Be Brooklynized

Alex shares the story behind her FEED corset, and explains why she loves living in Brooklyn.

April 23, 2009

Brain dead. That would be me tonight. Very long day, but when you see the reunion special on May 12th it’s going to be amazing. I can’t wait to see it myself, and I was there!! But enough about things I can’t talk about; let’s get onto the business at hand…

Happy Halloween! I enjoy episodes like this one when it’s obvious that the events took place a few months ago, to give people an idea of the lead-time from filming to airing. Someone emailed me last week to congratulate a fellow Aries on the birthday earrings, and this Libra was momentarily confused.

Opening night at the opera was September 22nd, and I was very happy to wear the FEED corset that Simon bought for me at the Go Green Expo last year. Designed by Maggie Norris, a great couturier, the corset was made using 3 FEED bags. Part of the donation Simon made that night went to the Amazon Rainforest project , and the balance went to feed 176 children at school for a year. See http://www.wfp.org/node/404 . Maggie paired the corset with a nifty little water bottle holder that she created using found objects; leather from a pair of boots, buttons from a military jacket, etc. What a great way to send a message to the world – and different than a t-shirt or hat. And yes, the opera that night was amazing! Renée Fleming was as fabulous as ever, and it was the first time I had heard anything from Manon live, which was exciting.

Story, i enjoyed sharing this.

Alex, I remember seeing in last years episodes, that you were raised in the Midwest, and liked city life, better. Well dear, you can take the girl out of the midwest, but not the midwest out of the girl. Cooling off in the backyard blowup pool, living in a remodel with all the inconvience and mess, not having tv's in the bedrooms, allowing your boys to be boys, are all hallmarks of the Midwest mindset. Yes I love the midwest, lived in Boston area for a time. Now live in Jasper county Indiana and love it. Alex you and Simon are my favorites out of the show. Hope you all have a great summer. They should do a Housewives of Jasper County. LU Bishop

Alex and Simon are great people. They are different than the other cast members, and I like that about them. Many people judge them for their bizarre charateristics, but in my opinion they are not hypocrites; they are real people trying to climb the rungs of success. Its horrible that these people are scrutinized primarily because they live in brooklyn yet the other cast members--excluding Bethany, because she is also my favorite--all potray themselves as being the most ghetto!!!!

Alex,
I love you on the show. It is so nice to see people like you and Simon who love each other so much. I'm really envious of your relationship. Who cares that people think you guys are fake? Jealousy can turn people very ugly. I love you guys and hope to see more of you guys on the show!

Alex, You guys are awesome! The show would not be the same without you! Though Simon could of kept his cool in check when the limo driver missed the turn, for your birthday. You were cool, calm and collective through it all! Bravo! Your boys are sweet, and boys will be boys. Their having fun in front of the cameras.

I love that you and Simon live in Brooklyn! Brooklyn can be a great place! It's large, diverse, a little slower paced than Manhattan-- which is what i like.

I love, love, love your renovation. I love your style and you and your husbands relationship! Kudos to you!! Also, for those who have gotten it twisted. Brooklyn is in New York, and most people that live in Manhattan can't afford living there either. It's called living beyond their means. Go Team Alex!!!! Go Brooklyn

Alex,
Love you, love your husband, love how you love your children! The Feed Bag corset was amazing and you were the perfect woman to pull it off...few would have the confidence to do that.
Bravo to you & Simon for showing class in the face of such idiots like Ramona & her husband (she WAS flustered when Simon showed up to play tennis and I loved it!)
YOU ARE A CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY!!!!! :-)

I love you Alex! You are awesome, your boys are adorable, and your husband is the sweetest! I think that you are truly real, down to earth, and not afraid to be yourself! Loves it!

Alex,
Talk about having your 'stuff' together...you most certainly do. Always appreciate your honesty and caring nature. You do so shine! Good job.

Are you kidding, social climbers.

are you kidding.

Darling...
I dont knw how to tell you this...but...IM GAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Bunches of love
Simon

Alex, You need to take your own advice. You and Simon are the world's worst for talking about people behind their back. Own it or move on! Also poor Simon was probably overheating from too much alcohol if the trut were told.

Alex,

First of all, who cares if that moose costume was used on Saturday Night Live. Just another instance of you trying to brag about something. I really get sick of you and your husband trying to appear more impressive that you are. WHO CARES!!!!! Just be yourselves and stop trying to climb the social ladder. Newsflash...you and Simon do not have the money to be a part of New York's High Society. Jill has that kind of money. I saw an article where you recently were laid off and you said you and Simon could only afford those lavish shopping sprees twice a year. You also said getting laid off meant you would have to cut back on the nanny. I'm sorry that you were laid off. Instead of trying to impress the viewers of this show, maybe you should focus on keeping your family financially secure. Be happy that you have your health, each other, your boys,a roof over your head and food to eat.

Also, if Bethenny changed her mind about the logo that is her prerogative. I don't recall seeing that you signed a contract to design her logo. Just because she didn't choose your design doesn't mean she didn't like it at some point. Maybe she just didn't like it for this project.

I think your husband and Mario need to stay out of the spotlight a little more on the next season. It is supposed to be a houseWIVES tv show, not househusbands. All in all, you and your husband are very real and down to earth. I like you guys far more than those two clown Mario and Ramona!!

REALLY...CAN YOU DO ANYTHING WITHOUT YOUR HUSBAND?

RH of NYC is the best show on TV! Alex, you and Simon make a great team - I love you two! I hope everyone comes back next season.

I too love Silex, they are the only two with an ounce of intelligence or class on the entire show. I think the others are jealous of the fact that they are happily married with 2 beautiful children, especially Bethenny because they have everything she wants but can't seem to get because she is so dysfunctional

I love you and Simon. I hope the two of you come back again next season!

Hi Alex,
I enjoy your writing. I think that for the most part, with a few exceptions, it's likely the real you that we see on the screen. I can't say the same for your husband, but he's your husband, not mine, and you're happy with him. I love what you say about Brooklyn. I lived there during my grade-school years, and it was indeed a great place to be a child. My son spent a few years in a very cool part a Williamsburg, a great place for an artistic young adult. Good luck with the renovation of your house.

Alex, you and Simon have grown on me over the past two years, I think you both are so good together and at least don't come off as the social climbers you were portrayed to be.
I have one comment really. In a previous blog, you said that you were glad to help Bethenney out with her logo, that you were willing to produce something for her and then let her run with it. Is this a little sour grapes now that she didn't run with yours but someone elses? I think she honestly thought the logo was right on, but in the end, wanted something else. We all change our minds. Loved the Halloween costumes. So, what is next for you? Have you been able to find a job yet?

You are my favorite, from your dealing with being a working mother and wife to trying to help out friends and every where in between. I think you are the most real woman on the show! you are honest about wanting to have a better life and all want that they just are not as honest as you are! YOU afre the most honest woman on any of the housewives shows west or east coast! By the way since the economy has taken a bit out of the company you worked for what are your future plans? Will you start up your own art studio and let other starving artist in?

Hi Alex, Thanks for being so real. I hope you confront the two-faced Betheny at the reunion show. I had to laugh when I saw her sitting in the audience at Dancing with the Stars, you think it was her that was the Star. Everytime the camera showed her, she was looking directly at it. She loves herself way more than she should. She is stuck back in junior high school. She has a good life now and she needs to get over her past or get some serious counseling for herself. All of the attention has gone to her head, unlike YOU.

Alex,

I have to tell you that it is very nice to see you loving you and Simon are to each other. It is also nice to see that you guys live your own lives and don't get caught up between the drama from the other housewives. You are so well mannared and respectful of others, and that is what makes good people.
The other housewives could learn a lot from the both of you, like spending quality time with the children...

Let me start by saying that I am totaly hooked on the Housewives series BUT New York is my favorite. At first I didn't care for you and Simon because you seemed to be social climbers and I thought it out of line for Simon to attend the ladies' evening. BUT since then, I have so much respect for the both of you --Simon never "loses it", seldom becomes confrontational and was calm and a complete gentlemen when Romana went off. I know she doesn't care for him but let's put on our big girl panties now and behave accordingly. And you are always very calm and collected and I love that you and Simon spend so much time with your children. I also appeciate that you and Simon do not talk behind people's back. AND you are stunning, especially at the opera events. Unfortunately, I adore musicals but have never been able to acquire a taste for opera and one of my good gay friends sings in the Phoenix opera but did do several shows in New York. I applaud you both.

Alex,
I think you are great. I admire the love and friendship that you and your husband have for one another. That is so hard to find. Don't pay attention to what others say about you, especially the other housewives!

Alex, I think you and simon are so down to earth and very well mannered. You never seem to bash on the other housewives when they bash on you guys. Keep up the good work.

WHERE IS SIMON????????????????? I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR HIS BLOG EVERYDAY!! I MISS HIM... I'M CRAZY ABOUT HIS BLOG. I HOPE THIS FINDS HIM WELL AND SAFE....... I WILL KEEP ON CHECKING!!!!!!!

I am so jumping on the Alex and Simon bandwagon!!! I really think that you both are very normal, average, yet extravagant people and I think that is wonderful! YOu are raising your children to understand that you can have nice things and live in a nice place, but you dont have to live in "Manhattan" or have a HUGE house in the Hamptons to be liked or noticed! GO ALEX AND SIMON!!!!

Alex, I don't know how you stand to be on this show sometimes. I have not seen you acting two-faced like some of the others. I do think you should call them out for it and not allow them to talk about and down to you.

None of the negative comments ever gets posted on this blog - shows how fake Silex really is.

Why does all my comments get ignored?
I can tell you prbably get 99% ill comments and only 1% nice ones- which gets posted.

Only thing I said was that I think you and Simon are really FAKE!!!

well, at least Bethenny is being real to the viewers! You guys are so shallow and fake in everyday life.

You are soooooo fake!

I agree with most of the blogs here. I have started to really like seeing more of you and Simon. You both seem to be more sincere than the others and you don't mean mouth them even when they deserve it. Keep up the positive image.

Dear Alex,

You seem like a nice enough person. You are helpful and kind to those that you care about. That's nice. I do feel awfully sorry for you when your hubby suffers from severe mood swings. Maybe, he should get a mood stabilizer. There really is no excuse for his tantrums since he is long in the tooth.

The feed corset was really beautiful. However, it isn't a practical solution for most people due to the exorbitant price. Hence, t-shirts and caps work just fine to help the cause and do it more effectively.

You seem to be a one-woman band for the joys of Brooklyn. I suppose if you lived on Park Avenue, then that would be the best place to live, right?

Alex,

Why did you lie and introduce your husband as the "owner" of the hotel that he actually just manages?

I have to say I have always been on the fence about you and your husband, but Simon was SO endearing when y'all were carving pumpkins on the steps with your kids! He seemed like a kid at heart and I love the fact that he talked about his halloween-free childhood in Australia. You both seem like great parents...congrats on being the most normal couple on the show.

Alex: I'm confused. Why would you were that FEED top to the opera? The opera, to those of us you are poor, is a sign of wealth. Shouldn't you have spent the money it took to go to the opera to feed the poor, as was intended by the charity?

The reason people are so weirded out by your relationship is because it's rare and real. It's beautiful to watch!

Alex, I just love you and your family. Don't ever forget you and your husband are all CLASS more than I can say for some of the others. I think they are jealous of your youth and family. Stay strong. When the show is on I can't wait for your segment.

I don't understand why the housewives don't like Alex. I find her funny, intelligent and a true go getter. I like her alot.

The only ones I don't care for are Ramona and Kelly as they're so self evolved its sickening. Ramona talks about simon not having any depth and yet I don't think ramona has any depth. I think she's as two faced and shallow as they come. Kelly is just plain a child. She thinks the whole world revolves around her and the whole world is looking at her and honestly I had no clue she was even famous until this show. I just don't get why she has to cause so much drama then blame it on others. I'm starting to turn the channel when Kelly comes on as its just soo ingorant for my tastes. I think Kelly needs to grow up.

Alex,

I get inspiration watching you from the show. I went to school for graphic design and want to branch out and make a name for myself. Do you have any tips or advice?

you once said that you didn't want to live in the "burbs".....what do you call living in the Hamptons for the summer? Hahahahaha.

Love the show. Dont worry about Ramona's bizarre reaction to yourself and Simon...or is that all put on for the show?

I loved that the show had you and your children doing REAL Halloween activities. It made others see that you know its a kids holiday and you put them first, getting into all the muck of pumpkin guts and the fun of trick or treating. Well done!!

Your FEED outfit was fabulous!! You are a gorgeous woman who indeed can look good even in a burlap bag!!! Your hubbie is quite lucky!

Its funny how this season started out with you and Simon being the underdogs but as time went on, truly showed you as the class act and REAL people that can stand proudly.

First let me say I adore Simon and yours' relationship. Second ignore Romana for being jealous of you two. I love the friendly atmosphere you give. I would love to have a friend like you. Now, here comes some insight on what I saw on one episode. There was a dinner party at Jill's around Thanksgiving. Francois, and the other son was misbehaving. I couldn't believe you would allow them to act like that. I think you should at least stop them from yelling? Are you still writing a book on parenting? Just to point out discipline, an important part. Hope to see the new renovations of your home like on HGTV!

I didn't like very much you and your husband at the beginning of the show. I though that you were snob and focalized how well you were speaking French. Je suis francaise mais je parle l'Anglais et l' Espagnol.
But after the last season, I changed my mind. You and your husband are very nice. I love Brooklyn and it's the best place for children. Much better than Manhattan.

You are also a good photographer! Congratulations.

I concur with the whole attitude about Brooklyn. I live in Bay Ridge, not quite as hip as BoCoCa, but it is the most diversified borough in the city (and the most populated!!). Contrary to popular belief, you can't get everything in Manhattan, but if you can't find it there, it's definitely in Brooklyn!!!!!!! It's awesome that you plug Brooklyn so much. It lets the rest of the world know that NYC is NOT just Manhattan, but 4 other wonderful boroughs as well.
