what makes you, you! Just be yourself, and anyone who doesn't like it can KICK ROCKS!!! Call me crazy, but I think you're one of my faves! :)
oh wow. not only are you taking the piss, but you are doing it in the american south where people will smile right to your face while putting a knife in your back. So that isn't going to be appreciated , and comes off badly on camera. Reading your blog it explains some things but it makes me feel strongly that you should have stayed home, because it was a no-win from the beginning.
Hey Cat, I figured that scene where you asked for a drink had to be edited. I do not believe you met the woman and immediately demanded a drink. But I do think you should have thanked your hostess before you left.
Don't change Cat, you are great! Your honest & tell it like it is. If it wasn't for you I would not watch the show! Stay true to yourself & you will be fine.
Cat, You are strait forward, unlike some of your velvet hammer counter parts! They just can't take your honesty! I like you, I hate fake! Hang in there, you may just need some different friends!
Yes, Cat. I agree with you that the Brits are generally a nation of complainers and whiners (and, I say this with love, really). My last trip to China, we went to the Great Wall but weren't allowed to go up the road in the tour van lest we slide off the cliff. Of course, the only Brit on the tour bus rudely moaned and groaned all the way back to Beijing about not seeing the Great Wall. The rest of us were grateful to have our lives!
I'm a newbie to the American South, and am in a nearly all-black 'hood for the first time in my life. It's an adjustment from my conservative Yankee roots, for sure, as the energy down here is 'off the chain.' But, once you get used to the vibe, and go with the flow, it's exciting and fun. So, hurry back, relax and enjoy. Americans are, if anything, forgiving.
Cat, You are wonderful. Keep it up with your honesty on the show. I think everyone would like to be like you. Then there would be no stress.
Oh Cat, you seem to be honest and upfront and I love it cause it reminds me of myself. So I'm going to say it the way I say it.... I think that the reason why some may believe you're a racists is because you were a guest in a African American woman's home and the two famous people you did not like happened to be African American too and you made it your business to point out the fact that you did not like them more than once. Then when you realized that you had hit a hot botton, you laughed it off and turned your conversation towards the chef, which just made you seem even more insensative. You came off rude, snobbish and thoughtless. Eventhough honesty is a great quality, you should be more careful not to offend others while giving your opinion.
It makes a lot more sense after reading your blog that you left before the others did. I remember hearing you say that you were there on time when no one else was, but I didn't realize that meant you were there for a full two hours before the party kicked in to high gear. Even though it is frustrating to have to juggle your time, it's still fairly impolite to ignore your hostess before leaving an intimate gathering...
Cat, You are not a racist. Snob, Yes, but who isn't to some degree. Having lived in London for five years, I felt more comfortable there than I do in the US. America is a racist country, but they cannot face that. They just call themselves conservative, or elitist or religious or whatever. We see color before we see the person. Rock on!!!
Not understanding the Britt thing. All of the shows are using them tell Americans off. It seems to be the fad now. American idol,Hell's kitche,Dancing with the stars and America's got talent are just a few. I only take it as being rude. So keep up the rudeness Cat..it fits you Britts!
atlgir127...I am a black woman also. And I also don't think that Cat is racist. I do however think that Cat is rude. Cat is not new to the American culture so what is there to get USE to? You don't make negative comments if you take into consideration the other person's feelings, especially if that person has invited you out. In any culture rude is not acceptable. That being said I can tell that Cat is not used to being in situations where she has nothing to contribute which is why she goes negative. She had less of a problem at the polo match and when she went riding at Michaele's but she still made some negative comments. Maybe that is her personality when she is uncomfortable or maybe, as Stacie's husband said she is just rude. It is unfortunate that Stacie's comments have been turned into people thinking she said Cat is a racist or that Stacie is playing the "race card". Stacie herself said she did not think Cat was a racist. Cat should certainly be herself, and if in being herself she offends someone or gets accused of being something that she is not then she will eventually ask herself "is it worth it to me to "be myself in this situation?"...We all do it, it is a learning process and some of us are farther along in their education than others. Though she is not my favorite, I like Cat.
I WANT TO LIKE YOU, BUT YOU NEED TO CHILL OUT.YOU MADE ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WATCHING YOU AT THE DINNER PARTY. I HOPE TO SEE YOU HAVE SOME FUN WITH THE OTHER LADIES.RELAX !!!
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But if what's shown of you in future episodes is anything like we've seen in the first two.....well, let's just say you won't be one of my favorites. I hope we see you treating people with dignity and respect in the future. Sara in Seattle
I certainly dont think your behavior at the dinner party was motivated by racism. But I can't say what is was motivated by...I was under the impression that the British were raised with proper manners. I'm not saying that you weren't, but the whole wine thing was cringe-worthy. If it was so terrible, you could have discreetly poured it out, or just not have finished it! I must say, it seems like you go out of your way to be rude. It's only been a couple of episodes and of course it's an edited TV show and we don't know you personally, but you seem like a hard nut to crack!
I don't think you are racist, rude or any of the things they have said. You dont have to like Obama, Tyra or saki'. You have a right to your opinon even if it is different from the others, I feel they gave you some rude looks and started acting funny towards you when you expressed yourself.
Nobody said anything about the guest who came late to the party which was a rude thing to do. I did see you thank the aunt before you left and let everyone at the table know you had to leave. Which was fine in my book. Personally, I don't like Bush,Tyra or saki, but thats just me. I am a Black woman. Seems to me they were just searching for something to say about you.
Cat, I think you are FABULOUS!! I want to have you over to the house for brunch and mimosas on a sunny day to laugh for a few hours. I'm continuing to watch to see what you, Mary, Stacie and Lynda will do next.
Cat, whatever you do don't change who you are. As you can see, some are happy and some are unhappy with you. You can not please everyone!! As long as you have family and loved ones who care about you that's all that matters. I believe that those individuals who left negative posts are not well traveled. If they were, they would know that Europeans in general are very, opinionated, direct, and honest. Unlike Americans, Europeans can say how they feel without being titled a "racist". So what, you don't like Tyra's personality. After all, you never discredited her accomplishments, you just said you did not like her behavior, which was similar to the statement you made about Obama. You were not fond of these individuals behavior... big deal America. Hello....she never said she did not like their skin color or that she did not like black people. Anyway, Obama is half white and Tyra has some white in her because her eyes are green, so I guess your raciest against whites as well (lol). I happen to appreshiate your honesty, and I'm glad to see a women with balls who is not scared to share her views (especially in America). Your amazing just the way you are!!
Cat, You are always giving dirty looks. Is the situation you do not like or is that your natural expression? Also how did you get chosen for the show? I am curious.
You are a strong and beautiful mother of two gorgeous girls. Being a mother is the hardest job on the planet. Your children seem happy and well adjusted so obviously you're doing something right. There is nothing cooler than a good mom who takes care of her family, but also stays who she is. I love that you're not trying to be somebody that you're not. Also, on a different note, I absolutely LOVE your syle. You have to start letting us in on your fashion secrets!

I love you Cat! I think you're great, and I love your honesty. I went to grad school in the UK and they are always taking the piss out of people. You are definitely my favorite housewife and remind me of a good British friend of mine who always makes me laugh!
