Simon van Kempen

Deny Deny Deny

Simon talks Kelly's Playboy shoot, Jill's Saks party, and Alex's meltdown.

March 25, 2010

Wow it’s already week four - at this stage in the first season, it was already more than half way over but in this, the third season we are not even third of the way in.

After the quick third episode recap we catch up with Bethenny as Jason gets home from work to find her lounging in her own branded SG bathrobe, after the obligatory baby/baby/baby exchange B discovers one of the best things about living with someone. There’s always someone to vent at; and baby did she vent! She recaps the Jill Stuart fashion show run in with Jill and LuAnn and once that’s done Jason decides that now is the perfect time to resolve their separate living arrangements with a cryptic “but before we can do that a commitment will be made. “ It’s sort of a pre-proposal proposal with a property lease attached.

Pamella Roland makes her second RHONY appearance (Alex, Bethenny and I went in Season One) as LuAnn and Kelly arrive. Kelly needs a pointer on how she should introduce LuAnn and after a couple of suggestions we learn that Kelly’s definition for ‘Countess’ is ‘charitable’ and ‘lovely.’ I am sure Kelly has her very own copy of the ‘Dictionary of Iconic and Superlative Adjectives’ as it seems she uses at least one in every sentence. While LuAnn thanks her for the compliment she decides that yes, she should be called Countess as “it is her name.” LuAnn, it’s not your name. That would be LuAnn de Lesseps or originally LuAnn Nadeau but ‘Countess’ is just an honorary title, to be used in lieu of Miss, Ms or Mrs, that you received when you were the wife of a Count.

Bethenny arrives and LuAnn suddenly has full color in her face as clearly her blood pressure is increasing. Bethenny decides to give her a run for her money but at least as far as we saw, the dig that B accuses L of making seemed pretty innocuous to me. After a quick set of photos with Lisa Rinna (AKA Mrs Harry Hamlin) Bethenny decides another fashion show altercation is called for. After LuAnn states how she and Jill are ‘very good friends” Bethenny tells her the types of things Jill’s been saying about LuAnn for sometime. B goes on to call her a snake (LuAnn not Jill) and LuAnn for once actually holds her own. They sit down to watch the fashion show (although the seats behind them are still pretty deserted) and just after Kelly states how embarrassed she is to see them argue. LuAnn’s conscious gets the better of her and she states to Bethenny that she is not a skank. Now last I checked my dictionary a snake is a limbless reptile and a skank is a promiscuous female. However could LuAnn have gotten confused? Arguments done, we get a quick 15 second clip of Pamella’s clothes – I wonder if Ms Roland will consent to filming in future seasons.

I have got to say... the other housewives make your wife shine even more cos she's got a great personality. Really classy of her to stay out of all the craziness!!!

Response to Team Jill:)

Why are you on this blog reading if you are so bored?
I love Simon and Alex and they are more genuine and honest than your Jill. They are also gifted writers and I enjoy reading their blogs.

Go read Jill's blog and tell her how much you love her...she needs it.

Simon, you need your own show! I love you and your wife. Best couple of the whole Real Housewives franchise! Alex and you have a self deprecating humor that I love! No one should take themselves as seriously as the other housewives, ie: LuAnn and Jill. Please hang in there and please Bravo, keep them on the show!!

We love you and Alex! You guys are sane, fun and interesting. Love ya!

Simon, your reviews are a great read. i like your takes on events (and like reading bits and pieces of behind the scenes). i enjoy you & alex on the show. i'm also a fan of bethenny, i can't believe how far jill has gone this season. i'm really hoping she turns it around before the show wraps up. i used to like her, but her "mean girls" stint is pretty off putting. she continues to use bobby as an excuse, but from everything we've seen of bobby on the show, i'm pretty sure he would not endorse or condone 80% of her behavior thus far. anyway, keep writing :o)

I like reading your blog, but it's "cover all your bases" as in Baseball. Not "cover all your basis". Oops.

I have to admit that at first I was no fan of yours and Alex's. Can't say why... I suppose I was just swayed by creative editing and the other housewives' initial take on you two. But Alex has certainly grew on me and I really like her now. And after reading your blog, I have to say that you are an adroit, funny and well-spoken person. Bravo indeed.

Good blog Simon. You and Alex are the only relate-able characters left on this show. You're like the anchors. I can't stand anybody else for a host of reasons, many of which you spell out quite nicely in your blog. You and Alex can at least rest assured that you never embarrass yourselves. Everybody else should really really be embarrassed how bad they are coming off this season. I had recommended this show to a very good friend who should've loved this show. Well she will probably stop watching it because it is NOT INTERESTING to watch grown women act like such idiots.

i just love your alex, she is sensitive to the needs of others and also when she cried about someone commenting on her son negativly-well all i have to say is- she is refreshing. May God bless you both.

I would like to say that I find Alex and you to be very sophisticated yet down-to-earth. I loved what you did with your home and how you went about doing the renovations.

Most affluent couples would have just moved somewhere else and hired a team of people to do the job in a week (no matter the cost). I commend you both for staying there because you wanted to.

In my opinion, any of the NY Housewives (or anyone for that matter) should feel honored to have you both as friends!

Thank you to both of you for rising above the drama. This season seems to be exceedingly fueled by jealousy of some of the women. Quite honestly, it is nauseating to see the behavior and caddyness. Perhaps there will be a time when there will be true blue friendships found. Nevertheless, keep being who you are...as we are all unique and cool!

Simon,
I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE your blog, and I LOVE the play-by-play synopsis. Don't change a thing!

Your loyalty to and defense of your wife is refreshing and endearing.

Cheers!

Here is a practical tip for you guys to remember this fall for Halloween pumpkin carving which I have been using for years and LOVE LOVE LOVE:Instead of cutting the top; cut the hole out of the bottom of the pumpkin. You can use tealights or carve in a hole in the base for a votive type,or discard the bottom piece altogether. That way no more lids falling in. Way easier! Love the remodel.Love your family too.You two have class; the rest? not so much....peace and love!

Love your blog - it's a great (well written) synopsis. You and Alex are great (and your kids are perfectly normal, regardless of what Jill says). I like to think you two are more typical of New Yorkers than some of the others on that show. Was I the only one who noticed the startled look on Jill's mother's face when Jill bragged about her $6,000 LV suitcase to carry her shoes? I definitely think this show has gone to her head (and maybe her mind, judging by the way she's trying to grind Bethenny into the ground). So much for BFFs!

Hmmmm... Interesting comments about Kelly and her Playboy shoot, when Alex was in the hot seat for her nude photos you had a very different take on what should be discussed.

Those in glass houses...

Love you and Alex. As for your children - the other women don't understand what it is like to raise two very active little boys. They are entirely age appropriate. I learned that my boys could only be expected to sit still and be quiet for so long and brought coloring books and toys to expand the time. It's not fair to them to push them too far.I had to leave restaurants early when I saw they were reaching the end of their tether. And if there was an adult around who gave them the least amount of encouragement they would have crawled up their legs too. Then the adult tires of the game and can't undrstand why the child is so jazzed up! This too shall pass. We were always complemented on our boys behavior but I had learned to adjust to their limits which I promise you will improve with age. My boys are now in there twenties and are very successful, well behaved gentlemen.

Simon,
Writing to you because you do a synopsis of show-so this is a good place to include my remarks about the ladies.
First of all- love you and Alex-because like everyone else comments, you are a classy couple.
I have been free associating, since I read that you and Alex went to Bethany's wedding, and since I heard Bethany say on Andy's show that she is friendly with your wife- that- If Alex is friendly with Bethany, and Alex has very good judgement( which she does),than Bethany must be less responsible for the demise of her relationshipw with Jill. You could call it innocence by association. Also, it seems that the teams are dividing this way-the wives who made it on their own(Alex,Bethany,Ramona) and the wives who married into it.Until Kelly demonstrates what it is she does that makes her a workaholic-than she remains Mrs.Bensimon, the former wife of a famous photographer, and on the latter side of the division line.Lastly, Count Delesseps was married three times prior to LuAnne-that means several more countesses out there-sort of dilutes and already unimpressive title.

Simon,

How can you write internecine but know know the contextual difference between conscious and conscience? Please teach your beautiful sons this very important distinction, as it may be too late for you.

Love your detailed and witty blogs!

Simon,
You and Alex are probably my favorite because you are both (kind of) normal. I really love Alex. She is reasonable, nice and seems to get along with most everybody. Having said that, perhaps your blogs could be less of a show recap and more of an opinion. You literally recap the entire show. Completely useless as most of us reading will have watched. Thanks.

simon, i owe you a much deserved apology. and i sincerely hope both you & alex get around to reading this comment. approx. 2 weeks ago i addressed some very harsh comments on you & i think i even made some zingers to alex. i truly am sorry. i assume you're privvy to my email address & if you find the time i hope you can respond and forgive me. i made a series of rush to judgment like comments. after much re-thinking about episodes & the reunion show i sincerely see you both in an entirely new light. a quite favorable one. i so admired alex's composure during the reunion. i also admire that you & alex just enjoy each others companionship so much. like my husband & i you have such fun with everything. i think some times the other cast mates are a little envious of that fact. but you're young, your going places and doing things with your life. my husband loves to "enjoy " my wardrobe. alex is a very astute & classy lady. she has control. and can be playful & elegant at the same time.
again i sincerely apologize for not seeing what really interesting people you are. keep having fun !!!

I love you guys, at first I didn't understand you because of the editing of the camera, but now that I have viewed a few seasons, I believe you both are the most consistent, not turning on and off for the camera. I think your kids are normal like all other kids. If only we could rewind time to see how Jill and Luann's kids were at the same age. Keep the post coming.... It was a good read....

I love Simon's editorial review of the shows. Every person has their own perspective, but I find Simon's to be very observant and true to the situation. Yes Simon does through in his own opinions, as we all do, but they are quite honest. What I like best is that you absolutely cannot judge this book by the cover. Simon and Alex may seem to be a bit eccentric, but that is only the cover. They are both much more true and honest people than anyone on the show. Thank you for entertaining me. Good luck with the book.

Simon is a housewife? I think Simon and Gloria have no business on here, and I dismiss evrything both of you say. Let's keep to the cast. Obviously you are biased, and we hear more than enough of you both on the show,

Simon, you pretender ... check your dictionary for "conscience" in place of your use of "conscious" in reference to Lu Ann. People in glass houses .....

you are hilarious

simon,
i LOVE your take on the show. your wit... your grammar...
keep writing. and ignore the haters. i always come on here to read your blog first before anyone's! love it!!!

You really know how to go on...and on....and on... Great synopsis of the show's events. Boring. You and your wife are a real piece of work.

My husband & I love you all the way from Chicago!I love how you support and love and honor your wife and have her back @ all times - You two are the prime example of true love & all the other couples on the show are HATERZ- you must be doing something RIGHT if they have to talk about you as much as they have over the past few seasons. Keep up the good work, I pray you & your family stay strong & happy and that your devotion to each other only gets stronger.
Blessings & light to you & your family.

simon,
i love your wrap up! it's always spot on.

however, i take exception to ramona referring to the constant cat fighting, gossiping and bad behavior as "high school". as the mother of two girls, one of whom attends a prestigious girls high school, the other a co-ed middle school, i can assure you the lack of manners and contempt for one another is not something we have experienced at either of my daughters schools. sadly, i think this deplorable behavior exists mainly on camera in the real housewife vacum. todays girls are being raised with much more dignity and class.

hang in there!

Simon...Whew! If I missed an episode, I can read your blog for a minute by minute description of every scene, every emotion, every eye lash battered... Do you take notes when watching? You are astute and witty in much of your takes on the ladies. Keep it simple: let's hear more of your interesting thoughts and opinions and less "playwright" re-hash of every minute of the show(that's what the "missed an episode" computer replays are for).

first your wife is a doll

second it is going to be interesting when (jewish) mommy dearest and count chocula have their big blow out and you know it will happen

keep up the great work simon you are a class act

Simon

I think you are so fun and interesting to watch. Please, please don't stop writing the blogs. I look forward to them every week.

I love reading your blog. I'm happy that Alex confronted Jill. Jill needs to realize she wouldn't want anyone making negative comments about Ally.

Simon, I think that you and Alex are genuine. My thought is if you know how others are hy do you let their comments get to you. Everything comes round. I understand the comment about the kids but it doesn't help that the editing sometimes portrays your children not in their best light. However these are boys and they should be full of energy. If I were you I'd have a little more control in the editing before letting my kids back on tv

simon, Out of all of the people on your show i really have to tell you that i love you & Alex, Your both Honest, loving couple with 2 great children. I think some of the casmates should look into themselves and see what the viewing audience sees. If some one or thing were to speak about my children tht way I wouldn't givethem the time of day I mean after all who are the children here. the grown ups need to check them selves. Hope you & Alex never change Keep enjoying life and being happy. LOVE LOVE LOVe to you both and the boys

Uh Simon? We saw the show can you get to your point please????

Simon,
It's funny, the reason you and Alex are becoming so much more popular, is because people see your decency. I guess reality tv does not have to be about outrageous behavior-the other castmates, hopefully, will realize this next season-too late for the 2010 episodes.Actually, now that I think about what I just wrote-if your not decent,it's just going to come out anyway.

HILARIOUS... I love it

Simon,

I've found that you and Alex are my favorites of the season, mostly because of your ability to stay grounded and out of the catty, toxic drama. Your blog is witty and spot-on when it comes to evaluating the drama and personalities of the housewives. Good luck on the rest of the season!

I think your blog illustrates a witty sense of humor that is not captured on the tv series. However, try not to be so wordy. You wrote 4 pages where most of the women only write 2.

Simon,

You and Alex seem like the only normal ones on the show! I think your boys are delightful. I raised two little boys and can appreciate how much fun they can be. Your wife is truly a class act. How difficult it must be to stay above the fray on RHNY, but you manage nicely.

AL

Great blog once again, Simon! I too am so bored of people knocking your children and your parenting. You have great, energetic boys! You have to occasionally remind people that children do childish things! Looking forward to your next blog.

Simon,
I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your blogs. You are an excellent writer, and your assessments are balanced and spot on. Your warmth toward and your gentle support of your wife was
endearing.

I laughed aloud at the Perez comments. That had slipped past me when I watched the show, but seriously, they were starstruck over THAT guy? I don't blame you for skipping his "event."

Take care, and please keep blogging. I am loving your little family more and more.

I find your comments about Jill this year disheartening. I became a Jill fan because of one thing....Her always sticking up for you and Alex...ignoring what others thought. While some made you out to be outcast and buffoons, SHE was the one to embrace you both into the fold. Now that the phonies need others, they seem to have gotten you on their side. How soon we forget what evil things others have said. Remember how disgusted Ramona was with your children at the finale dinner....or how she refused to sit on the same stage with Alex because of nude photos? or how she berateed Alex for bringing you to a girl's night.Oh and yes....Go to Brooklyn for dinner? How gross
Watch your backs.

Simon I just want to tell you how much I love seeing you and Alex because it's so plain to see that you love each other and respect each other so much, and that you truly love your boys. Keep having a good life, and God bless your family

I do enjoy reading your blogs because they are very well written. But anyways, you and Alex have no one to blame but yourselves for the comments Jill or any of the housewives make about your children. From what is protrayed on the show, your children seem to be very undisciplined and disrespectful. Also Jill is not calling you guys out at all, it sounded as though she was just sharing an antedote about ur kids. If she offends you guys so much then why have your children around her. I mean people do have the right to not have people climb up them or ruin their meals and dont forget everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Simon - brilliant blog, as usual - your take on Luann thinking Bethenny said "skank" was hilarious - talk about a Fruedian slip! Keep up the great work on the blog - your writing is very insightful with just the right amount of wit and dead-on analysis.

Simon,

Your blog is far superior to all of the other blogs- on any Real Housewives show. Please continue blogging in the same manner!

You and Alex are fantastic! You are both intelligent and articulate. I am glad you two are on the show!

Considering the high moral stance you seem to take in this blog, you seem to really enjoy bashing the other women on the show. I am a little confused though, isn't this show "the real houseWIVES of new york." Seems the women aren't the only ones who want attention.

Simon, bless you!
