Mary Schmidt Amons

Mary talks about her honest (and sometimes unpopular) opinions, DC's diversity, and catty gossip.

on Aug 27, 20100

What a roller coaster ride watching this week's episode was for me! I laughed, I cried, I CRINGED! How about you?

I am really intrigued by Stacie's story and how it is unfolding. I know it has been a work in progress for her over the last few years. I have deep empathy for her quest to find her birth mother and father. Until I heard Stacie's story that was something I definitely took for granted, it made me appreciate the gift God has given me with my own parents. I also loved seeing Stacie with her "real world" girlfriends from Howard University. I may have been born and raised in Virginia, but even I know what a huge event the Howard Homecoming is to its Alumni! It was nice to see how supportive and encouraging they are of Stacie.

I had mixed emotions watching the scene at Contemporaria in Georgetown. It's one of my favorite places and happens to be owned by Deborah Kalkstein, an incredibly talented Peruvian born classically trained architect and interior designer who is one of my dearest friends. I was slightly mortified when I threw out an idea about black walls and Cat and Jason had some rather caustic words of opinion. I was actually proud of myself by expressing to them the need to show respect and also loved watching myself continue to laugh and have fun with them dealing with the issue and moving on. A true friend will speak the truth, express honest feelings and deal with issues with no hard feelings. The three of us have that deep of a relationship and mutual respect that we can keep it REAL and honest. Believe me, I have been on the other end when I have done something unintentionally offensive to Cat and she was honest and truthful about how I had made her feel. I so appreciate her openness, honesty, integrity as a treasured true friend.

DC is NOT "Hollywood for Ugly People!" I get offended by that statement! We have highly intelligent and motivated achievers here! The DC Area's diversity isn't shown as much as I would like so far in the series. I have been fortunate enough to get to see a lot of different sides to our city and the people who live here- I enjoy all of them. Congressmen, Senators, Lobbyists, Generals, White House employees, etc. They aren't just Republicans and Democrats to me, they are neighbors and parents with kids who I went to school and church with. From National to local level politics, from charitable events to local PTA's, DC is about people to me, not about what policies they are promoting or fighting. I love interacting with people with diverse opinions and attitudes on a real and human level. Thankfully there is no shortage of that here in DC! I only hope our leaders across the Potomac can adapt a less partisan way of operating and affect positive change for our great nation!

Off that soapbox and onto the Oasis Winery Grape Stomp! It is a spectacular piece of land and you can tell it was designed for entertaining. The "Thompson Seedless grape stomp" was actually fun! I was glad, (and a bit jealous in retrospect) when Cat and Jason B left, as I was relaxed and doing what I love to do, being present and making the best of a beautiful day, no matter who, where and what is the situation. Believe me, I did my best! The end of the evening was tortuous to say the least, and difficult to navigate around Michaele's defensive and distasteful comments throughout the evening. The truth is, Michaele has known Lynda for years, has been a guest at her home, and at one point had a professional relationship with her as well.

I do want to also clarify that I in no way intend to be judgmental about anyone when it comes to their choice of career. EVER. I honor and respect all people who work hard at any profession. Unfortunately, I appear to be a bit catty when sharing with Cat in the car ride out to for our polo lesson that Michaele sold me cosmetics at Nordstrom in the 90's. For this I humbly apologize for appearing judgmental. It was merely me stating the facts about how I know Michaele. I have fond memories of Michaele from back then, she was incredibly talented as a makeup artist and remember her fondly being the bubbly, happy and gorgeous tall blonde as you entered the store!

Virginia horse and wine country really is spectacular in the fall, (if you ever have a chance to visit, make it happen!) The drive out reminded me of visiting my Grandfather in that area as a child, the rolling hills always made me think there was an ocean on the other side of them and I love how quickly you can be from DC to the country. It's pretty unique and I have always enjoyed taking the kids to pumpkin patches, mazes, farms and cider stands. Seeing it makes me excited for sweaters, boots and jeans and crisp Fall mornings in DC! The ride down gave us a chance to hear about the Black Caucus dinner incident involving the Salahis with Jason and Ted in tow. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it! All I know is that Jason B was blowing up my phone with text messages at the event in complete shock and disbelief at what he was witnessing. I would never crash a party, much less something the President was scheduled to attend. I couldn't imagine many people who would, so perhaps there is a credible explanation coming up.... It was obvious the Turners couldn't make heads or tails of anything either- I think it was definitely curiosity that led all of us down there. I loved Jason T's line about it being "tantamount to Stacie crashing a Daughters of the American Revolution" party! Too funny!

I will choose not to address the very upsetting and absolutely made up and false accusations of the Salahi's about my daughter and will take the high road here on this, knowing the truth as I do. My daughter, Lolly is the furthest thing from a criminal and while I certainly don't consider myself or my children perfect, I was outraged at their ludicrous and shocking allegation, but enough on that for now. The fact that I have made a very personal decision to create a barrier for my daughters and my closet is not due to any mistrust in them in any way shape or form. Simply, its a matter of convenience to keep track of my belongings and allow my girls to borrow anything their hearts desire, teaching them the principle of respecting others and asking appropriately. I love my girls to look great and they know very well they are welcome to anything and everything, just on my terms of "asking first!" I love to share what I have been fortunate enough to afford, especially when it comes to looking great and being stylish, particularly when it comes to my gorgeous girls!

The Ted Gibson scene made me smile. I can't help myself, I LOVE Ted Gibson.Ted and his husband/business partner Jason are just like any old married couple that likes to laugh, and poke fun at each other. I know the deep love and commitment that they share for each other and spending time with them makes my day! I didn't like how I seem to suggest that I was introducing them to "all the important people in DC", as that job is well above my pay grade and social connections, I just wanted to introduce him to people who could benefit from his incredible talent of making a woman of any age feel beautiful. I'm excited that you will see more of Ted and Jason and their talents as the season progresses. They were so generous with their time and resources in showing support for my charity Labels for Love as we hosted the Modus Union event. Check out our website www.labelsforlove.org for our next event coming on November 4th!

Thank you all for your support and kind words over the last weeks! This was an enormous risk to throw myself and my family out into this "reality" world. As a family, we jumped into this for all positive reasons, mainly to promote our charity work with an opportunity to help others on a larger scale with exposure as well as sharing our story of being a family. I am very proud of my family and its refreshing to hear about how many of you relate to us as a family. Keep up the positive feedback, we are all loving it!

Thank you for hanging in there with us! As I believe with all my heart, the truth WILL prevail!

It was unfortunate that Lolly's deal came up in front of thousands of viewers but, it has and now it's up to you to make it right.

Remember our children aren't perfect and we as parents need to disapline and guide them when they do wrong. If not, then they don't learn the bigger lesson!

I feel that's what is wrong with this generation. Parent's hire lawyer's to get them off , when they really need tough love at home! God Bless You on this one!

Mary you are my absolute favorite of all the housewives. I've never blogged before but I felt compelled to share my admiration for your elegance and class. You remained so composed while being attacked by Michaele's snide remarks and Tareq's false accusations about your daughter. You are truly gorgeous and your style is impeccable! Your family is beautiful...thanks for putting yourself "out there" for all of us to enjoy. Love you!

Mary...you are simply the best! You are the most honest, down to earth person they selected to be on the show. Hurray for you! You have a beautiful family and life. I live in NOVA myself and this show being here is quite interesting and real. We just relocated here from Southern California last year and used to watch "Housewives of OC" and they are all FAKE. No real entertainment fromt their lives but shopping and spa days. You are bringing the real life into it..politics, Government, etc. Thank you! Keep up the good work!

YOU expemplify the all grace, integrity and style that DC offers! YOU show women everywhere how to stand up to bullies and crazies. Keep up the great work, stay steady, stay strong! Women everywhere, look to Mary as the example of how to act in the face of adversity!

Mary- Your appearance on this program is uplifting at times and also lacking the reality of the day. I live in Maryland for a reason ---- to avoid DC’s politics altogether. I and my family live, work, and vote in the real world. WE have a combined total of three master degrees and six under graduate degrees from public and private university systems in finance and law for my husband, our daughter, and myself. My daughter is currently working full-time while in college full-time as a makeup counter manager in a large upscale department store. She literally is servicing others with beneficial product's which equates to exactly what you do when promoting charitable work. There is no difference between the two. It is what it is - an exchange of services and products for fee income. That comment that you made about your peer and she selling you makeup was a very low blow. Perhaps editing is at fault; however, the words and context were extremely clear. You come across as a very kind yet naive person via the editing of the show. Is there any chance the viewers will be privileged to see a "real housewife" that would love to but cannot party and dine out nightly, one who actually cleans, cooks, worries over the bills, and stays home with the children when they are ill, all while balancing paying the mortgage this month or paying for the much needed child's braces and co pays for the doctors services! Just asking here! Bring someone into the mix that meets the criteria please.

A "real housewife" would also manage their adult children while they are living in the parents’ home by encouraging personal boundaries, respect, trust, and responsible behavior. You are doing the opposite. Remove the lock on the closet door and have an adult talk with your daughter explaining the consequences for removing your personal belongings without your permission first. Open door policies in upper management positions were set in place to promote trust and open communication between the management and the employee. This tool is extremely effective at home. If you were to remove that security lock on the closet door, literally it will open a “new” door to a deeper level of trust and communication between your daughter and yourself. My daughter is 21 years old who loves fine jewelry and clothes. When she visits home from college for the summer – I no longer throw myself against my closet door to hold her off. Together we “shop” in my closet and jewelry collection (to borrow for now) in exchange for washing the car, cleaning out the garage, household chores, going to the grocery store for me and running errands, etc… and believe me – it works! We share positive communication and a level of trust that most of her friends do not have with their mothers. I also have an inside look as to what the younger generation is talking and thinking about. I also consider it a compliment that she appreciates my taste in apparel and jewelry– classic mix. I wish you and your family well, Deb from Maryland

Doing your makeup at Nordstroms! Really! That was a really classless thing to do. Have you EARNED your money or come about it the old fashioned way. The winery drama was a low blow. Consider the source and realize that you should have never asked what he was thinking. Did you see the posting in question? Did you ask to see it? Lolly seemed to protest just a bit too much. Just sayin. Hope it all works out for you. Don't get caught up in the drama and don't turn from your center. Can't stomach Cat and Lynda, Michela needs some truth about her husband. Stacie and you are the sanest of the bunch.

I am in love with ur pendant on the leathr cord. Is it a robert lee morris piece. It looks alot like his work. Please tell me who makes this. I have been obsessing about it since I first saw it. Where can I get it, I am going crazy!!!! It looks so beautiful on your neck. It is classy, but very young and extremely beautiful. That is what I like about your style. Instead of walking around in an evening dress during the day you look young, on trend without trying too hard. I love your style. Where can I get this piece!!!!!!! Love and best wishes to your family, Karen Babby

Hey, you asked Tareq what he had on his mind. Didn't you watch the program? You pulled it out of him. Then, after the accusation, you had nothing to say if your daughter HAD been involved in the theft. Back at your house, your daughter deftly turned the conversation away from her involvement into how awful Tareq is. He's definitely an acquired taste, but YOU are the folks who continue to hang out with those two when you don't have to. I can't believe that you never had the cajones to day, "If my daughter did steal your car & gear, I'm very sorry, and she will be completely responsible." Instead, you went all on the defensive. YOU are the one with the lock on your closet. And as far as the worth of the gear compared to your daughter's feelings, how about the feelings of the people who owned that gear. You obviously have never had custom boots, saddles & tack that have a tremendous amount of emotional value to the owners.

You make me want to get my hair cut at Ted Gibson's salon! Alas, on disability, there's no way I can pay the amount they are charging. It's tough enough living in this area on the income we do. I'll just have to put that desire on my "someday but probably no day" list.

Mary, If these shows are designed to make people envy other peoples lives, they've struck pay dirt! I envy your life! You are beautiful, you have your feet on the ground, you have a gorgeous husband and family, and you have money and class. You carry yourself beautifully, and I'll admit I envy you for all you have. I have wonderful kids and a great husband, but I've never had money in my life. I've worked hard but just barely kept above the poverty line. I've never envied any other housewife on any other show. But I envy you. Jenta

Hi Mary...you are my fav! I like what you just said in your blog that you dont look at people as being of different parties. People are just people regardless what party they belong to, but we all have the same feelings. I am a Dem but have many friends who are Reps and I love them so very much. I love sharing our different ideas and sometimes we open up each others eyes and allow ourselves to be more open and seeing other views. I love your family and the way you all love each other. You have a beautiful family!!! Cant wait till next week!!!

Mary...You are my absolutel favorite housewife of ALL housewives, and I SO admire you for your honesty and your desire to NOT participate in "catty gossip". You really caught my heart and respect when you made the comment that you basically make it a point to not speak negatively about anyone. You choose to take the high road...and I know that that's not always the easy road (especially when the others are taking a different path). God bless you, and your work...I cannot wait to see how things continue to develop!

I am impressed with this blog post. You confront your actions, where you were coming from with them, and acknowledge responsibility for them. Then you actually express regret about the parts that do not reflect who you perceive yourself to be, and want to be. My God, if only more people were capable of this. I hope you continue to show yourself as this kind of admirable person. We are all flawed, but acknowledging it is so rare now-a-days.

Hi Mary, Love your style and how you elegantly don't engage in the others drama. Stand above it. Would like more shows about the fun people you know and just concentrate on the gifts in our beautiful area. Who needs more shots on adults behaving badly. Please keep the show on great people, personally loved the furniture and how you decorate your house. Love that you had a keyless door to the closet. That is great. You and your family are beautiful and loving keep that always on the front and don't let others drag you in their drama. Stay classy!

Crafty-Michaele should stay in her lane because a DC socialite and all the other proclomations her and Tareq claim; they're simply NOT! Was she truly a make up artist at Nordstroms, hell she probably waltz in every day pretending to be employed there. Starting real foundations because of who your related to is not bad at all.

Mary, I love that you are a family person. Thank you for showing that side of you. I can imagine that it would be hard to subject your children to this kind of show. I am confused as to what kind of person you really are though... I have seen a lady side, a snobby side, a vulnerable side, and what else? Oh Yeah, the really cool, chill side is nice. Please put the snobby side away, it makes you look stupid. Your better than that.

Mary, you are so sweet. Bless your heart! That's what we say here in the south when we fell someone deserves pity. And that is exactly what I would say about you! You act like you are open and honest and loving. Yet your private remarks are only barbs and insults towards your fellow cast mates. Not to mention you spend time with some of the most hateful cast mates.

I do think that Michaela is lacking in social skills, but I think you absolutely deserved to be called out by her. Your demeaning comment about how she did your makeup when she worked behind the makeup counter was designed to not only expose your station in life, but to also demean hers. I know you may not wish to understand, and many of your fans will jump to your defense, but those comments were simply uncalled for. Working in retail does not disqualify your ability to raise in social class. Remember, as far as we cal tell your social class comes from your family , not any real accomplishments of your own. So that begs the question, what would you be now without that inherited social class.

Bless your heart Mary...you are sweet!

Mary, You are so composed... I would have been over the table and strangling that man! of course I think that is what I would have done, but on never knows until faced with a trues dilema! You seem like a real lady and a wonderful mother... I will truly look forward to learning a little more about you and your family in this reality show. Keep your head up and continue to be the wonderful lady you appear to be. God's peace!

I am pretty sure Michaele didn't monetarily earn her current financial situation. She is riding on coat tails as well. In no way is she classy. She appears very self centered, and tries to look like she has money to burn. If you were working at a make up counter at Nordstrom, and some lady and her husband came in flaunting and carrying on like that, and trying to act like the ultra wealthy...I cannot imagine you wouldn't roll your eyes. (Or at least want to.) I just think Mary was frustrated by knowing where Michaele came from, and how she now feels the need to "advertise" and flaunt things. Pure class, is keeping it low key, and not flaunting. Just my opinion.

Mary, I am already a fan. You always take the high road and seem to stay out of the fracas. That being said, I don't know why no one (including you) called the Salahi's on their lack of payment for the party they supposedly hosted! That is in such poor taste! I guess Paul's PR person should not be surprised, since litigation seems to be the only way they can solve anything. To think she wouldn't show up at the party until a letter was signed holding them not responsible for payment! Then she keeps saying she wants to stay positive and keep moving forward, but she attacks you at the table in the winery! She is common.

Michaele totally had it out for you at that dinner. I mean they should be happy that you even stuck around, what an embarrassing event they threw on. They were searching for drama and since Cat left, and didn't give them the chance to attack her they threw all their daggers into you. You are so sweet and beautiful. They are clearly desperate for camera time, and need to create whatever drama they can to get it. Don't let them get to you.

Craftyjitjol

You've brought up Michaele's make-up counter job more than once. I appreciate you apoligizing, but for some reason you seem to feel the need to knock her down a notch. Have you ever had a "real" job? Be thankful for what you have and what was given to you (earned by others), you never know when you might lose it. Having a real job working at a makeup counter is classy. Riding the coattails of a famous grandfather isn't.

Why the Nordstrom comment about Michaele? SO WHAT, was she robbing a bank or working an honest job? How could you put that down? It that isn't elitist, what is, Mary!! I do like you and am still sizing everyone up, I was just disappointed that you made that remark, it offends everyone working class person, I happen to work behind a makeup counter in a dept. store and was personally taken aback and deeply offended by the implication.

no mam, do not try to sugar coat what you said about Michaele being a makeup artist.........you said it, now own it......your intent was to imply that she comes from nothing bc of her past career, you are not fooling anyone, so stop! most successful people come from very humble beginnings, should people view Lolly as someone who comes from nothing once she's successful b/c she's a waitress at a restaurant.
