Once upon a time, Gretchen Rossi proposed to her love Slade Smiley in a way that seemed — to some — to be made for TV. (Peep the clip above for a refresher on that, replete with commentary from Andy Cohen and Tamra Judge!) That was back in 2013, but to this day, The Real Housewives of Orange County alumni remains together though not married. What's the reason for that?
According to Gretchen, who recently sat down with Jeff Lewis for his SiriusXM podcast, it all boiled down to bad timing. At least at first! Though she insists that her proposal was genuine, Gretchen told Jeff that the May 24 wedding date that she and Slade had selected at the time was quickly shot down.
"After we said that, [Slade's] mom calls and one of my best friends calls and are like, ‘Uh, that’s [Memorial] Day weekend and we are on vacation — we have a whole vacation plan,’ ” Gretchen said. “And we were like, ‘Oh s---.’ So that kind of went to the side way because of that."
Fast forward to 2014, and life got in the way when the pair appeared on Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars; still later, Slade landed a role on the History Channel's Texas Rising. In short, Gretchen said: "our schedules got so hectic."
And now, financial issues have come into play. Gretchen is openly trying to get pregnant via IVF, and shared: "All of our resources have really gone into that. Anyone who has ever done IVF knows how incredibly expensive it is, and we’ve been through three rounds. You can imagine how much that money is.”
So in short, the couple is still very much committed to each other — and less so to finding the right venue and fondant flavor. And they're not the only dynamic duo who has chosen not to take the plunge, by the way!
