How Bethenny Frankel Stayed Focused on Puerto Rico Disaster Relief After the Las Vegas Tragedy

The #RHONY businesswoman remained on task — because she had to.

The Real Housewives of New York City’s Bethenny Frankel has "gone rogue." Those are her own words to describe what happened after she registered the crises happening in Houston, Mexico, and Puerto Rico following natural disasters — and knew she had to personally get involved to help. So far, she's chartered seven planes, which she’s packed with aid including supplies from nonprofit partners like City Harvest, and brought on-the-ground relief efforts to the hardest-hit areas.

And yes, that means she's been on the ground herself — unloading trucks, scouring Costco, distributing aid to desperate people.

So what did Bethenny do when she heard about the tragedy that unfolded in Las Vegas when a shooter rained bullets into a crowd of innocent festival goers? She forced herself to compartmentalize, recognize where she could be of assistance to people in crisis — and put her head down to continue that urgent task.

"I was on my way to the airport in a haze when my driver told me about [the mass shooting in] Las Vegas," Bethenny told Jet Set by telephone from New York, having just returned from an aid mission she organized in Puerto Rico. "But we weren't seeing the images; we couldn't process it."
And that layer of distance from the horror of the victims' smartphone videos and witness interviews was likely helpful in her efforts to carry on.

"To be honest, we had so much going and we’re just [trying to remain focused on] doing one thing," she said. For Bethenny, that meant turning her attention back to “Underground PR 911," an active chat thread with her collaborators.

"You [later] see the images on CNN, and then you go back on the [Puerto Rico relief] chat and you see, 'We need a connector for an oxygen tank, and we have a woman who is having a baby…' And then you’re like, 'How can I stay [away from their needs]?' We’re just trying to do our part."
