Mary Schmidt Amons

This week's episode sends Mary on a trip down la rue de mémoire.

on Aug 19, 20100

This week's episode is one that makes me long to return to one of my favorite cities.... Paris! I have not been back to the "City of Lights" since I was 18! My father used to take me with him on business trips, much to my teenage delight. I have such great memories with my dad, who is one of my heroes. I got a bit busy raising a family of five kids since that trip, and haven't been able to get back. I enjoyed living vicariously as I watched The Turners and Salahis walking those beautiful streets. It made me want to go back soon! I would love to get the Amons kids there as well. Can you imagine? It could be a true updated re-enactment of the Griswolds' "European Vacation!" I am passionate about music, art and fashion which is such an important part of French culture. It was so exciting to see Jason's brother perform! Who knew Jason's family included a rock star musician? It was great to see Stacy and Jason travel so far to support him. It's very touching to me how clearly they love their families. I loved how Stacy was worried about the "details" and Jason just basically said, "I got this, it's what I do!" What a funny scene. Even the matching luggage made me smile -- they are the cutest couple! If ever asked to do this show again, I am signing up for a Turner Tour of Paris next season!!

Paul's party aftermath was interesting. I actually had to duck out pretty quickly that night. I was feeling very ill that day and was feeling pretty miserable at dinner, but I felt strongly about sticking around to hear Paul speak and honor him on his special day. I was so touched by his beautiful toast when he was FINALLY allowed the chance to speak! Paul spoke from his heart and was obviously very moved by all of his friends who showed up to celebrate him. I thought he handled all the many "distractions" very well that night and I loved his candor and honesty in his speech. I decided to exit the party as soon as the cake was cut -- I'm sure glad I did! I think I dodged a bullet and escaped some drama!

Our Meghan was awarded "Funniest Amons One Liner of the Week" at the end of our "sexting" conversation, and I am proud of her that she raised the issue with me, on camera no less! I'm not sure I would have had the courage to speak about such issues with my parents at her age, even in private. It's healthy to talk about issues and pressures kids are dealing with these days. I certainly don't want my kids to get their information from friends at parties (oh, maybe that was just me?) or the Internet. I feel her school did a good job of putting it out there. It's a world I am shocked by regularly these days....

I caught some heat this week about Kona from some people and "making" Rosa "gear up and pick up." I have to plead ignorance on that as Rosa knew it bothered me and took matters into her own hands. I did not ask her to do get down on her hands and knees and go on "poop patrol" and never would. I would have "TOLD" Lolly to do it. Also, thank you for the many tips on dealing with Kona's non-stop shedding! We did pick up a "Furminator" and it's worked great! We found we could stuff pillows with all the hair it takes off.... now, if we could just find a spot for Lolly to "Furminate" other than our driveway, we would be making real progress on a special pet peeve of mine.... Also, to clarify, Kona is a mixed breed, a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and an English Mastiff. Some of you were curious and I got it wrong in one of my interviews. Apologies!

I did get a chance to check out the Bravo Real Housewives of D.C. part of the website a bit more this past week and loved seeing the bonus clips! I was disappointed to see that my clip of grocery shopping in our local Safeway with my son Ryan wound up on the editing room floor! I have been making the "Mclean Safeway Shuffle Shopping trip" since I was a child, and I consider the people there to be part of my extended family. Our family watched it together and we laughed, especially when I make a pretty bold statement about the "talent" that I have developed in packing a grocery cart! I used to have to use two carts. Thanks to my yet to be patented system I'm down to one (hey, it's little things that make you happy!) Even our bonus clip about our family morning routine was bizarre for me to watch as I usually am sleepwalking in my PJs and Uggs when I do it and usually on autopilot!

We are having a great time so far as a family enjoying this surreal experience of watching ourselves on TV! The show has provided plenty of ammunition for all for us to make fun of each other, although I seem to be taking most of the shots! I guess that's what I signed up for with this gig, so my skin is getting tougher by the moment these days! We are pleased that editors have chosen to show the fun we have together and the ups and downs of living life as a large family! I have been overwhelmed by the overall expression of support and cheers from you viewers and even the critics are funny (well, some of them anyway) with their comments and observations. THANK YOU for taking the time to share your kind words towards me and our family! I'm truly humbled! My heart is that our story will be seen as one that is positive, real and relatable, even if seen through a reality show filter, which is highly unusual, and can only tell a small part of our story. No matter where you come from, regardless of what your economic or perceived or hoped for social status is or isn't, family, and relationships are what makes the world go around, and we all need to show respect, support, and love for one another, especially within our own families, which sometimes can be the hardest challenge. I know it can be for us at least!! To be given an opportunity to share our "functionally dysfunctional" family story has been a humbling and wonderful experience so far and I am holding on tight during this pretty wild ride!

Thanks again for watching, especially if you're on vacation! I hope the show is entertaining, and I know there is more soap opera drama to come, so hang in there with us. There's more fun and craziness to come!

Mary, I think that you are a beautiful women. You are a cut above the rest! Classy lady with dignity and pan ash! The facial expressions you make, say so much without a word coming out of your mouth. By far, the best of the best you are!

Michaele had a job at a make up counter. She should be proud to have had an honest job. So someday a comment will be made about your daughter "She used to serve me food".

I don't understand you, Cat and Lynn. Why the judge and jury act? Women should lift each other up and not turn around and tear them apart.

Okay, I understand this is a new show to the housewives of DC. But, please read the other city's blogs. DC your blogs are down right boring. I hope that it gets better an that u all can talk about wat really happened on the show. Not how nice the weather is. THanks

what?
what?

Why would she involve herself in a party she attended but wasn't financially responsible for? She was not one of the hosts, and that's not her responsibility. Why involve yourself with something that doesn't concern you? Its none of her business.

Mary, I do like you but was turned off about how you talked about Michaela in the limo, about her behind the counter at Nordstroms, and her social climbing,etc...THAT WAS WRONG, as you were on your way to her party! Hey, I worked at Burger King at 19 and am now a corporate lawyer, so go figure. DON'T EVER RIDICULE SOMEONE FOR WORKING NO MATTER WHERE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!! shame shame and shame on you. Second, for someone who no national TV claims she doesn't talk about people, boy that was contradictory...practice what you preach, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it! I really do like you and hope this was a one shot deal, but gossiping is for 13 year olds, dont' let Kats' negative energy feed you like that, stay away.

Mary, you are adorable and sooo likeable. You remind me of myself quite a bit, always there to keep the peace and harmony. I love your postiive outlook and attitude. I appreciated and respected how you had an honest conversatsion with Micahaela at her vineyard, and as always you were the diplomat, not one to hurt feelings and to not get involved in the "kat ty gossip".....lol. Oh boy, you might want to stay away from her, speaking of Kat....I smell a rat. Best of luck to you and your beautiful family, thanks for keeping it real!

Mary,

You are absolutely fabulous and I adore you!!

I really expected you to be a spoilt, rich girl when I started watching RHODC...but I am so glad that I was wrong. You seem to be such a warm, lovely, woman and I know that if ever we were to meet we would become fast friends.

I look forward to reading more of your blogs and watch how this season unfolds.

Take care and love to your cute hubby and the kids.

Mary you were also my favorite after watching the few episodes thus far. That is until tonight. My mind changed when claimed to never say anything negative to or about anyone. Then while sitting in the barrel room at the Oasis Winery you told Michaelle that it was so inappropriate to confront Lynda about the comments she made to Paul. I loved the comment you made saying Lynda was only saying things out of concern. Give me a break! Following this remark you did the exact same thing that you accused Michaelle of doing. It looked like everyone there at the table felt very uncomfortable by it. Wouldn't you call this hypocrisy?

Mary, I think you're awesome!!! You're my favorite of all the housewives on any of the Real Housewives series. You see very real and down to earth. You look great too! I'd love to know your skin care regimen. Thanks for the humble attitude!!! You are a great example of a true lady!!!

Hi Mary! I think you and Cat are the bomb!!!!! Yeah! Don't you wish you would of left when Cat left the grape stomping party??????? I would have asked Macheala (however its spelled) whether her lawyer contacted the birthday boy of the party she hosted. I have friends and if I think there out of line. I will let them know what I heard and give them a chance to defend or admit to it. There is no shame in that. You and Cat are my Favorites. Love Cats frankness. I did think she was a little bitchy at the grape stomping party but I think her opinion of Macheala was influenced by all she heard from others and saw for herself.

Mary, as i watch , yet another installation of housewives, I find you refreshing in the "old school' sense of 'contemporary housewives'!! I am 35 years old and have two step daughters and one son. Watching your demeanor with your family is comfort in a flat screen ! I relate to your personality, and like to think that you are approachable even though you may be out of my wealth bracket! That, my dear, speaks volumes to your character! Kudos! I hope the season holds true to my opinions! I love Stacie, too!!!!!!!!!

Mary - you've got more class than Cat and Lynda, but just like them you are STUCK on trying to expose Michaele. You are clearly jealous. My mother and husband watched this ONE episode and they both think you are catty and jealous. Grow up and get over the fact that she used to do her makeup.

Mary, you are far and away my favorite DC HW. Your candor and personality are so enjoyable to watch. I find you to be a terrific mother and wife, as well as a great friend. You are so fun and relatable, it is really great to see. I think it is strange that reading over the blog replies for other RHW in DC, as well as NJ and NY, the moron comments seem to be heavily concentrated on your page... It is actually funny, but strange. Why do so many weird people with ridiculous things to say feel compelled to say it to you? Cheers!

That Kona is such a cutie! We have a Bernese Mountain dog and I can't think of a better mix than with a Mastiff! We've been looking for a male dog that has the berner laid back, snuggler personality with the calm, protective Mastiff solidity, plus one that likes to play with my youngest (6 y.o.) If you ever want to "re-home" Kona we have 3 acres ... just kidding! Sort of.

Thanks for letting us all in to see your great life and family!

Mary, as a born and bred Virginia girl, I was a little worried at first that you were gonna portray the rich, snobby elitist. But no doubt, you have more personality and are more real than any of the other housewives from any season. You appear to be a loving mom and I love the relationship with you and your husband. You guys seem like a very fun couple to hang out with. God bless ya!!

Oh relax! It's none of our business that Mary uses store bags or what she does for the environment. This is sheer entertainment, do we have to pick everything apart? Sheesh...

Hi Mary,

I love your style and thus far, you seem to be a very nice person. Here's a tip toregarding the poop (in case no one else has told you): you can get a Super Pooper Scooper--the kind that has the claw. This way, whomever is picking up aafter Kona, they don't have to bend. It works wonders!

I would add that if you are overwhelmed to have dog hair, getting the dog to professional groomers as in monthly appts will help alot as pros have all the time and technique to get the excess hair out as it is alot of work to try to do it yourself. I think that you are a wonderful trooper to support your daughter and a dog is such a wonderful addition that it is worth the extra money a month to get that dog hair under control. They even have dog van groomers that come to your house. It is well worth it.

They should have put the bonus scenes of you grocery shopping and fixing breakfast in the show. I like seeing that type of everyday stuff. So cute!

Mary, I loved the shopping trip scene with your son! It was a riot!

As a Safeway shopper myself, both in CA and AZ, I have the Safeway members reward card. Do they not have them in VA? I was waiting for you to punch in your number and see how much you saved on your total bill! That is always my favorite part!

You and your family are lively, fresh, and fun. I enjoy watching yoiu interact with each other, and especially the level of love and respect between you and your husband. It is lovely to see that.

All the best!
